Wonderful memories have been created here. Thank you for giving us a wonderful dose of steam in it's splendor. I relived my youth as I watched this video, and it brought back memories of mine and my Dad's steam days in South Africa. May they never die!
All I can say is that's a early 20th Century memory being reborn with steam trains doing local work with freight. Truely amazing footage and catches I hope they'll continue to keep making these runs through out the years to really makes us feel like steam will never die
I probably would have paid for a DVD of this! Thank you so much for sharing such great footage for those of us unable to make it to places like Strasburg! Absolutely FANTASTIC Adam!
Thank you for the compliments Eric. I'm glad you enjoyed it and I can guarantee you that if you go and witness this yourself, you will NOT be disappointed.
Another stellar video...and congrats on #300! One of the most well-known and popular railfanning TH-cam channels out there...here's to the next 300 videos and continued success!
Superb footage you got there, especially the climb past Cherry Hill and great to see steam still operating on regular traffic! Thanks for sharing it. Ken
Wow Adam, I finally watched this front-to-back, some parts many times. Great opening shots, thankfully in cool lighting that really set the mood. The shots at Cherry Hill and Long Curve were immaculate, in fact, I think you should repost those two clips as a QuickClip video because they deserve additional praise. Again, I know where I want to go now! I really did a bad job at waking up and driving down there to see this, and now I regret it. I don't think I could top this, great job.
I must admit my partiality to the whistle on ex-CNR 89 being from Canada and being old enough to vividly recall when these steamers were everyday experiences.
I hit the like button as soon as the shot opened up... Amazing view.. Love the steamer. Then pops descending just was like icing on the cake... Well done!
I honestly thought I'd never see what I only heard about from my parents and grandparents and saw in old pictures. But with the price of gas and oil, perhaps we might see a little more of this.Wishful thinking I know, but it would be awesome.
It's fantastic to see revenue freight trains pulled by steam locomotives. The people at Strasburg Railroad outta give themselves a roudy appause for reliving this part of a fantastic by-gone era.
A great vid, a lot different than the "runby" types. This vid is especially great for those of us old enough to remember when steam actually worked day by day freight moves. The run at 21:28 where the whistle can barely be heard above the stack talk reminds me of one of my favorite railfan experiences years ago.on the "Q" trips out of Chicago in the 60s with the 4-8-4 5632 that had excessivly loud exhaust. Again, thanks for your patience to spend a long day waiting for those right moments.
+THE GUY Yep, and as much as I love steam the diesels saved the railroads. The labor costs in keeping these beasts going would have put them out of business.
Good catches, nice to watch steam power in action ijn a rural setting, late night as the air gets cooler in Texas with a light freeze forecast (11-15-12)... :-)
Neat video! This summer I got to go into the cab and sit in the engineers seat of #90. You can do this on their Hostling Tour during the late spring and throughout the summer. Check online. I also looked into #89 and #475's cab and stood on #7312's tender.
What a thrill it would be to see steam power hauling container cars and modularized products such as prepared forest products, etc. I would love to see steam power survive on the railroads--but I'll hold my breath until I see it actually happening! Happy steaming to all.
+steamguy101 Also WTF--I never thought I would see a serious RR effort with steam power on the front-end--and a CABOOSE at the back! This is a great chance to love railroading, maybe the old and the new. Best to all.
Deven Devers - This has to be for show. The maintenance cost is so high for these steam engines, that there is no way they could make any money with this, not to mention so few cars.
+nightlightabcd The video clearly says revenue, if it was for show, then this video would say photo freight. I think Penn Rail Videos would know what to name his videos.
09trainman really! How much revenue do you think they got to take all day to gather up those cars, at one po0int they had seven cars, but most times they had one car or four. How much revenues, as opposed to the cost of running the engine, do you think they made?
nightlightabcd How should I know? I just know that the Strasburg Railroad uses those beautiful steam locomotives for revenue freight. But they don't do it all the time, they do it on Wednesday and Friday mornings between March-October. (They still do it, check the vidoes for this year)
The MILW 261 should be returning to service this spring; they're just finishing the final touches on her overhaul this winter. Same for the Pere Marquette 1225 if you're more to the east.
I couldn't wait until the end of the video to say this is the best steam loco video I've ever seen! Superb! I love solid fuel steam engines! Atomizers take away the magic for me! BTW does anyone know the price of coal/ton in the US? Did they make back the money for the coal? Very exciting prospect if it's self funding from the freight! Thumbs up and Favourited!!!
The Norfolk & Western 4-8-0 Baldwins, Class M2, implemented lessons learned from earlier designs as far back as Central Pacific #229, built at Sacramento, CA, USA, and later replicated to twenty copies by Cooke-Danforth on the East Coast. The M2's, all packing superheaters, piston valves and Walschaerts drive, were fantastic for short-haul duty, as the weight on drivers permitted better acceleration than the better-breathing 4-8-2's and 4-8-4's used for interstate duty. The Pennsylvania developed a class of 4-6-0's at Altoona for commuter trains for the same reason. Time 9:35 Here, the payload is a Union Pacific - Omaha Road (CMO) hopper. The Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha became UP property via the Chicago & Northwestern.
We like to choose quality shots over quantity shots if all possible, and if you think watching a steam locomotive getting fired up is boring, then I guess steam videos just aren't for you. It's kind of humbling to see a machine of this magnitude being serviced just like it was 100 years ago in the 21st century. Thanks anyway though.
a rareity today, but this must have been the modern railrode that used steam that they were talking about in the challenger video where it hauled 134 car stack train a few years ago.
Eastern Lancaster County, PA. The highway is US 30, in fact, 1-1/2 mi. east of PA 896. The Amtrak is the Keystone Service, meaning this is the former PRR Main Line to Harrisburg (E-W). Ask Amtrak.
If you go on thier facebook page they tell when the do steam freights on wensdays and fridays but its at like 6:30 so its pretty hard to get there if your an hour away from Strasburg just like i am
That is the way that it come from the N&W, so they may want to keep it that way, I'm not sure. Also, the Class M's had a 7-in (or thereabouts) hooter, whereas the Class A's and the Y's had 12 in hooters
the camera shutter bothered me, it kinda interrupted the best parts. Probably because those were the really good shots though. I get it, totally would do the same thing. No worries though, the visual quality of the video and the fact that they're steam freights made up for it. As for the slow beginning, I felt it was okay because of the sunrise and there was a haze from the engine that looked cool. If it was middle of the day and wasn't in hd I'd might complain, but this was fine.
0:18 click here to save your ears and time. Holy hell..... The intro........ I did enjoy the video though. Lots of great shots, wonderful work, aside from that intro.

It certainly is a great place to get a young railfan hooked on steam. Glad you enjoyed the video!
This is how railroading should be done. Great video
My favorite part is the scene of the 89 and 475 doubleheading in paradise Leaman place junction at like 5:30 at dawn
That caboose is such a nice touch!
Thank you for the compliments Eric. I'm glad you enjoyed it and I can guarantee you that if you go and witness this yourself, you will NOT be disappointed.
Amazing video!!
This is truley preserved steam railroading at its finest
I was totally absorbed! What a great video of your lovely old steam trains! Well done!
Another stellar video...and congrats on #300! One of the most well-known and popular railfanning TH-cam channels out there...here's to the next 300 videos and continued success!
You can tell #475 was working hard on that grade at Cherry Hill.
Superb footage you got there, especially the climb past Cherry Hill and great to see steam still operating on regular traffic! Thanks for sharing it. Ken

Strassburg was founded as a for profit shortline railroad. They have allways handled frieght, It is not a recent addition. Great video!
I must admit my partiality to the whistle on ex-CNR 89 being from Canada
and being old enough to vividly recall when these steamers were everyday
experiences.
I hit the like button as soon as the shot opened up... Amazing view.. Love the steamer. Then pops descending just was like icing on the cake... Well done!
Easily one if my personal favorites of your videos! Congrats on the 300th mark!
I honestly thought I'd never see what I only heard about from my parents and grandparents and saw in old pictures. But with the price of gas and oil, perhaps we might see a little more of this.Wishful thinking I know, but it would be awesome.
alot of american steam engines are powered by oil
Aye. Ah'd love tae see that happen again.
It's fantastic to see revenue freight trains pulled by steam locomotives. The people at Strasburg Railroad outta give themselves a roudy appause for reliving this part of a fantastic by-gone era.
The Strasburg Rail Road is a classic! The track conditions look to be first rate!
Thank you! We are very pleased with our footage as well.
Thank you! As far as the ads go, this is out how pay our expenses so that we can bring you the best we have to offer in every single video.

Good to see steam haul revenue freight, no matter what the length!
DxvdzsWaAsgjnjhjjjjjhhhhj9jbhb
Both are wonderful engines indeed, and we hope to see them when they come out again for service!
Fabulous video, i was there a few years ago. Love that 4-8-0 locomotive, remeber that the PRR Railroad Museum is across the street.
think of all the jobs these beasts created
+THE GUY Yep, and as much as I love steam the diesels saved the railroads. The labor costs in keeping these beasts going would have put them out of business.
we could use it about now
THE GUY ppp
I visited there a number of times over 30 years ago and they are still in operation.
You seem to appreciate the essence of steam railroad unlike Mr. Norfolk7130. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Good catches, nice to watch steam power in action ijn a rural setting, late night as the air gets cooler in Texas with a light freeze forecast (11-15-12)... :-)
Thank you, and yes the museum across the street is in fact still there.
Great stuff Adam! Its funny how this is such a normal practice for Starsburg
If you dont mind, the Williams grove steam rail road will be running soon! If you can then please come out to film!! we would really love the support
Wow thats the best steam loco video made... thnks for sharig it mate...
If you listen closely you can hear that high pitched buzz sound. That's the steam power electric generator.
Neat video! This summer I got to go into the cab and sit in the engineers seat of #90. You can do this on their Hostling Tour during the late spring and throughout the summer. Check online. I also looked into #89 and #475's cab and stood on #7312's tender.

Nice! I really want to go in the cab of steam engine! I have been in a Dieseil and San Fransisco Trolly though!
An amazing video. Thanks for posting it!

Really great videos,thanx
fantastic video. really like the steam and the scenery was wonderfull. No Grafitti!
We're glad you enjoyed the video! We also would like to come visit the midwest and see the likes of Soo 1003 in action. Someday!
incredible video
Thank you! We are very excited ourselves!
got to get out there in the summer to see this
terrence Malick would be proud of the opening shot of this video
Sounds wonderful thanks!
Great to see the steam engine's hauling Freight again!

- I think it's a great idea and I hope they make enough to pay their expenses. That would be great!
Nice video! I understand the bids with one ad, but I don't like having 5.
Wow...this is amazing! Great Job!
The MILW 261 should be returning to service this spring; they're just finishing the final touches on her overhaul this winter. Same for the Pere Marquette 1225 if you're more to the east.
EXCELLENT VIDEO i am glad to see that tours railroad is hulling freight that was a Amazing to see O.O wow !!!!!!!

Thumbs up and Favourited!!!
The price of the coal was gained back from both passenger and freight transport.
James Griffin That's awesome to hear!
I agree. Oil takes away some of the magic.
Steam is beautiful.

Valve gear is Baker-Pillod
i would deffinately live in a town like this
There she is! My boy 475!
Thank you, we're glad you did!
Glad you liked it Kevin!

Thats a hell of a description too.
Thank you, and we hope they do too! It's a timeless scene!
Thank you very much!
Muy bueno de mostrar nuestro patrimonio del no tan pasado bien bien
It is quite the sight!
Thank you so much!
a rareity today, but this must have been the modern railrode that used steam that they were talking about in the challenger video where it hauled 134 car stack train a few years ago.
That was Union Pacific that did that...
like that 2-4-0 at the beginning
4-8-0*
Geweldige Video i love these Steamers
Great video!
Thank you!
They have however recently revived the business that was dropped off for many years. Thanks for the compliments however.
move out of the way diesels because STEAM IS COMING BACK BABY!
Amen to that
Thank you! We hope you'll check out some of our videos from the past and look forward to upcoming footage!
Very nice video.

Will Strasburg be operating the steam engines in revenue freight service this summer too? If so I am going to have to make a trip out there!
Sounds are amazing!!!
Thank you! We list what equipment we use on our TH-cam's home page.
If you go on thier facebook page they tell when the do steam freights on wensdays and fridays but its at like 6:30 so its pretty hard to get there if your an hour away from Strasburg just like i am
9:45 Hey 475 look how fast I can go!
9:49 Piss off....turd!
hahaha
I really wish they'd switch out 475's hooter. It sounds like someone ran over a moose. 7312 has the prettiest whistle of the Strasburg roster.
And that's why I love hooters. They're not pretty. They're "GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY WAY!"
u
I prefer the hooter in this case. It sounds like the N&W's Class A, Y Class, and the C&O's H-8 Allegheny.
MarsLight Productions And then comes the squeak
That is the way that it come from the N&W, so they may want to keep it that way, I'm not sure. Also, the Class M's had a 7-in (or thereabouts) hooter, whereas the Class A's and the Y's had 12 in hooters

Speak for yourself. I loved the whole thing. :-)
24:25 she spins the wheels a few times, whooops!
Awesome video! But how do you find out about these charters.
The engineers don't wave from the trains anymore, not like they did back in 1954 only for cellphones
Awesome video!! Just wondering what kind of video editing software you use? I would appreciate any advice or suggestions thank you!!!
All of us in the midwest are suffering steam withdrawl.
lovely footage.... but WAY too many advertisements.......
0:18 click here to save your ears and time. Holy hell..... The intro........ I did enjoy the video though. Lots of great shots, wonderful work, aside from that intro.
Only in Strasburg you see double heading steam revenue freight.
Great shot at 31:25
Will the strasburg RR ever do something like this again? If so I need to go back out east ASAFP!
I believe they are trying to make it a regular occurrence.
The first steam locomotive operation to run main line freight, WIN!!!!!!!
I'm sure they will. It's a big hit with railfans!
Thank you for watching!
who is going to this years railfan weekend in cass west virginia?
