  • Yamaha Tenere 700 is one of the most popular new adventure bikes out there. It features the legendary Tenere name and comes with a simple, rough bike, formula: less money, less electronics, stick to the basics. Here's our love and hate episode about the Yamaha Tenere 700.

      Well yes there is one in my garage . The bad news is that I have not had chance to ride it since June last year . Got busy after the summer trip to Lake Tahoe and a few months later my 22 year relationship ended . Long story but we are still friends and hopefully things will get better , I have known her since we were 9 . She and her sister inherited the house we had been living in and her sister and I are oil and water most times . Silver lining is that my dad is 84 and really can't keep up the house like he used to as he is doing so much for my mom and aunt who are living in an assisted living facility . He does the books for my business etc and I feed him and my dog .
      For the first few months my head wasn't right for riding and this winter has been insane with all the rain here in Northern California . Probably will take it out in a week or so . Have to start easy and get to know it again .
      I had a blast up at Lake Tahoe last summer and with the Motoz Tractionator ADV tires I really got confident on some sketchy spots . Along with those tires I put in a lithium battery Tourtech crash bars Tusk pannier rack Large replacement Tourtech windscreen along with a crap ton of moto camping gear . Still need Barkbusters a good GPS like the Garmin 750i Montana maybe the center stand and a couple other things but I can't put much money into that bike right now until funds recuperate . So that's what's up in my world , take care now .

    I really like the tenere, because it looks amazing and it's pretty simple. There are some negative points, but all motorcycles have those.
    I really like this series! These are tough times, and every time I see one of your videos it puts a smile on my face! I am watching all your adventure travel videos right now.
    When all this is over, I will buy my first adventure bike. You have inspired me, Christian! Thank you and stay healthy!

    I drove this bike "2019" for a 1500km T.E.T. (Trans Europian Trail) trip from the middle of Germany through the Swis mountains down to Italy and back and I learned so much about this bike. It handled the autobahn an some stretches well at 120km. The sock suspension setting was way soft on my 220lb frame. I tightened the front suspension 5 turns and the aft 2 turns. Was then working fine for 80% of the situations I put it in. The throttle DOES have an initial jurk when coming off the throttle stop. I hear there is some mapping fixes for this. Lastly the stock tires are good for asphalt and hard pack. Send is less then ok, but mud and wet grass is crazy bad... change them to something more aggressive if your ok with lossing ride quality at high speed on the road. Other than that its a great bike at the price!

      @@damytzeus dude I have a 701 I know what your saying but ..the 690/701 is dual sport ...we modify them to be more like an adventure but they are not the same class of bike for sure. A 790 has a zero chance of going where a 690 can go , a 690 has zero chance of being as smooth and comfortable as a 790 on the road.

    • @ssmith954
      @ssmith954 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@damytzeus I've ridden both and own a 690. The 690 is far quicker and more responsive, can be thrown around much more, and is far better off road. Both are limited by small fuel tanks. The Tenere is FAR more comfortable over distances. Tenere engine is smoother and entire ride is more refined. 690 is more expensive for aftermarket parts. For a RTW bike I'd go for the Yamaha. For tougher but shorter trips the 690 is hard to beat. Both are perfect bikes, and both are imperfect bikes. Both are full of compromises.
      For examples I sometimes wish I had a 500 EXC or WR450F instead of my 690. I think I'd rather go for a KTM 790 over the Tenere too, even iff I'd have more confidence in the reliability of the Yamaha.

    I disagree, the throttle is a peach. The suspension isn’t bad at all, comes too soft but can be adjusted. I think stock, it’s a brilliant bike that still has scope to be made marginally better with a few upgrades.

    This is the next KLR650 at a next level. I’ve been watching a lot of videos on the T7 and all but few reviews always present a negative to this bike. Usually about the suspension. But let’s be honest, unless you are a hard core enduro rider you are not going to notice the suspension that much. Hell my old KLR650 had stock suspension and I could easily do logging roads/stream crossings/small jumps and some single track riding. This T7 is going to be used off road like a KLR650 or a DR650 and so I can’t see the suspension being that much of a problem. Of course, if you are a heavy rider then a change in suspension might help. This bike has more capability than most riders. Check out FortNines review and also Pol Tarrés doing some amazing stunts on the T7.

    I have a T7 from the first batch since July 19, I have done absolutely everything with it even hard trail or soft enduro and Cristian is right about the suspension and jerky Off-on throttle.
    The suspension is harsh on rocks and deflects a lot, not plush on the street either. On jumps or coming down from wheelies it bottoms out if you not close the compression. it's not a lack of quality but internal valving setup.
    The jerkyness can be mildly corrected by reducing throttle free slack but not Completely solved.
    The engine is marvelous and also the handling.

      you're right, getting proper spring for your weight and revalving suspension should fix all those issues. Anyway virtually every adv bike on the market needs that, so its not like its T7-specific issue ;

    It's nice to see really honest reviews like this pointing out pro's an con's :) Would love to see a review / discussion on the Royal Enfield Himalayan. I'm building a ww2 Norton Raf 16H at the moment very similar to a Himmy as I like my more simple bikes after running a 1967 Norton 650SS last year which was a revelation compared to my old BMW GSA LC 1200 which had an agricultural gearbox an had which spent 7 months in the workshop and worked through a few engines final drives and other components. Has to be said the power delivery on the 650ss and the gearbox are both silky smooth :) surprising for such an old bike that's been very reliable. It's a shame the Yam's got a snatchy throttle when brands of the yesteryear had those aspects right.
    Having said that I don't think any bike ever is perfect :) Stay safe an keep making this ace videos.

The new KTM 790's are my first choice (but I haven't ridden any new ones yet). Now I see the new Triumph 900's with the new firing order and lighter weight making them more off-road capable and a lot more comparable to the KTM 790's. My 3rd runner up looks like the Base model African Twin. Could you rate the new Tiger 900 against the KTM 790 and the base African Twin.

Personally I have the Teneré 700 and loved it a bit more than the 790 but that is just taste. Don't let a reviewer tell you which is best for you, only you can do that for yourself.

    I like that this "love an hate" is somehow fair! If you say that this bike is afforable (not cheap!) than you always have to say what is not coming with as technical features or suspension quality. Is fine if you don't need but therefore the price it not a point to compare. If you come from the other side that you want your bike to offer electronic features like traction or speed control, this bike isn't an option at all!
    So I like this fair statements of this video! Thanks!

    Suggestion/request for future review. Given that T7 moves away from computer assisted controls, would love to hear how rider(s) are adapting. For those of us who have gotten "lazy" with traction control, ride modes, ABS, dual brake assist, etc. what do we have to be prepared for when getting on a T7. I realize dirt bikers are gonna have their own "told you so" opportunities here but it would be an interesting opportunity to push bikes to their limit & see how they perform differently. And from a safety perspective, it could be very valuable for some who have come to rely on technology to keep the rubber side down.

    • @silverdale3207
      @silverdale3207 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You don't have to adapt, you just don't need it on this bike because it is so smooth. Plus there is something wrong with a rider if they think they can just pin it open coming out of a corner and let the computer do the rest. I'd advise anyone to get out on some loose gravel or grass and learn the break away point of any bike, it's a skill every rider should have . It's automatic to those of us coming off dirtbikes and a valuable skill to have .

      I would buy it, immediately.except if they fuck it up like they did with this bike. It needs ofcourse great suspension for off-road, a tank good enough for atleast 400km range, a rack for a topbox, and a passenger seat. :)
      The versys 300 is very close, except for the excessive fairing and street oriented suspension.
      In South America we got a Tenere 250. Discontinued already btw. It lacked a more powerful engine but the reliability is fantastic and the range is also great on that one too, and it also had enough seat to fit a pillion. Tenere 400 like that one insta buy for me :)

    If your really pushing it on road the engine can be thirsty. I also have a 1290 superduke & they're both sitting in the garage waiting for this crisis to be over......but when?

    I consider the lack of electronics as a big plus. It's the same like with cars. The more electronics is in, the less reliable the cars are. And you really want to enjoy riding your bike. Electronic used to take control over it completely and when something bad happens with the electronics, you're stuck. Or worse in danger. People used to ride with electronics systems often cannot even break properly. Some are only using front break because the braking asistant automatically uses the rear break as well. Another plus is you can service this bike on your own and the service won't be very expensive anyway.

    The headlights are awesome…..I have people flash me all the time at night because they think my brights are on. These are projector LEDs…..this is one place they didn’t cut costs. I personally think auxiliary lights would be a huge waste of money? The only thing I don’t like is the seat, it’s uncomfortable for long rides.

    its less than 10k ..BUT.. no centre stand, optional higher seat (for people who don't fall over at traffic lights if they're not flat footed) is 300 EUR extra, no cruise control (i'd use it every time i enter the motorway/autobahn) plus a proper bash plate and some basic crash protection, plus 'fix' for the wobbly dash. (CAMÉL ADV makes a nice one).. last not least: suspension. Most testers didnt have a problem with it, but lets see how that changes over the years - I guess it is okay but nowhere near of what you get if you go for a 690/701

Get the suspension set up for you (maybe upgrade it in a few years when it’s a bit tired), add a few mods and I’m sure you’d be very happy.

    I'm actually okay with the cost cutting measures Yamaha used. For example, the suspension. Even if it will cost me a grand to upgrade the Tenere's suspension, it would still be less than the price increase Yamaha would have to make to sell the bike with better suspension in the first place so that is something I will NOT complain about.

    I think Yamaha have produced a fine bike in the Tenere 700 (I'm a big Yamaha fan). However, for me I can't go past the value and performance of the KLR650. It's simple, reliable and oh so capable. I got mine for A$3000. It has taken me to some very inhospitable parts of Australia and back again many times. I'm not worried by dropping it, which I do most trips. Opinions vary, but for me while I'd like the Yamaha in my garage I'll stick with the KLR and spend more money on the actual adventures.
