Another great reveiw TMF, I bought the very same bike as your demo a few weeks ago..Love it ,have had BMW's for the past 20 years and sold my 1200GSA a few months back..its a capable bike and keeps up with bigger bikes just fine...
Currently going through all the mid-weight adventure bikes and looking for just the right one. An old high school pal and I may be teaming up to each purchase one and take on some world travel, on paved and unpaved roads. I had a 2008 660 Tenere as my first big bike. Took it down to Morocco days after getting it and it didn't skip a beat. Taught me a thing or two about riding as well!
Test rode one last Saturday and placed my order for the competition white👍🏻

Only rode it on the road but it felt very manoeuvrable....and Im only 5’8”.....
Most adventure bike tend to feel intimidating by their sheer size but this one felt great.....like riding an enduro bike on the road.....No vibration at all and wind protection felt great aswell...fantastic looking machine in the red and white and Yamaha reliability......I could go on all day....just get one bought👍🏻

It's got a key so that's a big thumbs up in the reliability stakes for me. Simple electronics, not a lot to dislike.
The "keyless" BS was really stupid trend started by BMW. I would never trust a bike with that + you still need a key to open the f.ing panniers and you need to place your garage remote somewhere. Basically pointless, posh invention.

Another great bike review. I was at my Yamaha dealer (Portland, Oregon) yesterday and asked when they expect to see the Tenere 700. He had been told May or June next year. As always stay safe.
Nicely done TMF. I like the simplicity, no rider modes etc, for me that's all a needless faff. Yamaha need to step up on some things though, braided brake lines and better quality, better feeling plastics. The lugging about test you do would be interesting with laden panniers, is that something you could consider for the future? Thanks again, top notch.

What a stunning little bike, reckon I'd like one of these! Great review TMF as always. I'd be very surprised in Yamaha don't sell shed loads of these.
The only thing, its nog little at all. 'bigger' bikes are easer to touch ground.
Definitely a bike to consider. I however can’t wait till April or May 2020. Went out and found a leftover 2017 Africa Twin. Saved some money, and definitely comfortable two up. Maybe not as easy to ride off-road as the T700 but it will be a 70/30 bike for me. Great review TMF, as we have come to expect.

I think that this is going to be a massive seller. With the adventure pack you have a mid size option to the traditional big boys adventure bikes. It will be interesting to see whether Honda fight back by making a more focussed NC750X. The current model is still really more of a roadbike. I also like the fact that Yamaha have kept this relatively simple, and also used the well tried CP2 motor.

You seem to be using a bit of different riding kit ATM, need some reviews.
Great review. I think we can see the writing on the wall for the Suzuki DR650 and why Kawasaki removed the KLR650 from the segment. For 3000 nicker less than a 790 adventure, this bike is incredible value. Think of the farkling you could do to this bike: seat, GPS, bags, metal handguards, perhaps tuned suspension for off road, and you're still lighter than the KTM. I hope this bike spawns more competition in the 500-700cc ADV bike segment. I am definitely thinking of moving down from a 1000cc adv bike to this sector. Tenere 450 anyone?

The *new* 2020 Yamaha T700 is problematical because it is brand new. We do not know it's
issues yet. The 1st & 2nd year of production will tell us all. Again, it seems like a good basic bike.

The Tenere 700 looks like a great adventure style bike for somebody not wanting to spend too much,only or who does not want to deal with 560lb adventure bike on a off-road ride.
Loving mine, had it for 2 and a bit months and thrown everything at it from touring to some pretty gnarly off road, ticks every box. They fly once you get them up to 6.5k rpm, but the power is nice and smooth off road. The simplicity is a breath of fresh air, oh and the offer of a guided tour round Thetford Forest on mine still stands TMF if you fancy it sometime.

Know these roads very well and ride various adventure bikes due to need to sit upright following spinal injury a few years ago. The Tenere looks exactly what I need; slightly lustful after the NEC but your opinion confirms it - how refreshing to get back to basics and just be able to ride without scrolling through the techy stuff. At 15:00 mins I love it when you talked about the 'wet and treacherous grass' (I'd be the same). But then I imagined how Ryan F9 would have planted a foot, spun it 180 and ridden off at speed. Leaving whoever owns the grass cursing away 😂
Owned the last 660 Tenere - took me all around Europe. 44,000 trouble-free miles (2 × bulbs and 3 x cush-drive rubbers). When I get bored of my current street bike, this is the next one to go into garage. No-nonsence back to basics, take you anywhere machine. With 2 cylinders it will be that much more comfy and flexible to ride. Nice review - thanks.
What was the seat like long distance?
@@stu82 For me, the 660 seat was terrible. I had to use an AirHawk seat cushion - couldn't have done long distance without it.

I've had me tenere 700 almost two months now and only watching your vid mentioning the select button the switchgrip did I know it was there 😂😂
Great video, thanks. This is my 15th bike and I'm quite sure I wont be changing it for at least 5-10 years, making this the bike I ever owned for the longest. It does move upto around 230kg's with all the accesories. But having 7 different suspension adjusters, you can customise it to your weight and ride style. It's also more fun than any other similar bike I've ridden. Just to make sure I don't sell it on a whim, I spent 1/6th of what I paid for the bike on accesories from soft bags, to heated grips, to touring screens, to handlebar raisers, to custom made comfort seat (keeping the original cover), to tire pressure sensors, to foldable mirrors, etc. I had already bought the Rally version so it came with the agropovich which is much better than expected, one piece rally seat, heavy duty skid plate, etc. I already shedded off 2 kgs from the weight with the agropovich, and soon will shed another 2kg's off by switching to a lithium battery just to compensate for some of the 25kg's I had to add to the bike via accessories. There seem to be only 2 bikes I'd get if I sell this one, and they are 1) Another newer Tenere, or the new Tenere World Raid with a TFT screen, steering dampener, double gas hatch, lowered center of gravity in general, and many other crazy attributes which might be well worth switching. Be sure to give that one a go when you have the chance.

Like the reviews thanks, but all these mid range adventure bikes get good reviews. Would be interesting to get one that picks out the differences between them in terms of strengths V weaknesses as that helps to prioritise for those who are looking to choose one. For me things like tubeless tyres or long distance comfort make quite a difference to which of the likely bikes I would choose. I’d it possible to do a vid looking at the differences between these bikes? Thanks
I think I'd go for one of these over the KTM 790 -- not as much power but there's a lot to be said for simplicity of features and tech in this kind of bike, not to mention the better price point. I'm a KTM owner (690 Enduro), but would be happy to shift over to the Yamaha. It's not the kind of bike I would worry about getting a few knocks.

My Tenere 700 is one from the first batch. Got it last August. Got 2300 km on it before winter. I love it. Soon it's time to take it out again. Can't wait. Have bought a higher windscreen during the winter. The windbuffeting in highwayspeeds was kind of annoying. I hope that the new windscreen will help with that.
My 250L was stolen back in October. I’ve always leaned towards the dual sport more than any other bike however I have a thing for adv bikes as well. I think this bike falls right in the middle. I don’t even think I could call it a full adv bike. It’s more like a super dual. As much as I loved my L I think the T7 is it’s perfect replacement considering my bias towards off roading and still wanting to commute to work. Thank you for your review I was looking forward to it

Standard spec does not have an adjustable screen but RallyRaid, Givi and other will do you a taller screen for £75 - £85.
Yep.. 700 to 800cc twins are the sweet spot! Nobody needs anything bigger, except for bragging rights. Did 3500 miles round Europe on my F800R, two up, and it was perfect... cruising at the speed limit, and returning 60mpg!

No vibes at all and comfy for touring (except potentially that thin seat)....

You are killing me i just got over my 35 year obsession with adventure bikes got me a tourer and a sports tourer and now you're making me all dual purposey feeling again..its even got no gadgets bar the obligatory abs which you can switch off !!! ahhhhhhh....stop it now .....well i know what i'll be buying in ten years time ..

Great review as always. Has a lot of things going for it and nice to see companies making simple bikes that will age much better while being more reliable. Only disappointment is that it looks cheap. The prototype looked amazing, unfortunately the production version is underwhelming to say the least. Also dual sport bikes should all have tubeless wheels in 2019.
if you are happy changing a flat on a tubeless tyre in the middle of nowhere go for one....me - i dont have the ability to do that, but I can change a flat in a tubed tyre( new tube or a patch ) and use a handpump to blow it up - i dont carry a compressor big enough to seat a tubeless tyre...
@@graantmnz co2 cartriges and a plug, basically the space of 2 wallets (doesn’t need more space than what you need to remove wheels and replace or patch tube(s). With tubless, 5 minutes and your up and running ;). If its 35c + mosquitos, I choose tubeless every single time ;) To repair a tube in ghe middle of nowhere, you’re looking at an hour, unless youve done it hundreds of times. You typically don’t need to seat the tire, because tubless wheels have a safety bead to keep tire in place in case of a puncture. Also someone could even carry a tube in case tire was dammaged beyond repair, just to make it to the next shop.

Ive been looking at the 700 Tenere for some time. Seeking a machine that can handle my need for acceptable road performance, good trail ability and overall simplicity at a reasonable price. With all that in mind, I have bought a Royal Enfield Himalayan. Job done .
Interested as to how they justify the premium over a road going MT07, yes uprated suspension, but what else? I do like it but think the price is high compared to others in the Yammie range, although cheap in the ADV sector. Your thoughts please @themissendenflyer
It's not just the suspension, its the frame as well. New bike with years of development also adds to cost.
Good review as ever TMF, the Tenere 700 is as you said a great all round bike. I hate the term commuter bike, but actually it's a compliment about useability and reliability. And the MT07 engine is one of the most reliable trouble free engines out there. A DNA filter, exhaust and a sprinkling of accessories of your choice and and it will be a brilliant bike!! Cheers Steve
Only 2 Yamaha,s I have owned have been a RD 250 LC and a IT 490 K, both 2 strokes, the 250 was an absolute hoot back in the day and the 490 was an absolute beast of a bike, big bore 2 banger with no high tech at all.
Now this 700 turns up and really got me interested, thinking it would be a good replacement for my DR 650, a simple mega reliable bike, but first I have to wear out my DR, which may take a few more years, only 250,000 K's on the clock so plenty life in the old girl yet.
Interesting review Mr Flyer, good to get an opinion from, no offence, a road bike rider, but you do live in blighty and it is not really well known as a great place to ride a dual sport bike, unlike say Australia or Mongolia or the Stans, wide open expanses of nothing but a dirt road and rough roads at that, not always places you want to take a 250 Kg bike, especially in the wet.

Thanks for posting. The brake lines do not seem to be steel braided. Could it explain the softer front brakes? Curious on how it deals with gravel/dirt roads. Could be a "I don't care if I drop it" kind of bike for an adventure trip.
Watching you “trying” to manage the cobble paving and U turn on the grass looked just like my efforts not so long ago. Then I did the BMW ORS level 2 course, overnight mastered the confidence of such surfaces and even find riding over newly laid gravel surfaces enjoyable challenge now. Give it a go, maybe even do a video on benefits of learning basic off-road skills.
I've done plenty of off-road riding Mark (I know, incredible isn't it) - it's not for me and I have no inclination to do the off-road skills course with my arthritic shoulders! I'll stick to poodling along country lanes....

Tracer great if you have no intention of going off-road - if you do, then this is the bike to get....
Thanks. I have the same problem with the brakes on the Transalp. You do get used to them after a while, but with me other bikes swopping to and throw, I never really do and just find them downright horrible as a result. Mind you that doesn’t say much seeing that my other bikes are large GS’ with phenomenal speed scrubbing abilities. I do however enjoy riding that midsized adventure bike as much as anyone will the Tenere to the point of wondering why I have more than one bike after a few KMs acclimatising. That’s fortunately only a question until I ride one of the others. Each bike is so unique and so special and for that reason I kick myself for ever have sold a bike, I miss them terribly. So, with a pint of drought in the hand a cheers to all the girls, er, bikes I’ve loved before... I miss you all.

Remember those breaks are a compromise, too. Off road you don't want to have too much initial bite. Pull a bit harder and they are good.
Anybody here irritated by the clutch cover pushing the right foot out a bit? Only sitting down, that is. Standing is fine.

TMF, great review & great bike! How is the stock seat comfort on longer rides like commuting etc? Was that a Spit Fire aircraft static display at 7:00 on the left? That aircraft helped save England in WW2.

Nice review as usual mate! If u could only pick one bike to run around town, do errands & go on weekends long rides what would it be? This bike, vstrom650, tracer 900GT, triumph tiger?
Tough one - not the VStrom....
Bought mine April 2021, needed a few mods to make it a great bike; uprated the soft suspension (K-Tech front fork springs and Rally Raid rear spring), fitted 23 litre Acerbis fuel tank, replaced ABS sensor discs to correct wildly inaccurate speedo (these are now readily available) improved road presence with Denali D4 driving lights, centre stand for ease of chain maintenance and increased gearing with 16 tooth front sprocket. It has enough character to produce grins on back roads. Only issue was discolouration of rear spokes which were covered under warranty thanks to the helpful crew at Flitwick Yamaha. The bike regularly returns 60 mpg, annual servicing just over £100, annual insurance £120. It's the longest I have ever kept a road bike.

Good review, but from other reviews I think what sets this bike apart is it's off road ability. This is where the bike seems to shine, a proper dual purpose bike. Maybe an off road adventure on the Tenere in the future... 😉?
It’s closer to dual sport than adv I think. It’s why I call it a Super Dual 👍. It looks like the perfect machine!
Interesting review TMF, I suspect the Vstrom 650 is a better touring proposition though with comfier seat, adjustable screen and 20 litre tank. Oh, it’s £2k cheaper also.
For touring a better comp would be the Tracer 700. If you want to tour and also go off-road the Tenere 700 is in another league from the Vstrom.
Wouldn’t want to take the Tracer off road though 😀

Tried the V-Strom didn't get on with the riding/leg position. I wanted to like it, but it just didn't fit me.
@@Mohdock the v-strom 650 seemed like a 1000cc when i sat on it really huge bike. I was much happier on the 650 verseys
Lucky enough to test one against my 660 Tenere. Big step up as a road bike, with 6 gears and more power. The perfect solo travel bike, with a perfect balance of power and simplicity.
But for 2up she hates the small seat and 16 litres is way smaller than the traditional Tenere big tank. 23 on the 660.
But Yamaha have got it pretty much bang on with this bike. As you say the big bikes in the real world too big, heavy and complex.
Outside the pub this is a great machine.

Will definitely check it out. My favourite Yamaha Xt got old. "Looking" for a replacement. Am though driving my Funduro which I like much and have chris crossed Europe on it. (but requires quite bent knees and is not for anything offroad. ) so the new Tenere seems perfect. The BMW 1200 is for road use. Perfect for around Ireland...
