    I really think the categorization of off road bikes needs an overhaul.
    Street bikes have sport, sport tourer, super sport, cruisers, ect.
    With off road bike it's dirt, dual sport, adv.
    There are so many sub categories in there.
    Utility, trail, enduro, motocross, rally.

    • @StimmedPenguin
      @StimmedPenguin 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s the thing about bikes. It’s hard to find that sweet spot depending on what you’re interested in.
      Personally, a new niche I’d love created would be a two-stroke, 500 cc, two-cylinder, ADV that’s fuel injected.

    • @StimmedPenguin
      @StimmedPenguin 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vsucc Yeah I was looking at the 300 XC-W TPI for a street legal SuperMoto setup one day, but yeah, nothing like a two-cylinder anywhere to be found because 2 strokes are largely extinct.
      I just think you’d find the perfect power to weight ratio paired with a electronics control package that’ll keep your wheels spinning the right amount on dirt and upright on wet road selectable on demand if so desired as a package. I always love having budget options on models.
      Not to mention the lack of oil filter/valve maintenance with a larger ADV sized gas tank and luggage options.
      It’s a dream, unless a whole bunch of free time and money come my way then I’d modify a KTM frame myself and engineer something to work.

    • @mmaaddict78
      @mmaaddict78 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StimmedPenguin You'd probably have to build your own custom if you want a multi-cylinder two stroke. Engine probably wouldn't be that hard to source though. Plenty of sleds and marine engines that would fit the bill of liquid cooled.

  • @Ritalie
    @Ritalie 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The photo at 4:04. This is what ALL DUAL SPORT bikes should be. They should make the DR650, XR650L, XL650, DRZ-400, KLR-650, into low tech, low cost, parallel twins. They don't need fancy gizmos, or fancy suspension. They just need a high revving, counterbalanced, 70 HP parallel twin, with an overdrive 6th gear. Then you have a legitimate cross country touring machine, for cheap. The single cylinder bikes don't like to be revved super high, and they also don't like to be revved super low either, they only do good at medium RPM's. A parallel twin can be lugged at extremely low RPM's, and can also run at extremely high RPM's, without complaining. And then, you also get 75% more horsepower. With modern engine technology, single cylinder bikes aren't necessary for weight or size. Nobody wants 38 horsepower and a single that feels like it's going to throw a rod at 75mph. A KLR single is heavier than a ZX-6R with a 4 cylinder.

    You make a good argument for the dual sport. For me, I live in the city, have a car as my daily, and no trailer. So I need that bike that’ll get me out of the city for a good hour before I can get my tires sandy. I’m leaning more towards the Tenere. This is coming from someone that’s had the TW200, FZ07,and a Goldwing. As soon as I sold the dual sport I missed riding on the road, seeing a fun trail and going exploring. But that little T-Dub sucked on the hwy, so frickin sketch haha!

      I’ve got a TW and have been riding them for a couple years. Such a fun and nimble little bike. Just rode it down some really sketchy trails here in Colorado and it performed effortlessly, albeit absolutely gutless at the 9500-13,000’ levels. I want to go up to a tenere and get into the ADV scene but still be able to hit some slightly technical trails…you think this is a possibility at slightly above novice levels? I’m not afraid to drop my new bike, nor take chances and scuff em up. That’s just all part of the learning experience.

      @fonz-ys6xu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you've already been riding for a few months and getting the fundamental skills built up, then I'd say you're probably ready to move up. Just remember with the new bike to get comfortable on it first, practice on trails you're familiar with, and then start to push yourself out of your comfort zone a little bit more and a little bit more. Have fun, be safe. It sounds like the T700 is a bike that can handle being dropped and beat up a little bit :)

      DS tend to be singles that are smaller (250-650cc) and more capable on dirt- they look like dirtbikes with lights. ADV tend to be larger twins (700-1200cc), more expensive, with rider modes, electronics and more powerful for pavement, with some use for dirt roads and a bit of off-roading. The Tenere is interesting because it seems to split the difference nicely and thats what ADV is all about.

    Nice video I appreciate the history lesson, some I knew but did learn a few things. I have watched videos out of Australia about the virtues of the 660 Tenere. Riders of adventure bikes have a great choice depending on where your adventure lies. These days my adventures are on tarmac so I have a V-Strom 650 and love it for long road trips. My son has a 1090 Adventure R where 70% of his riding is off-pavement. In fact he riding the South California BDR as I type this reply. It is the bike he rides on long road trips with me. If he wants to ride single tracks then he uses one of his 2 KTM dirt bikes.

    Yeah, I agree with all that but, it comes down to what you can spend and how you treat the damn thing. My NC700X was cheap, gets to some nasty places, construction zones and is a great commuter. Lots of ground clearance, low end grunt and different tires. Plenty of scrapes and wounds on it but it's there to serve me and not the other way around.

      @@mmaaddict78 Guessing you are in the states. I'm in NZ. They're around $20K new here (NZ $) and have seen them as low as $16K second hand, low kms. Around $10,600-US. Rode the Triumph ScramblerXC last week - pretty disappointing - typically shit ride-by-wire throttle response and very weird ergonomics. Kind of a shame. The up-side is I don't have to find $22k to buy one now. T7, Duc, and Africa Twin still to check out.

    Not sure if I'd take the Yammy over the KTM 790 ADV, but then I'm just that sepeed demon sport touring guy that only wants to go fast with the occasional gravel or dirt road mixed in there, so the KTM's faster speeds may satisfy me more. Heck, I'd probably be better served by a Super Adventure 1290 S even.

      @@patw9175 Yeah depends on your purposes. I would just want a comfy bike that I can still rip around on the streets. My offroading would be limited to just gravel and dirt roads, nothing more, so I wouldn't be as concerned with weight as I would just overall comfort and power. It's why I say I would want the KTM 790 as that gives me the weight savings along with the fun power.
