My goal is to find an old clapped out MD Helicopter and rebuild it to something as good as new on the channel (with the right help) one day!!!
Love that big red white and blue behind you for the intro!
America!
You gotta have special certificates to work on aircraft don’t you?
Build a race plane with Mike patey
Hell yeahhhh let's gooo!! That would be so awesome!!
Brother!!🤯 The content is NEXT level!! Been watching since day 1 and its unreal what a guy has progressed to! Keep up the work and dont slow down!! Mind bottling where a fella will be in the next 5 years if u keep the same momentum moving forward!

I love how he actually takes the time to explain what’s going on. Most Tubers just give a short explanation. He goes down in depth with his explanations. Much respect.
Cleetus is trying to teach
I could definitely land after his teachings
hIS WAY OF EXPLAING IS GREAT. He idiot proofs it, but also throws little things for the more experienced as well. If this video was only about auto rotation physics i wouldve clicked out, but seeing tail rotor/different methods of failure from first person view is awesome.... toss in the chat. chefs kiss content
He is extremely smart
MR McFarland is a amazing teacher lol
He would get sick of apples lol All his students would go nuts over him and bring him a apple tree LOL.
Sensei McFarland
From being a cameraman for 1320 to being a pilot and running his own business this man does it all
gambled on himself and is definitely winning
How the f fid we get here?!😂 This dude got from exhaust whistles and shattering car windows with a spark plug to a teacher of how an heli works😅 wtf😅 i love it❤
From turbo whistles to explaining helicopters. The growth in this channel is just amazing! Love watching it every step of the way. Atta boy Cleet🤘🏼
Amazing how he has progressed
We got land and air, next up Cleet will be driving aircraft carriers
Wow I’m shocked at how easy it was to understand when cleet was explaining how a helicopter works/ can safely land with no motor
I was going to make my own comment, but yeah. I have a small amount of heli knowledge, and I was blown away by how easy he explained it.
Don't try this at home.
Smarter every day did an AMAZING video on autorotations. Explains everything super well!
Something none of them mention or explain is the disc loading of a helicopter. The heavier the helicopter the more difficult autorotation is to virtually impossible. If you are in a helicopter that weighs a 1000kg and downward air velocity is only 5ms, you only have to descend at 5ms to maintain rotor rpm, but try doing that in a helicopter that weighs 10000+kg with thrust velocity of 30+ms. Arresting such mass with such velocity is very difficult.
If you can’t explain it to a 5 year old you don’t fully understand it yourself
I'm in complete awe of these instructors. Their earnestness mixed with a plethora of knowledge makes this so interesting from a third person perspective. We need guys like this in high school classrooms.
There's a difference between someone who knows what they are doing, and someone there for a paycheck. I agree, these guys were fantastic.
These instructors likely make about 5 times as much as a typical high school teacher, and work half as many hours. That might be a hint as to why they don't seem "burned out"...
@@ChristopherHallettyou might be surprised how much flight instructors make
My father has a private air strip behind his house where they train new pilots. The instructor is always working 10-12 hour days
What does earnestness mean?
Dude, You just received some excellent emergency procedure training that most pilots don't receive. Congrats on passing the test! Well done to you and your Buds!
Don't mean to be that guy but all pilots train emergency procedures.
@TeflonNapkins You're absolutely correct. Not sure what that other guy is talking about.
@@TeflonNapkins You are both correct. I should have been more clear on my statement. I concur that pilots receive training on emergency procedures as part of their training for the type of aircraft they are getting checked out in. Cletus received his training from the MD factory and most pilots don't receive that training..
Love the helo content as a former Blackhawk pilot. I've autorotated hundreds of times. My first flight in NVGs we lost an engine during an autorotation. That'll wake you up in the middle of the night! Waiting on the call to come pick up my Trackhawk and meet you!
Heli, not helo...
I love positive instructors!
They make the learning process so much more enjoyable and memorable.
This is some sick content!!! Love it!!!
Cleetus is a beast.... everything he touches he accels at... super cool seeing you fly man.
Except law school
Lets be honest if he finished law school we would have known him as the best lawyer😂
The guy is a natural wheelman.
Cleet is literally addicted to adrenaline!
@@tmdwu3110the field of law is saturated with too many people anyways, competition is stupid crazy.
This is what I love about cleetus and this channel. You never know what he's going to do next and what adventure he's going to take us all on! 💯❤ it!! Thanks Mr McFarland 👍
That was friggin awesome Cleet! Thanks for taking us along for your aviation training. Was really cool learning / experiencing something so unique in a sense, alongside you. 🙌
As someone who appreciates knowledge I'll probably never need in my life, I love this video. Thank you for continuing to be the absolute best channel on TH-cam! Keep up the great work!
It’s rad to watch like a 700 size rc helicopter do a cool autorotation landing, I can’t imagine watching a real helicopter do it in person let alone be the pilot!! Such a sick skill man! Killer job Cleet!
700 is the scale reference for helicopter? Is it a 1-1000 system similar to how I've seen model planes listed as a percentage? Like is that the helicopter equivalent to a 70% scale model airplane? Or is it a different system?
@@goosenotmaverick1156based on a quick search 700 refers to the length of the blades. So the blades would be 700mm long.
i flew aerobatic rc helicopter competitions for years and we have driven tails during autos so we can do all sorts of tricks. and since we run equal pitch positive or negative (i usually had it setup for +11, -11) you can do inverted autos with a pushover near the deck to really wow the crowd... Many different trick autos you can do but the one trick auto i never tried was the blade stop auto. I just never had that kind of disposable cash lol. In rc helis most of us end every flight with autos so that "when" a real failure happens its a walk in the park, usually lol.
Been flying rc planes and drones for years. Helicopters are just too damn expensive to crash so i try not to buy one :D@@wingtipsworld5909
@@bigdfitness5020 a 700 in the rc world is a pretty big boy. most amateur pilots start off with a medium sized or a 450. Autorotations are super sick!
I love the fact that Cleet is making advanced aviation videos. This is so much fun to watch. I usually have to go digging for this kind of video. Keep up the great work! Old Cleeter stacking up those certs.
Garrett is one of those rare individuals who has the intelligence to understand the theory of things, the tactile ability to feel what's happening, and the personality to convey what he's doing, and what's happening, to his viewers.
It was clear right from the start - and when you throw in the business sense and networks he's developed, for a young man he has a huge future in front of him that he's EARNED, every step of the way.
Of his millions of subscribers, there may be only a couple who could, and can, do this, but as an inspiration to folks, i would hope they realise there are aspects they CAN emulate from what he, and his team, have done!
Remember, "You don't have to be THE best, you just need to be YOUR best"!
Wasn’t he going to law school around the time he bought Leroy? No doubt the dude is smart and charismatic
@@TheBigghunter01
He also comes from a well-off family with what seem to be very good work ethics - his grandfather, for instance, was a high rank air-force officer, not "just" a Mustang jockey.
Even as someone with flight time in fixed wing, the anxiety watching this is real. But cool, calm and collected every time. Amazing job.
Cleetus is the guy that after a few times practicing, will teach the teacher how to do it better. What a natural on every machine.
What he did was standard basic training for any helicopter pilot. It takes some practice but is not unduly difficult. If it were too difficult, then nobody would be flying helicopters.
@@RWBHereYeah no shit. Same can be said about literally anything. Go outside

I've never had an interest in flying a helicopter, or even being in one for that matter. Cleeters explanations of things were very interesting and kept my attention for the entire video. Very good.
Who would have thought not long ago its was whistle tips in the c7 now we’re at top notch race cars and aviation content. Keep up the great work and congrats on life Cleet

so glad you are taking safety classes. we will love to see your journey in aviation into the future. be safe and merry Christmas
Hit that thumbs up for one hell of a guy! Once again, including a bunch of friends in all the adventures and getting safety certified also. A epic shout out to MD Helicopter, what a place. Thanks Cleetus
My dad was a Lt. Col. In the U.S. Army. He flew the UH-1 Huey, AH-1 Cobra and OH-6 Loach. I would go watch him practice auto rotations. He hated it, lol. Im pretty sure it scared the crap out of him. Im so grateful i grew up around helicopters. Im still madly in love with rotary aircraft.
Best up your life insurance for little cleet. How many legends have died regardless of training?
Another step towards safety for McFarland aviation it blows my mind with everything you have going on you taught yourself to fly, and now helicopters two thumbs up brother

Years ago I was loader driver for Wishart Helicopters in New Zealand. Working with a Bell 47G
We were coming into the local air field after a day out working.
The pilot John Hamilton [ ex RAF ] asked if I had ever been in a helicopter when the motor cut. I told him no.
About a thousand feet over the air field he cut the motor.
All you could hear was was the swishing of the rotor blades.
He sat it on the ground beautifully
I worked with helicopters on Ag work, animal control and venison recovery.
There jus t no other aircraft like the helicopter.
I just love them
Autorotation training is terrifying but one of the most fun things you can do. This kind of training, outside of what's required, is so valuable for when a real failure happens. You can let your body and mind take over and go through everything automatically if you're trained enough. Great job Cleetus.
I know right power off in a helicopter happens fast
Outstanding episode, Cleet. The explanations and content were fantastic! Extremely well done. Keep up the great work, brother! I’ll be watching! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
This was a really great video! I don’t think I would have sought helicopter content like this but you did a great job of explaining everything and it was cool to watch you practice an interesting skill.
It was so awesome seeing you fly over and enjoy my home town area. The terrain is beautiful here! My family goes jeeping out in those desert/canyon areas and it’s always a blast.

lol, if that grey one isn't the channel's future helicopter, I'll be shocked. MD is smart, this is where their marketing budget should be. This is not just good for their brand, it's bringing awareness and excitement to the helicopter world.
I LOVE this video!! MD Helicopters are absolutely beautiful!! As Army Blackhawk CrewChief Mechanics our pilots had us train Auto Rotation landings on the Simulators, just in case. That shit was hard, I did it though. To note Helicopter Engine failure can be dealt with if you have enough forward airspeed vs altitude to trade off. But it’s Transmission failure you definitely don’t want. Game over there. BTW Awesome job Cleetus!!!
Fun that you are in my area. I see the helicopters all the time, Welcome to Mesa, AZ
I've been fascinated by helicopters since childhood, and have wanted to experience autorotation in person, preferably in a controlled situation like that. Thanks so much for this as it will probably be the closest I will ever get.
Join your local Civil Air Patrol! There's probably a helicopter pilot in a C.A.P. Squadron near you that would be willing to take you up.
If not, I'm sure there's an aeroplane pilot with a Cessna. Piper, etc. in one of those Squadrons near you and they might also do STOL flying.
There could even be a spot for training on a Civil Air Patrol "air search and rescue team" as a navigator or spotter, if you're interested in flying regularly, but don't really have the money.
That instructor was awesome, “I’ll critique myself” humble, talented pilot.
I do the same when driving and often say 'that wasn't right' or 'I shouldn't have done that'
@@morris2450only way you get better. You're probably a very good driver.
OMG, that first autorotation from 500 feet!!! As a pilot, that descent rate had alarm bells going off in my head REALLY LOUD!!
For anyone interested in a great book, look at "Chickenhawk" by Robert Mason about flying Hueys in Vietnam. They used to be able to clear their own LZ with those giant blades, trimming small trees and brush on the way in. Those giant twin blades stored so much energy that they could be sitting on the ground, fail the engine then pick up the helicopter into a hover, spin it around 360 degrees and put it back down on the ground. Great read by some very young, brave dudes.
Holy cow. Thanks for recommending that. His story on cutting that bamboo for the first time is absolutely amazing. Every heli pilot should know how heroic flying saved lives.
@@mikewest712 How did you just read an entire book in 15 minutes???
@@mikewest712 Add Low Level Hell to that list, Loach pilots are legitimately insane with some of the shit they pulled scouting for the Cobras.
I, I mean we, smell a setup lol@@Vashtorical
That is precisely the story that came to my mind when Garret was talking about stored energy. it's a good book, the ending shocked me. I'd also recommend Permission to Kill by Brian Wizard to get the story from the boys in the back.

Of course Cleet out does the instructor. Anything with a motor, he already excels at it. So smooth.
Dave with the sleeves cut odd was hilarious!
One of my favourite uploads ever! Been thinking of adding flying to the list of accomplishing lately and was set on a plane until now. The way an helicopter operates is not common knowledge and glad to now understand the basics of how it works!

What amazes me the most is that they are so confident in their training that they do those test next to a line of aircraft.

I am a student pilot so I really enjoy the aviation content and with my love for cars this channel is starting to be the best of both worlds thanks
I used to think that once the engine stopped, it was game over. Now, I have newfound hope, as long as there are no trees or obstacles in the way.

What's great about that is you were able to bring actual friends with you to enjoy that experience

Important skills to have so if it hits the fan you'll know what to do and walk away. Like playing in a big parking lot in the snow taught me what my car does and how to get out of it if it goes bad. Was great fun doing donuts and has saved my butt many times since 👍
That's exactly how I was taught to drive in snow. We went out driving, dad stopped and stuck me behind the wheel, randomly pulling E brake handle to simulate a random loss of traction. It taught me a lot about car control, and it's the first thing I do every winter to make sure I haven't lost the muscle memory.
This winter it's my wife's turn. She's a great driver but no experience in winter weather as a driver, only a passenger.
@@goosenotmaverick1156 I did it on my own in my Dart. We used to have a dog track close by where I lived so huge parking lot empty during the winter. Every time it snowed I'd go there and play. I put sway bars and a sure grip in it and had great fun relearning how to drive the car again. Posi really changed how the car reacted but once I knew what it did I was drifting and spinning it around the nose and other dumb stuff.
@@69Dartman oh yeah that'll change the dynamic for sure, sounds like fun! I generally go to our local mall parking lot. The old Sears is a gym and a government office now, and the JcPenney is dead even in the best weather. For the most part nobody even cares, as long as we don't interfere with business or crash into anything and damage it (sometimes a car gets broken but rare) the cops don't kick anyone out. It's honestly a pretty healthy way for a lot of the younger crowd to go teach themselves and have a little fun where everyone has consented to the risk. It's totally unorganized and unplanned, but it tends to work really well for the area. Last year there was every kind of car. I see all sorts hanging out and chatting, taking their respectful turns at hooning. I was impressed by the younger crowd from our area, for sure.
There were trucks, Ford fusions (multiple, as in 3 or 4 different ones)
The typical challenger, charger, 300, etc.

Old stuff and new, it gave me some faith in humanity last year for a few moments.
@@goosenotmaverick1156 Oh yeah, the cops never bothered me or anyone else doing it. It would get really busy sometimes so you had to keep your head on a swivel and pick your spots. I almost slid into a pole one time and nothing was working so I tapped the brakes and it just stopped 🤔 usually hitting the brakes was the last thing you'd do and just made things worse. Guess between the friction and the snow piling up in front of the tires it worked.
Many thanks for making and sharing this excellent video on auto rotations. The section which deals with auto-rotations on take off reminded of a moment last week during my instruction flight on a Robinson 44. I was reprimanded by my flight instructor because I was flying above the height prescribed in the Height-Velocity Diagram and in so doing had ventured into the Dead Man's Curve. The significance of my infraction was that, had my engine failed during that take off, the Robinson would not have had enough energy safely to auto-rotate. So in future I have to focus on keeping the helicopter no more than 5 feet above ground until about 50 knots at which point I can go up to 10 feet and then at 60 knots start climbing out at 60 knots. It's sort of scary to be so close to the ground initially but I guess there's no alternative.
honestly the level of trust in nuts, one mishap and its the instructor and you.
This is incredible! Is there anything Cleetus can’t do?!
Yea Id say that MD is a bit better than a R44. Hehee
I got my PPL SEL back in 2002. I was checked out in a C150, C172, and C182. The last plane I flew had a full Garmin 1000 sweet. I'm no longer current. Around 6 years ago a bought a helicopter ride in Las Vegas. It was a Sweitzer 300. The instructor was very thorough. We practiced ground maneuvers, hovering and such. when we actually got flying he gave me the controls. I don't know if he was trying to sell me lessons, but he said I was a natural and did really well. Well I live in CA, so I obviously couldn't take lessons from him, but it was a great time. Thanks for the video!
Ol' Cleet is a hell of a wheelman. Dude can wheel stuff that ain't even GOT wheels.
Anyone else get nervous as hell just watching this? Hopefully you are never in a situation that requires you to use this training. Excellent training video. Thank you for sharing such an awesome experience !!!
Guy who has the record for the highest flight in a helicopter also has the record for a landing with no engine on when landing. Made both records in 1 flight, accidently.
I mean, might as well right? You are already up there. 😅
was it a case of " FUCK IT, HOLD MY BEER" or FUCK!! Hold my beer!
Awesome to see the rotors move as you auto rotate after having how it works explained
I fly to/from work in the offshore oilfield industry 2+ times a month. Pilots in Bell 407s we fly sometimes have tried to explain this to me (as a passenger up front with them via headset) and I've always wondered if I could land the bird with a pilot incapacitated... This makes me way more confident now so thanks!!
Collected Rudder and stick. It’s a balancing act. Flying the helo isnt the hard part. It’s landing because as you slow down there’s no stabilizing force counteracting rotor torque so you have to use rudder to negate it.
The fact that you practice emergency auto rotation right next to all of the those planes tied down was giving me a butt pucker factor of 10 out of 10.
I was thinking the same thing aren’t they a little close to the parked airplanes
That instructor builds confidence and in my opinion is one of the best tools to build for success
