    Have been anticipating this video for quite a while, as Oozes are an utterly fascinating creature type, despite them usually being mindless and reduced to worldbuilding afterthought. I myself am currently playing a Chameleon Gnome Transmutation Wizard that has a whacky theory that all life used to be free of form and a civilization of sentient slimes (a reference to one of my original settings where they are one of the five playable species by the name of Lein'o'cant, "free of form" in elven) that ruled both Golarion and the First world before the first gods arrived and forced the vast majority of life into forms that fit their image, with Aakriti being one of the few who escaped such a fate and ascended to godhood themselves.

    • @TheMythKeeper
      @TheMythKeeper  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I really like that as an origin story of Aakriti.

    Black puddings are my personal favorite. In my homebrew setting in the sewers of some cities, black puddings and other oozes are magically sealed and eat on the detritus and offal flushed down there. Thanks for the video!

    Slimes are definitely one of my top 3 favorite fantasy creature types, with goblinoids and undead up there with them, in no particular order. There's just something charming about the traditionally "low-level" monsters, although when I first played original Baldur's Gate, the oozes were actually busted if you didn't have a magic weapon yet, a very different enemy experience compared to the Dragon Quest slimes I was used to.
    I like the mind moppet because I think it would make a cool little familiar.

    They tend to hang out with mimics after surviving another hard infiltration attempt at the caverns.

  • @justincherry4027
    @justincherry4027 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

    Oh man new vid cool! I don't know if you know this but there are very few ways of controlling a slime in pathfinder and one of those ways is being in the shifter class. There's an ooze archetype that's typically considered evil but not for any reason that can be backed up. A shifter that can become ooze and control ooze, very neat.

    • @TheMythKeeper
      @TheMythKeeper  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      "Evil" is in the eye of the beholder anyway - become an ooze master!

    • @ColinGrym
      @ColinGrym 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah, it doesn't make sense that they'd be inherently evil unless it was a subclass that depended on something like the patronage of the demon lord Jubilex. If it's just shapeshifting there's no reason a good adventurer couldn't use it - it's not like acid, poison, or bludgeoning damage is inherently more wicked than an arrow or sword.

  • @ColinGrym
    @ColinGrym 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    I love that Pathfinder has a Grey Goo scenario. One could imagine such swarms being anathema to gods of nature or simplicity because of their complex artificial origins, and perhaps they would grant magnetic or EMP spells that ignore biological life and selectively destroy anything electronic. Like localized divine or primal Carrington Events.
    A Golarian nation might selectively breed oozes to be less attracted to flesh and more to waste, mold, fungus etc because they'd make any medieval or rural sewer system much less likely to spread dangerous diseases like e. coli. or dysentery. Akin to the real-world idea of reintroducing oysters to city coasts and harbors to clean water by acting as filters for organic and inorganic waste. One could imagine a niche guild maintained by temples of deities of civics or medicine that travels the country monitoring breeding, transporting oozes where they are needed and killing off oozes that become too aggressive. You could have adventure hooks like unregulated alchemy in a city has resulted in chromatic oozes in stagnant pools in the sewers, or perhaps the civic authorities hire the party for a routine cull of overpopulated low-level oozes that leads to the discovery of wickedness beneath the city...

    • @TheMythKeeper
      @TheMythKeeper  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Honestly if any players ever ask me why there are so many oozes in the sewers of Golarion's cities I'll just point them to this post. You're absolutely right, in a fantasy world is a perfectly hygenic disposal system. Plus unless you're a crazy loot-hungry adventurer, you're not *supposed* to be messing around in the sewers.

    • @ColinGrym
      @ColinGrym 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@TheMythKeeper It could be a rite of passage. In rural areas you clear out goblins, but near cities goblins/kobolds etc are long gone so new adventurers get hired to do a pass through the undercity.
      "I remember my first sewer contract - my missus wouldn't so much as glance at me for a month afterwards! Some people forget, but you're definitely gonna want to know which bathhouse you're headed to afterwards. If Alya is still running hers over on Knight's Row, drop my name and tell you're coming from a "civics course" - that's what I used to call those contracts. She's a devout follower of Abadar so she's quite keen on 'for the good of the city', and she'll get you feeling top-notch in no time.
      Oh, and don't prepare any fire magic or grenades...last time a group forgot that it cost 5 lives, almost a hundred gold in repairs, and all of downtown reeked for days."

    I never really liked Oozes, but the lore in Pathfinder is really creative-so many possible origins and themes at play. And some of them are actually pretty cool. In particular, I’m kind of taken with the idea of an Id Ooze NPC sage or scholar of some kind to act as employer or ally of the heroes.

      This is a great idea but I'd also be remiss if I didn't point out that I've discussed some of these already in my ancestry guides.
