Spirit Bears are the same species as the kermode black bears (Ursus americanus kermodei). The difference is that spirit bears result from a genetic mutation that causes them to be born white (it's also the same gene that causes red hair in humans). As such, it's normal for two black black bears to have a white cub and for a spirit bear to have a black cub. It's precisely like with black leopards and white tigers. Also, male cubs with spirit bear moms are more likely to mate with other female spirit bears, regardless of their own fur color.
