If you go to University to gain work experience and learn about workplaces as much as possible, then it is not a waste of time.
If you go to have a theoretical backgrounds, then yes it could be a waste of time considering the free online resources.

I like that this video presents a very well-considered argument, and highlights the nuances of the discussion rather than just giving a blanket 'yes' or 'no'. Personally, I did an IT degree and now work in a completely different field, so the most valuable lessons I learnt at uni probably involved 'soft' skills (eg. teamwork and collaboration) rather than the actual content of my course.

I’ve taught for 15 years at a University (in the UK) and I agree. Education and knowledge are not the same thing. A passive participant ends up with a collection of information, which means nothing if they don’t know how to use it, or have any idea how to communicate it.

Used to be true, but that changed years ago. I thought online was a joke at first but quickly saw the benefits. Predatory lending weights down a couple of generations now. Prices are insane. Public education likely won't keep up with what it needs to best serve the needs of students, it never has. Lots of problems, consider carefully, decades of your future are at stake. Good topic.
BTW, I heard that college loan was considered a 'goog kind of debt'. Is this true and if so was it the loan company and/or school promoting it. Seems corrupt and actionable.

Stay in School! For the love of Pete!
I'm 55. Not having a college degree has been an extreme hit on my lifelong financial earnings. I earned between 25% to 50% of my peers. And while money isn't everything, the impact was that I never had any savings, and I never had health insurance until my late 30s, and my financial contributions to Social Security were so low that, were I to retire on that I would spend my senior years in poverty.
I have watched the life-outcomes of my peers, some of whom attended university and some who did not. The career and wealth results are not fundamentally predicted by that factor. Race and gender played big roles, personality, drugs, chance, these also mattered. But in my small observations - and certainly my own life - having a college degree was the largest predictive factor in financial stability. And of course, in the US, there are tons of statistics to back this up. Not only do incomes lag, but career advancement is heavily stymied - people are constantly promoted to leadership above you.
I could not attend university in my teens and 20s primarily due to the cost, which in the1980s was a small fraction of the cost for most American universities today.
I was a self-taught computer programmer back in the 1990s, and eventually made a good income. But the lack of a degree always held me back from landing jobs. So the degree thing is enormous.
So now I am 10 weeks away from completing my undergraduate degree in CS. And I can say something about being a life-long learner vs. studying in school.
Aside from the credential, which I cannot stress enough is a profound difference in probable life outcomes, at least here in the US, there is the obvious goal of education. In my experience, an accredited university education provides a standard of experiences and demands that are essentially not available without university. The curriculum is a core issue. We will always be self-learners, but in doing so we are seldom exposed to the depth of detail found in university study. Guidance is crucial. Even with decades in the field, I did not known what computer science topics were important to know beyond what my jobs and curiosity. Without those, it is hardly science at all.
I have always been very self motivated, and it's true that self-learning is vastly different today with the Internet. But TH-cam's recommendation algorithm is designed to maximize user clicks, eyeballs, and TH-cam's profits. They are not a substitution for a legitimate curriculum designed by educational leaders in their field. And obviously, the discussion forums of the comments section is generally a minefield of bots and trolls.
Finally, the question about whether university is a waste of time is presented as a personal choice: will you personally benefit most from university or not? And while that's a hugely important question, there's an even bigger question it provokes. What are the consequences to society if people reject university? This is like the herd-immunity issue in the vaccination debate. There are a million ways to improve the university system - and I am a constant proponent of no-bullshit criticism of the modern university system's failures - but the thing driving virtually all major advancement in every advanced field is the university system, and mass popular participation in it. Are doctors perfect? Certainly not. Do doctors mess up all the time. Sure. Do I want a doctor without a degree? No fucking way. An attorney? No. A structural engineer? Nope. A pilot? No.
The purpose of certification and accreditation regimes is to promote the social good of identifiable qualification and expertise in a field. Sure there are problems. Sure, some tiny fraction people will not individually benefit from a university education. But statistics on the economic consequences of a college degree are unambiguous. And the chances are - you and I, individually are normal and will fall into the normal distribution of consequences.

Great advice! Unfortunately because people tend to be so young when they go, they are often too shy to ask questions in lectures and seminars. In my opinion, it is certainly true that you can basically get almost all the information you need for you to self study however there are times when you lose motivation to study. For instance, I am an undergraduate physics student and there were times where I was not getting the concept in some part in physics and I was not doing well, I was in dilema. However I reached out to my friends who are also studying physics and they helped me out so much that I gained momentum again to keep on going.
To conclude, I think it is worth the money if you really want to study along with the best people who also want to study just as much as you do. Basically what tibees said. Nice video!!!

One positive thing about university is the sense of community that it gives you. Sometimes it is nice and makes life a little bit easier to know that the rest of your class is struggling with the same thing that you are. Studying on your own is hard and requires a lot of self-discipline, especially if you don't know where to begin. In that sense, I feel uni programs provide a path. Experienced people from the field have come together and constructed a program with courses given in a certain order so that you may learn as optimally as possible (or so I hope). It can be hard to figure out in what order you should learn things as a complete beginner.

Great video. I agree with the point of universities realizing or needing to realize they may need to change their business models a bit to give people a reason to keep attending. The only reason so many people still go to university, at least here in the US, is because the system practically locks you into that, unless you want to take a risk and be moderately miserable working a regular full time job the rest of your life. If you want a good paying, high-level rewarding job, chances are you'll need a degree to show you have what it takes to be qualified for that position. I get it, I really do, but that's somewhat starting to change and I hope it continues to do so.

Thank you for this video! I will be graduating high school soon (yay!) and I've been trying to decide whether or not I would like to go to university. At my school it seems like most people generally expect that most students (especially ones interested in STEM subjects) will go to university. (Probably) Because of this there are few resources out there with information on options other than university and there seems to be little discussion of some of the more nuanced values of university. Like how you mentioned that university allowed you to get a better understanding of academia and how there's a lot of other skills in becoming a part of extracurriculars and learning alongside others. That was interesting to hear, especially from someone who has gone to university.
Because I live in the U.S. and I don't know if I'm ready to live in a new country yet, university would likely be pretty expensive for me. I also have some ADHD and anxiety stuff so I have found that I learn much better with online resources (as I can do things like pause videos and go back and re-watch something, and I can work at my own pace like you mentioned). At the same time though I understand there are a lot of other things like the social connections and skills regarding this that I would learn at university. Although I have been wondering if there are other ways to get these skills from things like meetup groups and other things like that to be able to get these social connections and skills. But there's a lot of interesting things to consider. This video has been interesting to hear for me trying to make my decision.
Thank you so much for your videos!

The first two years. At least at JMU. There is like the first year requirements. General Education classes.
The last two years are like Capstone projects and group based. I looked at the curriculum for a lot of majors and there are overlaps.
And to be honest. It is a waste of money.
Any public library provides the same tools. Books at a dollar a piece.
Work is not bad either. Anyone can begin on working on their portfolio from there and save money for university.
Side note. There is inflation with college and university and it is not worth it. Take it from someone who went being poorly advised.
Even with community college(s). It is a certain amount of money per credit. And even looking at those cost(s)
One class is equivalent to a week's paycheck from Safeway.
A week's paycheck at Safeway is like 20 - 22 hour weeks, part time that is.

Quote from Emerson: “The things taught in schools and colleges are not an education, but the means to an education.” You bring up very good questions regarding the value of university education in general. We have been led to believe that student loan debt is "good debt," as it should lead to a better life (more satisfaction in work, better remuneration, etc.). With the skyrocketing increase in tuition cost and with the availability of much less expensive options for acquiring knowledge and work skills (e.g. edX, coursera, udacity, udemy), however, the questions you bring up could not be more relevant and important. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and for inviting people to think critically about education. I think that you are spot on in regards to being an actively engaged learner regardless of your learning path. I also think that it is important to have some vision as to how one's education will help one move along a trajectory to something better. So many students are taking on debt only to come out on the other side with a degree that offers limited opportunities (think art history or sociology). Thank you!

I enjoyed my time in university, however one of the problems was that there was little time for extra curricular activities. I took Engineering Physics, and the course load left little time for pursuing those other things. One of the reasons for that was this misguided idea (at least in my opinion) that they also had to make us "well-rounded". The so called "electives" (which were seldom truly elective) took up unnecessary time, which could have been used to pursue those things that were really are of interest. The impression I get, is that it was much different in the 1960's and earlier.
It wasn't until I did my Masters Degree, that I could do some of those extra curricular things without sacrificing my marks.
Not sure if that is the same today as it was 25 years ago, I hope not, but I doubt it.

      I speak to older people.
      So to make a point.
      A 4 year degree would costs like 10 k.
      Now a year is like 20 k
I worked at a Safeway for a couple of months. Part time and at 20 - 22 hours a week. I saw relatively $1000.
Now how can I afford a college or university education with that ?
Even when looking at a community college. It is dollars per credit. So I probably would not even be able to afford a class at a community college even after a week's check.

I'm currently at the end of my 3rd year in undergrad in a Japanese university. I spent the past years in labs, libraries, and at home trying to find "my passion", learning about and coding things like reinforcement learning, complex systems, etc., with little to no sleep (2~4 hours on average per semester; not impressive, but it still hurts). I am currently at a point where I have had this depression and anxiety thing that I have been getting treated for in a mental clinic for a year, and I basically hate everything and don't really care about the things that intrigued me when I was in freshman. I'm even planning to take a medical break next semester, which would prolong my graduation. It doesn't help that my grades have dropped significantly during the past few years and that I'm aiming to go get masters as well.
Is university a waste of time? Honestly, I don't really care if it is. I'm already in too deep lol. Apologies for my selfishness.
As you have stated in the video, Toby, it would depend on how much effort the student is willing to put into their academic life. In my case, it definitely taught me how to push myself even further to do some work, but I probably won't be able to maintain nor invoke that kind of energy again. But I have seen acquaintances around me starting from having much difficulty programming or understanding mathematic topics becoming really competent at those subjects.
I guess only time will tell....

I agree with that to a certain point, but I would argue that ignoring your interest can also become stressful over time. That was actually my case. I sort of realized that the thing that I was doing in the lab wasn't what I was truly interested at the core, and I was merely following the demand of the lab.
But you still have a point. I don't think I've experienced that type of burnout, yet. Honestly, I'm not really sure what to do.....lol, because I was sort of planning to experiment with stuff that I've always wanted to make during the break. But listening to your story, I have a feeling that I should reconsider my choices. Hmmm....

A waste of money is yes. Time is disputable. I have been through that system and it is not worth it. Maybe if you have rich parents or you yourself is rich and can pay for it, but for an average person making 10 k - 20 k a year on the lower end of earnings.
These decisions are more difficult. Psychologically that is. I can give you an example from my own experience(s).
I worked at a Safeway for a couple of months at 7 an hour. A little more. But not 8 dollars an hour and made relatively $1000.
I was at university and my Calculus textbook was like $250 without tax.
With $1000, you can probably purchase a car.
In terms of economics. It is a huge waste of money and a big scam. Again I am not you, but strictly speaking of my own experiences.
There is also the debt trap and debt enslavement, which they do not talk to you nor tell you about.
And I would like to point out that any public library has books which anyone can pick up and start reading and learn just as much from, if not more.
Books at the public library are a dollar a piece. So in terms of economics. Which is best ? The thousands of dollars spent on a degree ? Which most jobs do not require or the dollar or two investment at a local library, knowing you will learn the same thing ?
Work is also an option and anyone starting of would be trained. Have to apply first and get an interview. And even as it relates to jobs. There is always the possibility of being rejected.
They also don't tell you that you will be harrassed to make monthly payments.
And even as I entered repayment. There is still one thing that I don't understand.
Who are you paying back ? I am guessing the government. Not the school directly ? Right ?
Side note. A magnetic resonance image or scanning is no more than $500.

Nice video, if anything I've found university to be stifling to my curiosity, I find many lecturers (not all) are too busy/ not interested enough to do more than the bare minimum required and will often avoid questions if at all possible, perhaps I've just been unlucky. Also, for many modules disenfranchised postgrads are used as fodder so the lecturers can spend their time doing research instead. There doesn't seem to be any emphasis on inspiring students to expand their minds, instead it feels like a sausage factory where memorization is valued over understanding and critical thinking.

Free ? Who do you think payed for the equipment. The school from your tuition.
And again. On university. It is nothing more than a debt trap. They do not tell you this. A least is the case for those who borrowed money. In loans that is. And the loans have high interests on them.
And even if you do not finish, you are given a couple of months to find work and start paying those loans back. It is a business and these institutions are profiting from these students who may or may not know better. Until they get a little older and realize that they have had lied to.
The public library or libraries offer the same content(s) at a dollar a piece and the information is the same. Anyone can go to a local public library, granted that he or she is able to walk and pick out what interests him or her.
Now in terms of an economic view. Which is cheaper ? The thousands of dollars spent at a school or the dollar or two ?
I am no economists, but anyone with some reasoning skills and common sense will and would point to the public libraries.

Whereas, the more creative academic schools (art, music, dance, etc.) are basically useless. As you can easily find useful tips and tutorials on the internet.

With many colleges starting to cost in excess of a couple hundred thousand dollars to graduate with a basic degree, alternatives will certainly emerge in the information age. A wise student who just wanted financial success could just take the money, invest it early, and retire to a life of fun and games. One thing that universities do that will be interesting to replace is "sorting". People get graded in competition and bell curves. The online course grades are really easy to fake-out. Employers have to use "reading" or other techniques to tell if on-line-only graduates are really of high aptitude and eagerness, or if they just used a mix of GHEGG and Alpha to get the marks.

I think this is really 2 questions. Is an average college worth it? And is a top tier university worth it?
I think it is still the safer move to get a college education. A lot of businesses are run by an older generation that still looks to a college degrees rather than skill and results as extremely important indicators of a person's skill and credibility. Course quality is going to be hit or miss. Some classes will be worth it. Others will just increase your workload, destroy your confidence, and damage your mental health. In general, I think people should just take the easiest courses and get the bare minimum for their major. If you're really passionate about anything look for research opportunities in the field and do your own independent projects. It's also important to focus on the social aspect of college. Not just parties, but extracurricular clubs can help you build lifelong relationships.
I went to Johns Hopkins in the US for undergrad. It's a school famous for its medical school and research achievements. I would say do all the things you would for a normal college plus some nuances. On the negative side, I don't think course quality goes up by a whole lot. You're going to have some real hit or misses. On the positive side, the door opens for many more professional networking opportunities. I really squandered my opportunities, but I've known people who have begun startups with doctors, begun experiments by networking with PIs (Primary Investigators), coauthored scientific papers, and more.

The phrase "with networking, it's not what you know but who you know" means that in the professional world, having connections and relationships with people can be more valuable than just possessing technical knowledge alone, especially when seeking jobs or opportunities in college; essentially, your network can open doors to new possibilities even if you might not have all the required skills yet.
      Key points about this saying:
      Importance of connections:
Building relationships with professors, alumni, industry professionals, and peers can lead to valuable job leads, recommendations, and insider information about career paths.
      Beyond just skills:
While technical skills are crucial, having a network can help you access opportunities you might not otherwise find on your own.
College as a prime networking time:
College provides a unique environment to build a strong network early in your career, with easier access to potential mentors and connections.

I found it to be quite shocking for professors to spend so much time selling their ideas to get funding. Our professor did some teaching, rarely ever visited the labs (his PhDs might see him for a few minutes every few months, until progress report time when they might get 15 minutes) and spent so much time on the phone to get funding it was unbelievable. There is like this awful battle to get funding. So a significant part of the role for academics (leading teams of PhD students) is as a salesperson.
When university has to sell itself as think of the extracurricular activities something fishy is happening. My cousin learning to be a builder rarely had time to think of extracurricular activities. There was always too much work for him and he would still have to fit trade school in 1 or 2 days a week. It would be very entertaining for the builders to encourage extracurricular activities and not bother with the work at hand or even do the extracurricular activity while working (singing, dancing, gymnastics etc). Another cousin learning to be a chef also had problems fitting in extracurricular activities, way too much work, and the head chef did not encourage it. It is so interesting for the trades to encourage focus and university marketing at the undergraduate level to divert time away from the degree.

Hi, I went to university to gain qualifications in order to get a better job, I am 57 and it was a bit of a nightmare as nobody wanted to be involved with me due to my age This was in the uk, the biggest problem is it was full of spoiled rich kids and it was harder studying on my own, being working class I was rejected by most due to the class system which is rife in the uk, also I was hoping to overcome the age discrimination issue which exists in the employment market in the uk by becoming more than an expert, having over 35 years of industry experience, I now feel rejected and I am now pursuing other interests. And that cost me £27,000.

They do not tell you about the debt trap.
They make it seem like it is this necessary thing. It is not. I read a lot of job applications online and no more than a high school level of education is required.
Nor do they tell you that you will be harrassed to make monthly payments.
Public library or libraries are also accessible and books are a dollar a piece.
In terms of economics, which sounds more reasonable ? The thousands of dollars at an institution or the dollar you spent at the public library ?

I've had a similar experience to yours, but at a much earlier time. While it's true that knowladge was already available online back then, it wasn't as wide spread or easily accessible as it is today.
Still, attending university was a great value for me because you get a more structured view of the basics of the fields you're studying, even though most of it was a bit dated.
But ultimately study is an individual and life long endeavor and the only way you'll get somewhere is by putting in the work yourself. Ultimately I ended up not finishing my bachelor's degree, but I've met people with master's degrees and even a few with PhD who struggle to perform in the field and this is because they stooped learning.

So I trained myself in computer programming. In 2005, I got a job as software developer which required domain knowledge in mechanical stream and programming skills. On basis of that skills I came to US in 2008. To be able to become successful in job market, you always have to learn something which no university in the world teaches.

    • @perrybrown4985
      @perrybrown4985 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@rob6129 In a science/engineering field, not that hard.
Step 1: become familiar with the research which is going on in your school and get acquainted with the areas which interest you most.
2: be a (friendly) pest. Talk to the researchers about what they are doing, listen to them. They are usually passionate about what they are doing and more than willing to talk about it...
      3. Be helpful and friendly - help them put stuff away while they talk. Look at what they are doing and be interested and helpful in small ways (but don't be crazy and start reorganizing their work or taking over or anything).
      4. Often they just like having people take an interest in their stuff and listen to their problems - they are not expecting solutions from you (but often explaining things clearly to somebody helps them to organise their thinking).
Importantly - be willing to take on small menial jobs for little or no pay (it is about experience, not money)
Eventually, proper paying jobs will come along and you will be first choice. In all but my first year of Uni, I had paying jobs within the school (better than flipping burgers) - but like I originally said, it did take a lot of focus from my studies. I think in all, I was better off - but I do wish I had put a bit more effort into my coursework...
Finally - when the researchers grow up and move into industry, you will often cross paths with these people and their friends/colleagues. When you are looking to join an organisation, a good word from somebody who is already working there is worth so much more than any referee.

I think the best way to approach college is to use that University for your benefit. Actually that's a good way to approach many things in life. Know what you want to do then utilize the resources available at a University to make that happen. If you aren't clear on what your direction is, you could wind up with a degree that is not applicable or beneficial to you. I think Tibees is right, be proactive and get what you want not the other way around.
