      @Tastes Like Trash Oh nooooo a C! :) I mean clearly this was more a semester where she felt bad, but it didn't really reflect on the grades. Grades don't tell the whole story, I always struggled going the science route, barely made it, but became a scientist at one of the best groups in the Netherlands. I did change careers after a decade, but for me (and many) the real potential comes when you work somewhere that you like.
      Besides all that, no company or institute ever cared asking me my grades.

      Same. I am myself not an excellent student (I mostly get B and A, and sometimes A+) but I still understand. To make fun of a top student for getting B is often compared to a spoilt kid crying over a normal car for not getting a lambo, and it should not happen. They are trying to make it perfect, to get a good future, and we should understand them when they feel sad for getting a B

    • @nonfique429
      @nonfique429 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@theanimationlads7598 True, I haven't considered that. I went back and checked with our school's grading and anything above C- is fine by our grading, although you have to repeat classes between C+ and C- to increase your median if you get it below 2.0 (4.0 being A+, 0.0 being E). There are classes that I've failed, but they've let me take the next years classes because my median was high enough.

    Tibees, you are absolutely an amazing mind. Receiving “A”s is quite the compliment to one’s mindset and feelings of societal worth. It can become part of ones self-image to the extent that anything deviating from “A” can feel like an embarrassment. It is good to remember that grades based on test scores and subjective scores on papers are only samples at a specific time in life. In actuality, we can have our whole lifetime to learn what we wish to know, and this makes life all the more interesting. Also, knowledge is useful, but the right use of knowledge is wisdom and powerful. What uses and projects for the knowledge you have do you think are worthy of your time? Ultimately, we have a limited lifespan, so it gets down to what we value: such things as preservation of the human species, vs. expanding human knowledge, vs. entertaining, vs. enhancing human efficiency and preservation of the environment, etc. Education is preparation to do something with one’s life. However, we don’t always land where we had planned. Whatever you apply your mind too, I’m sure will be benefited. Make it a good life!

    If you guys look at her grade scale, you can see that it actually differs from most American ones. Her A+ is the entire A range for most schools in the US and her normal A is around a B+. Finally the B+ is a C+ in the US and if you can sort of understand the system she was upset because a B is equivalent to a C in using ur system. Also don’t get me wrong her grades are still astounding though I hope this clears some things up.
    Edit: Also for people wondering how she got into college at 17, it is because that is the age that I know people in the UK go to college so she might be in the UK or Canada though I don’t fully understand their school system. If Tibees sees this comment just know that I envy your school system since you can learn advanced subjects faster.

    Wooow this is so different from my experience. I am also a physicist in Mexico, but its so diferent from yourself. First I took 6 years to graduate jajajaja it "should" take 4 years, but I know only 2 people that where able to do that, and the reason for this is that here we took 2 electrodinamic curses, 2 quantum mechanic curses, 3 mathimatical method curses, 4 math courses, an statistical thermodinamic course, 3 experimantl fisics, and other stuff!
    It feels like we covered a lot, but now that I am studying my masters degree after a 2 year break (becouse litteraly my university broke me mentaly) I would think that a more humane and much less robotic way of teaching, such as in your college, would be much better. I think many people stop loving the phyisics and start liking the pain.
    But coodoes to you! you where such a good student! Congratulations!

      It's unfair to compare an English UG course with a Maths degree. Engineering has evolved from pure sciences and more or less is an extension of it. In my college students of both CSE (IT) BTech and BSc Mathematics study same mathematics concepts and even attend workshops and seminars on AI and advanced computational techniques. I'm Indian and our current education system is equivalent to the British model some half a century ago. Trust me you guys have it way better.

      AFAIK, in Aus & NZ like in UK you'd need to have done 2 years of A level to even get into Uni. That's worth a good year off the start of a degree course. For instance, in A level Math you'd learn differential and integral calculus, linear algebra etc. In the English system you either leave at 16 after O level (called GCSE these days) or stay to 18 and do 3 or 4 subjects at A level.

Then the photos of UC and Tekapo....I lived in Ilam right next Uni Hall in 2012 coming from Otago to start clinical rotations at the christchurch clinical campus. We didn't have a library or study spaces at the clinical campus due to the earthquakes. I'd spent almost every evening UC's main library leeching its warmth to save money on power and grab a comfortable spot to study. And the Mt John picture....Camping every year in tekapo with a mandatory midnight hike up Mt John was a ritual. Thank you for sharing this video and in particular the photos of UC/Christchurch and Tekapo. She took some 'politically radical' electives tho as did I. I actually did alot of theatre acting and started a Trans-support group but I never needed to take any credits for it. Being forced to take tons of lib arts courses is not true in my experience.
      I also don't like the our American attitude of delegitimizing higher ed. coming from people who are literally going to college. If you are attending/attended Uni with that mindset, it just tells me you are gonna be chronically underemployed after graduation.
