Hi Drake, this boat is similar in many ways to the boat I crew on, a 64' Simonis designed Robertson and Caine custom built Cape to Rio ocean racer SV WARRIOR, we also have rodded shrouds and backstay and running backstays the backstay is not split like the swan but is hydraulic as are the vang and removable inner forestay, she, unlike the swan has twin helms and two interlinking pedestal grinders for the main sheet and Lewmar 77 st primaries, there are no electric winches but we do have 13 self tailing cockpit winches including dedicated traveller and running backstay winches, WARRIOR is a 25 knot capable boat and averaged 10.8 knots for the Atlantic crossing in the '96 Cape to Rio ocean race, I can relate, we get 11 knots with just the cruising furled headsail with 15 knots on the beam
Thanks Terry. I think the Catalina 27 looks like a really fun boat to sail! I first started living aboard in 1995 in Boston aboard a similar boat, a 1982 Hunter 30. I knew from then on that I would always live on boats. Happy sailing, D
Thank you, we enjoyed watching your channel's Bavaria 42 and Jeanneau boat tour videos and it was really nice to see the boat show in Dusseldorf! Looking forward to seeing more of your videos, especially of when you do get to sailing! :)
Hi Terry, Thank you so much. I really do appreciate all of the feedback giving me insight on how to improve my videos. It's very helpful to hear what people didn't like as well as what they did. I hope our videos will continually get better over the years to come! I looked up 12 used Swan 48 sailboats for sale at the yachtworld website selling for between $395,000 and $595,260, with an average price of $509,270. I was surprised to see that Bella Luna is now for sale for $395,000 in Antigua.
Hi portugaluvaloda, Many thanks! We have big plans for future episodes as we sail our own boat from North Carolina to Boston, stopping everywhere on the way. Then after wintering in Boston, in Spring 2013 we plan to sail to Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Iceland, and to Ireland.
Looks like that stern platform folds all the way out to walk out to the dock aswell but wasn't folded out to the dock. Down in the water would be nice aswell. I haven't seen one like that. I have seen the big platform door that the Irwin 65 boats have.
Wow 10ft draft, not sure if that would be so great in the ICW here in Florida. Great for the oceans and careful in the Bahamas I bet.Must have a real nice dinghy when you can't get close to shore.
Wow, great job Drake! You've improved on your presentation skills dramatically, and I didn't notice one stutter or ahh, very well done. I think I could take her out for a sail after your wonderful video presentation of all the systems and functions. What a lady, the only thing missing is dancing girls. Care to tell us what a boat like that goes for? Its nice to dream….cheers TL
I've heard that cruisers sail to the most interesting and exotic place in the world and spent most of their time fixing and maintaining their boats. Seems there's always something to work on.. thanks
Indeed this is a nice sailing vessel. I like the sheeting on this boat. Seems to me very complete. Nice to see your vids every week. Unfortunately i have to wait for my retirement before i can sail :-(
Thanks Terry! Our current plan is to sail from North Carolina to Boston for the Winter and then on to Newfoundland, Iceland and Ireland for season. Then we're thinking of sailing to Brazil like s/v "Buena Vista" did (see Interviews/cruising couple Astrid and Björn/7. Where have you cruised aboard your sailboat Buena Vista?) and then on to the Panama Canal... But you never know! :) Maybe we'll see you in the anchorage someday aboard your Catalina 27!
Hi portugaluvaloda, The rest is all coming up! Over the next several months we will publish at least 1 new episode every Thursday, bringing you sailboat tours, cruiser interviews, voyage documentaries and much more! Next week on DrakeParagon... Sailing aboard Swan 48 Bella Luna - episode 2 - cabin tour. Thanks! - DrakeParagon
I don't remember for sure, but I'd bet that there's a circuit breaker switch down below for the engine. But I agree that a key would have been nice to have instead of just the button.
I'm sure it's worth that, but out of my league. I'm thinking about a Catalina 27 so I can trailer it and maybe live on as well…..keep up the great work…….TL
Norman Smith Sailing from Georgia to Tortola is entirely an offshore route. There is no land, thus no marinas, and the water is also hundreds or even thousands of feet deep so you also can't anchor for the night. If you look at the video at about the one minute mark, then you'll see an animation which shows the route.
So, you agree with me about having an ignition key. You seem like a nice guy and would pobably be fun sailing with you. I'd be getting drunk enjoying myself. I'd be the drunk mate. Hahahaha.
My mind I thought was totally made up what I would like as a boat and that was a Catamaran but watching this video it's made ne think deftly a Swan in my top 3 it's very difficult but I will only be able to afford a used one due to our hefty exchange rate
Please don't take this too seriously, but... The swan is modern classic, beautiful inside and out. Sexy boat that loves beating upwind in serious seas. A cat is a tacky floating ikea box for geriatrics. Putting them on the same list is an insult towards the swan :)
Walkertongdee New... I glanced at the Nautors Swan website - they are now producing models between 53 feet at the minimum and 115 feet, but I didn't notice any prices.
+Walkertongdee You could probably get a used one made in the early 90s for that price. Go to NautorSwanUSAeast dot com for asking prices of used Swans. Probably the price will depend on the equipment you get and the interior finishes you get. As you might imagine, another reason they don't list prices might be if you have to ask the price, you can't afford it.
I don't like that idea, of having buttons on that panel able to start the boat covered by plastic. That means anyone can steal your boat. I'd rather just have an ignition key.
Love the thorough description. Late to the party, starting with this episode will go through them all. Thanks.
Man, the Swan engineers must have had fun. So many conveniences and brilliant solutions to problems we on lesser boats face every day.

Good stuff. cant wait in see the inside.
This is an awesome walk through. Keep it up!
+Brandt Tingen Thanks, we've got a great boat tour episode coming up this Friday. :)
This must be the most beautifull boat everywhere you go!! Love it! If you ever need a crew..

Fantastic video. Thanks a lot.
By the way thanks a lot for your videos. Don't stop it ever :) Thanks

And she's FAST! Thanks for the comment cougar0189c. The interior is pretty nice too. See you next Thursday! :) Happy sailing, Drake

Cool about the mast and solid rod.
I have imagined that if I get so old that infirmity makes things more difficult, then I might switch my manual jib winches for electric ones...
what about the black line ? !
I'm sure it's worth that, but out of my league. I'm thinking about a Catalina 27 so I can trailer it and maybe live on as well…..keep up the great work…….TL
where's the rest?
1500 in ten days. i take it sailing through then night right? slow. try a trimaran.
sailing through the night as opposed to what?
DrakeParagon's The Real Cruising Life stopping for the night in a marina. The 1500 only in day time is fast.

wow, so many systems to maintain :/
Drake, if you come through Florida let me know, I'd love to talk boats and buy you a coffee……
If your hurt both arms you might need a foot switch electric.:)
Why not use electric, that grinder is lots of work I bet.
I'm guessing that boat costs about $500,000. new

Always enjoy your video's.
