Most British steam locos serve passengers, so they should look good in front of people, whereas American ones are more cargo hauling (apart from daylight) so they are more build for purpose. Plus, American steam trains have to be big and bulky because they have to travel long distances with heavy loads. Still prefer British tho. More elegant whistles for more elegant trains.
US I don't like these high pitched Whistles from the British locomotives they just sound like they have whistles problems and also Because American locomotives has more additions to them. In my opinion
i’m american and i honestly don’t care for our locomotives. the british steam locomotives have so much class and style to them, there were some really pretty ones out there with beautiful colors. the american ones look messy and uninspired imo. even as a west coast american, i can’t say i care too much for the “western mining” feel of a lot of our historic designs, the british ones are so much cooler and better to me and i can’t explain why. the gnr stirling single has to be my all time favorite locomotive, it’s too bad nothing in america even remotely compares
I care more for American Locomotives, If anything, i like how they are built, the Heavy gauge, The size, Everything, color or not, I rather prefer Most of them (freight locomotives) to be black or grey and a at least a bit of color, rather than full on coloring the freight locomotives, stresmliners tho, i donr mind American stresm liners look cool with them., and also The pipes and gears showing on the locomotives are very Interesting and fascinating, Not only that American/Canadians are the only ones to have Marker and Mars lights, Which is hella cool, especially ones that rotates, Even when it comes to the red Emergency lights.

Both has Good abilitys and what not. This is why I said those thing in the first comments. Not ever locomotives have to look decent.

I used to do with a big boy 4014 to haul freight.
9f and 8f are for freight and they still look stunning
