The Nation of Domination was one of the most prominent factions in WWF during late 1996 and 1997. The original Nation included leader Faarooq, Crush and Savio Vega, and by the time mid 1997 came around, the cracks began to form within the group. Savio Vega and Crush ended up leaving the faction in order to lead their own groups, the DOA (Disciples of Apocalypse) and Los Boricuas. The Nation of Domination was rebuilt by Faarooq, and so the three factions (or gangs) began feuding with eachother.
Also in 1997, 3 other factions were introduced to WWF audiences; The Hart Foundation, The Truth Commission, and D-Generation X. While the Truth Commission would begin a rivalry with the DOA, the Harts and DX were mostly kept away from the Gang Wars storyline. As time went on though, DX would use The Nation of Domination in order to weaken the Hart Foundation, leading to a few Harts vs Nation matches just before Survivor Series 1997.

I think the gang wars is one of the big reasons stone-cold became as big as he did because stone cold stood out as a badass amongst a sea of factions
I agree. Austin being apart of no faction really added to the lone wolf aspect of his character, and his "don't trust anybody" attitude.

I don't think Austin would have stood out if they didn't have all those stables..I hate when people write off mid card wrestlers acting like they had no impact on how big wrestling got starting in the late 90s. Immean I get why at the time people write them off. But now looking back it's hard to deny how much of an impact the mid Carter's actually had and this is a perfect example Austin became the biggest star of his timeand arguably the biggest star of all the time because he was that lone Wolf amongst a sea of gangs.. if all those factions weren't around how could he have got in that lone Wolf persona? Definitely not by just fighting a bunch of different tag teams by himself that wouldn't work.. stone cold should go around and thank every person involved in the gang warswithout them I really doubt Austin would be as big as he was
@@dustincongello5802 Owen was almost becoming the second "Stone Cold" when every Hart Foundation member departed, until he couldn't take it anymore and joined the Nation of Domination without rhyme or reason..
@@reginnatallgirl2528 no he wasn't . He was nowhere near stones colds popularity...I love Owen Hart. I even named my dog Owen when I was younger..but there was no chance McMahon would let Owen get as big as Austin got. Especially after the Montreal screwjob with Bret...Owen joined the nation because there was nothing else for him and even tho it was towards the end of the gang wars they put Owen with the nation hoping he would fizzle out under the shadow of the rising Rock...it was just something for Owen to do since Vince felt he would look like a even bigger asshole if he fired Owen after what happened with Bret.

I used to love it when Farooq would come to the ring surrounded by people, it made it feel like he was the most important guy on the planet
Fun fact: When Don Callis got signed to WWE he’d been teaming with Rick Martel in Canada as “The Supermodels.” Supposedly Vince wanted to sign them as a tag team with the idea being that Callis would eventually turn on Martel, but Martel turned the offer down because Vince lowballed him and signed with WCW instead.

I grew up in Winnipeg. He used to come into the gas station I worked at on occasion in the early 90s. He was the champion of the local territory. Nice guy. Drove a yellow mustang.

True they will never be another attitude era but I think WWE needs to at least get a little bit more edgier when it comes to your content and if that has to mean pushing an envelope on social issues and so be it I mean the fans will love that and if they get in trouble with the so-called movement then tell them to go to hell

Yep! Fans need to stop hating on Vince Russo. Sure, he missed on a few angles. He also hit homeruns as well. The Attitude Era was a good portion of his skits and idea's. Vince should get credit as well. He greenlights the final product, and he overseen far more back in the 90s. The Mr. McMahon character, was the foundation of what was to come throughout the end of the decade into the next. Vince will always be the greatest heel of all time, and his promos were what made you love to have him every Monday night on Raw.

WWE has been pg most of it's existence. Attitude era was the outlier and Vince only did it because WCW was kicking his ass. No competition, no quality.

1997 was the company's best year in my opinion and I loved this gang/stable stuff. Like everything else some of it was hit and miss or overkill but the Nation, Hart Foundation and DX stuff was amazing.

The gang wars did carry over into 1998. I went to the RAW 2 weeks after Wrestlemania 14(the night Stone Cold challenged Vince for the title) and one of the first matches was DOA vs Los Boriquas in a chain match that ended up a no contest as DX interfered.

Especially if you don't actually suffer through the undercard. Sometimes it was great, sometimes it was boring garbage that seemed to only be booked to bury people. But credit where it's due: they'd try anything.
Imagine if The American Badass Undertaker became the leader of the DOA. They would have definitely become a powerhouse faction then.

@@planescaped In 1997, Stone Cold went from heel to white hot baby face ready to take over the mantle. Bret turned heel & laid the foundation for both Austin & Vince's character getting over. The Rock finally turned heel & officially became The Rock. Chyna & Triple H joined HBK to form DX. Paul Bearer revealed Undertaker's secret. This led to Kane's debut. 1997 wasn't as popular as 1998,1999, or 2000-1. But, it laid the foundation for the AE.
I once read/heard an interview from Jim Ross on the Gang Wars. The main reason was that it was the fastest way to showcase upcoming talent and hopefully, create superstars.

Don Callis aka the jackal aka Cyrus the virus (ecw) . He was cutting excellent promos it was groundbreaking stuff I loved his jackal character . I heard in a shoot that he had heat backstage because he got over at the expense of the wrestlers he managed not intentionally I think but the guy had charisma no doubt . You should do a feature about him or least the raw episode where he is cutting a promo while descending in a scaffold during a ongoing match great stuff.

He joined WWE to be a wrestler and he wanted to wrestle. During this time he was trying to insert himself in everything he could in the hope that they'd let him have a go as a singles wrestler. They only wanted him to talk.

Another great video. 97 is when McMahon was open to fresh ideas in order to complete with the WCW/nWo storyline. Heels in conflict with other heels. I know he wasnt too much of a draw but Savio Vega is criminally underrated as a worker.
yes and Bull Buchanan (otherwise known as "B2"). Remember they rebranded him as a rapper and he was kind of the guy who put John Cena over. But he never got the credit he deserved.

Not gonna lie, With Kurrgan in the group and their eerie theme music, I did find The Truth Commission to be a scary stable.

Back in 97, I always viewed the Truth Commission as the winners of the whole "Gang Wars" when they decimated the DOA at the Survivor Series and Kurrgan becoming the second scariest big man besides Kane with him taking Crush out

Its interesting with Los Boricuas how they were nobodies in WWE, but in Puerto Rico they are like superstars, specially Savio Vega. The thing all commentators always mention about Vega is him beating Stone Cold in a Caribbean Strap match as the biggest highlight of his career.

@@attiepollard7847 I prefer 1998. Austin was in full force, X-Pac (one of my favorites) returned, The Brood, Ministry Darkness, Hell in a Cell, Kane vs. Undertaker at Wrestlemania, heel McMahon at his best. 1997 is great, but I’m going with 1998.

I remember literally changing the channel when ever these “ gang “ matches were on RAW. I’d watched whatever and waited it out till it was over .

In a sense it was the Gang Wars that lead to the rise of Stone Cold Steve Austin; the constant battles between factions made the angry loner who didn't trust anybody standout all the more.
At 17:55 you mention that Sniper and Recon formed a tag team that basically dissapeared as soon as they were created. I have a memory of seeing a tag team from years ago right towards the end of the Gang Wars on Shotgun Saturday Night and for years I havent been able to find them online or anywhere else. The mystery has been solved, they were called "Armageddon" thanks to this video. A match and likely just about the only one they ever had under this moniker is on DailyMotion. It can be found by searching quebecers vs. armageddon. Thanks Wrestling Bios for helping me solve that long time memory.

Another awesome upload. I think 1997 was the best year for wrestling, as others have said. It was before the Attitude era really took off and the angles got overly silly, as they did from about mid 98 onwards. By the end of 97 everything in the WWF seemed red hot. You could tell they were pulling out all the stops trying to get back on top of WCW. The company changed so much throughout 97. From the beginning to end of the year
I didn’t mind the gang wars too much, it was far from the most interesting angle of WWF in 97. Keeping the mid card busy and I think it was a way to try and counter what WCW was doing with the NWO VS WCW, which was like a gang war. However at the same time not making it the focal point of the company.
I remember it quite clearly Farooq firing Crush and Savio to build “a bigger, blacker nation” and Crush and Savio starting their own “gang”. This would also go on to help The Rock immensely and the nation is what helped his career take off. Also I think the biker gimmicks of DOA was a predecessor to “Biker Taker”.

I think gang wars was just another 1 of those things that started off good & had so much potential but in the end wwe let fans down just like the invasion angle. Now I know war games was a wcw thing but I think wwe could've came up with a similar match just change a few things & call it a different name kinda how tna copied MITB with their fight or fired match or more recently and obvious is the aew blood & guts being a war games rip off. Anyways they couldve done that even call it a gang wars match. 4 vs 4 vs 4 Los Boricuas vs DOA vs Nation vs Truth commission. The difference being that unlike war games where 1st team to get a pin or submission & no falls until all guys are in they couldve done a last man/team standing & falls count rt from the beginning that way the rings don't get too full. Basically a war games & elimination chamber hybrid start of with 4 guys 1 from each team then interval entrances with eliminations here & there of the weaker guys like truth commission except Kerrigan & los boricuas except savio & they could even have only crush survive for DOA Have team up vs the nation since none of them got eliminated then they each imitate 1 memember leaving the 4 leaders til the end

I think WWF 1997 in and of itself would be a really interesting case study. If you watch a show from the beginning of that year, it’s unrecognizable as compared to a show from Dec ‘97. So much changed from both a presentation & talent perspective

Seeing the small little clip of the Oddities debut (with the Howard Stern people) reminds me of how, for a crappy gimmick and stable, the Oddities were big time over with the crowd. It makes me interested and excited for the possibility of a Wrestling Bios video on the Oddities.

How about a Nation vs DX ‘98 vid?
I have memories of an episode of Raw, watching it in my friends house inwhich, somebody in the audience seemed to be defiantly and proudly holding a sign over his head that read "Kurgan is my Father". I cant remember when it was exactly, other than I laughed and laughed at it! I loved this video. Brilliantly looking back at a somewhat forgotten series of events and fueds. I enjoyed the Gang Wars at the time, and so much good stuff came from it, be it the Rocks ascent, or anything really to do with Hart Foundation and DX. All that stuff was Gold!
