Having seen the movie twice now, I feel the casting was perfect from both an acting and singing standpoint. I can see why there is Oscar buzz for Ariana and Cynthia. And Bailey was so electric and charming. I never knew he could dance like that. Plus they all sang live too?!?! Incredible.

I still wonder about gaga only because even under other directors, I never heard that. But I wouldn't be shocked. There IS footage of Jessie J sing some Elphaba somewhere on the web and honestly? It SLAYED. She has the voice type and pop edge tone I prefer hearing in that role. I'd have given a lot to see Amy Adams as Glinda...if this film were done earlier. She reads too old for it now, but I'd have cast her in a heart beat in her Giselle era. I really do think this is a great cast all around, which is half the battle. Even the supporting cast understands their assignments, I cannot wait to see Bowen Yang's natural theatricality in this, I've already had great laughs from what I've seen

Having not seen it yet, I am surprised that Jonathan Bailey beat Nick Jonas, given Nick's experience on stage. I have heard that there were not a lot of chemistry reads, so that tends me to believe that they were casting around Cynthia and perhaps saw Jonathan as a better love interest age wise compared to Nick.
I think you bring up a plausible casting scenario. In my opinion though, I'm sure Jonathan will nail it when the serious moments in the film occur (I haven't seen the stage musical or read the book). He has musical theater experience as well, and the second season of Bridgerton was his season to shine.
Nick can't act his way out of a paper bag, let alone in a musical. Yes I know he's done them but, but Bailey has a larger resume and understands musical theatre style acting better than any of the Jonas's. Luckily Bailey has Bridgerton fame behind him so he's current, people know who he is from that. But that's just the cherry on top of his already legitimate musical theatre chops, so it's the best of both worlds if the powers that be insisted on casting based on both skill set chops but are well known from something else.
Amanda Seyfried being in Mamma Mia and Les Mis, both huge universal musicals, as leading roles. Wicked would have been overexposure. She’s had her musical moment.

You should check out Dove's lovely performance at the Kennedy Center Honors where she sang Light In The Piazza from the stage musical of the same name. She was there to honor opera singer Renee Fleming--they played mother and daughter in the musical.
Ari is doing so AMAZINGLY in Wicked, I'm not gonna say anything negative about these actresses who have auditioned, I think they're very talented however Ari is PERFECT for this role!
One thing that kinda annoys me is how so many Ariana fans see how amazing she’s doing in wicked and they immediately jump to tearing down actresses who also auditioned, insisting that they couldn't do better. It’s so degrading 🙄 EDIT for those who have a hard time with reading comprehension: I'm talking about the fans who make fun of Taylor, dove, Amanda, etc. the fans who mock them online and use Ariana's Glinda to say things like "dove Cameron could never." just because someone says they would've preferred any of these other women in the role doesn't mean they're hating on Ariana but it truly seems like her SOME of her fans are using this role to hate on other actresses

I mean…Jonathan Bailey has an Olivier, so definitely has theatre experience and has won awards for it!

It has just been announced that Ryan McCartan will be taking over as Jay Gatsby on Broadway in January. He was also amazing in Wicked on Broadway.
