  • I'm not sure why... but a while back I attempted to walk 100,000 steps in a single day. That's more than the length of a marathon and I mostly did it indoors... here is the story of what this challenge did to my body.

I watched your video with my son two days ago. Unprompted, my 11 year old son decided he wanted to take 50k steps in a day. Yesterday he set his alarm for 6:45a and started walking by 7:00a. He walked the dog, he walked around the yard, he took the dog on several long walks, he walked on the treadmill. After 13 hours he broke 50k. He ate half a burrito, took a bath and has been sleeping ever since. He’s an amazing kid. Thanks for the inspirational video.

This is the fine line. He was smart enough to know that this was a fool’s errand, he was smart enough to have stuff prepared, and smart enough to estimate what amount of steps he’d need to take in order to get that goal. But he was dumb enough to go through with it, despite all the obstacles he KNEW would be there, and how difficult it would be. That could be perceived as stupid, I suppose, but I’d argue it’s being committed to the bit. While objectively, it is stupid, subjectively? That’s stupid in his eyes. Just don’t be stupid yourself, and try to attempt this. Not without a couple months, maybe even a year of training, the proper equipment, and medical supplies, and know when you need to tap out.

You'd be amazed how much stuff adds up.
The average person walks 10,000 steps in a day. That's only 10 days to get to 100,000.
Even if you cut that in half and only walked 5,000 in a day, that would still only take 20 days, say 3 weeks to do that.
I remember walking from my college back home (whenever my bike had a flat tire) and that was 8 miles, took about 3 hours and we'd usually grab lunch midway.
It's totally possible to do, just not in one day.

Not to say Mark isn’t fit, but walking very long distances, especially when we are getting into marathon lengths, requires specific training and preparation, that most people start months in advance.
Mark didn’t prepare, he went from spending most of his time sitting at a desk, walking more than a marathon, which his body just want ready for.
But I agree that it isn’t dumb to try it, just dumb to try it without training for it.

Even with good shoes your feet will hurt. 3. COMEPRESION SOCKS. Your feet will swell, and make it hurt more! Elevate your feet when youre done! 4. Water! You'll need it!

"What's funny is, the body has methods of convincing you that you are stupider than you try to become. And when you do something stupid enough, your body decides that it's time for the stupid to go away, and it shuts you down, mid-stupid."
I hadn't experienced this phenomena until recently, when I as a person with mild lactose intolerance (so mild I often didn't experience any symptoms) made the horrendous decision to drink a large glass of chocolate milk. My body could not process the milk, so a lot of it just sat in my gut, curdled, and absolutely destroyed my gut bacteria and intestinal lining. Pain and vomiting kept me awake for days, and I'm still not able to digest a meal without feeling discomfort, even a week later.
Mark is absolutely right. Your body will shut you down, mid-stupid. When the brain doesn't fully realize or accept that what you are doing is detrimental to your health, your body will say "Nope" and take over. Be good to yourself everyone.
