  • In this video, I'm unboxing and going over some basic specs of the Ariel Rider Grizzly v2. This bike is considerably more powerful than the Brompton Electric, which was the reason I was intrigued and decided to check it out for myself. It was a lot of fun!

    My Grizzly arrived with a defective rear motor. It made a terribe noise the first few days then stopped working altogether. Emailed customer support and they refusing to repair / replace it! Buyer beware.

      I am in the same boat.
      I got and error code 30H and have been exchanging emails with Ariel Rider for over a month now.
      The only thing they have determined is that the Wicked Thumb headlight I installed has voided my warranty.
      So, I paid, $3,500 for a bike I rode for 3 months, and when we figure out what is wrong with my bike I will be paying for the parts.
      From the comments I have seen, many Grizzly owners are stating that multiple parts need to be replaced at the same time, with mixed results for success or failure.
      For example, some owners state they replaced the controllers, harness, and display without success.
      Some owners say they had to replace the controllers, display, and motor all at the same time to get it working again.
      This is a catastrophic failure of multiple components at the same time. This means one component is causing the others to fail and there is no recognizable pattern. There are many combinations and permutations of multiple component failures.
      This helps explain why I have not been told what is wrong with my bike after exchanging emails for over a month.
      Ariel Rider has a video showing how to replace the controllers of the Grizzly, as of 07-14-2022 the video has 1.8k views. 1,800 views on how to replace the controllers, WTF!
      I will never buy an e-bike online again.

    Fun bike I have one too. it's better to not start with both motors from 0mph, as you see you just spin out the front tire and will wear it down. It's better to kick in the front motor when already moving (as a speed boost), or when already starting up a hill. It wont spin out the tire since you're already moving but it gives you the benefit and torque of a second motor.

      Kind of a design flaw tbh, a lot of very power electric bikes have controller that allow you to gentle start even if you full throttle. Also with bicycles, it's kind of moot to put two motors, just get a motor that is double the power and rear wheel drive, it will be lighter and more efficient.

    • @1t_wasnt_me
      @1t_wasnt_me ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Daivd1111 No it won't, it'll be a lot heavier, it will stress the frame to the max and beyond and will drain the battery far faster than this outfit does.

      @@1t_wasnt_me Can I ask what support you saying that?
      Two motors double the casing, wiring, controler, are they lighter in you mind?
      No bike frame can not handle a 3kw motor if installed correctly.
      If single motor design drain battery faster, why all 4 wheel drive EV have less range than 2 wheel drive version.
      Saying something different dont make it true

    • @davidanderson9074
      @davidanderson9074 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another option is to have the pedal drive in a low gear, and the assist on, even at 5 the power comes on slower with the pedal assist. then with the hand throttle. I use both methods at different times.

    • @jeffspicoli2742
      @jeffspicoli2742 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Daivd1111 I have a bike with two motors and the throttle has three levels based on how far you pull it. So you can start throttling light enough so the front tire doesn't spin out. Then at about 5 mph you can use full throttle.

      I did the same thing for a long time but finally pulled the trigger about a year ago. I realized because it's a new-ish market there are new manufacturers and models constantly so might as well just find the best one i can afford and order so I can start riding. Although, i ended up getting a scooter because at the time i was looking the only way to get an ebike that went 35-40mph was to spend $4k+ but i was able to get a scooter that went nearly 50mph with a massive battery for range for half that price.
      Anyways, my advice is just get one otherwise you'll be waiting forever because there's always going to be another new model coming soon..

      Electric motors like to turn at a certain speed and with hub motors this equates to a fixed road speed. The presence of the second motor might be enough to get into the 'sweet spot' and get near-optimal efficiency from the engine whereas the single motor might only be working at reduced efficiency due to low speed. That's my theory anyway!

    • @BartekJuszczak
      @BartekJuszczak ปีที่แล้ว

      @@The1trueDave Also since one motor is enough to go up the hill even if at 1mph, that means that the second motor doesn't have to deal with the hill at all, so if one motor gets him 0.0001mph up a hill, that means that the second motor should be able to get up to flat ground single motor speeds.

    One thing for safety of anyone riding an ebike over 20mph on regular streets. When a vehicle is coming out of a laneway making turn on a red light. When their brain sees a two wheel vehicle. They assume a speed is being done is a pedal bicycle top speed. Not 35moh etc... i ride recumbents so i speak from opposite side of coin. Cars give me so much extra space. So until fast little motor cycle speed bikes become the norm i would say keep limit at 20mph and don't assume that cars coming out of lanes/ driveways e.t.c have clocked your speed. BTW some of the owners of those bikes have tweaked them to 70mph and higher.

BTW going full power at slow speed like you did up that hill will burn out the motor windings, it's best to gain speed to start a hill and peddle. I know you did it for the review, but I'm just saving someone from the "dead ebike" nightmare. Those suck pushing/peddling home if you're a mile or more away. I beat my ebikes up and over power them. The problem is people get bikes like this and they're not responsible enough or have the experience to ride it which cause accidents or crashes.

    I ride an ebike that's basically considered to be a New York city delivery ebike. It's called an Arrow 10. They're really exclusive to the city I live in, like you can't even google them. I've been drooling over the Grizzly ever since it released last year, but my biggest issue is part replacement. Since I own an ebike that the city is very familiar with, getting the necessary odd repairs is super affordable and simple. I pay 15 bucks every few months to get my break pads replaced, and every so often I'll replace a disc or even a wheel (the potholes here are insane). If I got this Grizzly, I'd have to order the parts and wait for the mail, and probably pay a lot more to boot.
    I like this bike a lot, and if I lived anywhere else, I'd have it, but sometimes you have to consider your environment. A bike like the Grizzly stands out from the one I have, and it'll for sure be the target of bike thieves, which are everywhere in NYC. I've actually seen a few Grizzly's out in the wild chained to poles, and I get anxiety for their owners just noticing how shiny and fresh they look.. I wouldn't be able to own a nice bike like this one in peace living where I live. My bike is actually pretty nice itself, but I have to grime it up so people don't mess with it.

      Bob,
      I am 6'2" and weigh 235 lbs.
      The front-end bottoms out on the fender, so I had to remove the fender.
      The rear shock does not have much travel, so I bottom out going over small bumps and dips in the road. I have cranked on the preload, and it makes it so stiff it is like having no suspension at all, and I still bottom out.
      My bike failed after the first 3 months. I got an Error Code 30H. This is a communication error.
      The 30H communication error can be anything from a loose connector to multiple part failure.
      After a month of exchanging emails with Ariel Rider, I still don't know what is wrong with my bike, and they have recommended I take it to a bike shop that sells and services Ariel Rider bikes. I live in San Diego, and there is a dealer in Oceanside.
      However, to answer your question, after being told to look for a loose connection, I am not going to be taking my Grizzly off-road or doing any mountain biking as this could cause a connector to come loose.
      I also have a Juiced HyperScorpion that goes about 32 mph in Race Mode. I have taken this bike off-road in the canyons. I don't go anywhere near 32 mph off-road, as it would be too dangerous for the most part.
      If you are looking to go off-road, I suggest you get a bike built for that purpose. And keep in mind that going 35 mph on a Grizzly on mountain bike trails could be dangerous. I was riding 10-15 mph with my Scorpion off-road.
      Lastly, I totally regret buying my Grizzly. For the $3,500 I paid, I could have gotten a 150cc scooter that goes 60 mph, gets over 100 miles per tank, and refueling takes less than 10 minutes vs 5 hours to recharge the batteries on the Grizzly.

    Better off with a mid drive, you could get up that hill easily using around 400w because the motor drives through the chain and rear cassette gears meaning you can reduce the stress on the motor by changing to low gear meaning better hill climbing abilities, less voltage usage and longer battery life.

    • @ManiacInTheShed
      @ManiacInTheShed ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @notfiveo Ive got a specialized hard tail I converted to mid drive aswell, 750w bafang like yours but i put a 32T chainring on mine because I live in a place with ridiculous steep hills and with that small chainring no hill is a problem, I can still reach 30mph on the flat with that chainring. I had a issues with the motor working itself loose aswell! I made a bracket that goes around the motor and bolts to the frame and it doesn't come loose now.

    • @Zomby_Woof
      @Zomby_Woof ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Its going to take as much wattage as is required to move the mass a certain distance.
      By using the gearing, and less wattage, you are necessarily moving slower.
      Using the gearing expands the range over which the motor works efficiently, which means you have the option of running a lower final ratio.
      But no, you are not going to go faster, using less power.
      Other than a need for a lower ratio, such as off road on slow steep terrain, there is not much advantage to the gearing, because unlike a gas engine where all the torque is on the lower end and the power is on the top end, an electric motor has a much flatter power curve.
      There are pluses and minuses to mid drive and hub motors.
      A hub motor is less maintenance, as you aren't pitting extra force on the chain and gearing.
      And if you are crappy at aligning your derailleur, you should avoid a mid drive.
      Mid drives give you the option of running different tires for different conditions a lot more easily.
      And you can get hub Motors in much higher wattages - there is a practical limit to how much power you can transmit through a mid drive anyway, before the drive train starts to suffer abnormal wear and failure.

    • @ManiacInTheShed
      @ManiacInTheShed ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Zomby_Woof Mid drive is better for me where I ride up mountains, I've tried rear hub motors and the mid drive out performs the hub motors greatly because I can lower gear ratio and also because the weight of the motor is in the middle unlike the rear hub drive with all the weight on the back wheel, if I was only using a bike on the road with not much steep hills then I would maybe get a hub motor, but what is the point when I can get a mid drive that can climb steep rocky mountains with ease! Hub motors suck compared to mid drive.

      I also like to mention on these custom dual e bikes, I do see the max torque power, using both batteries, but it is maximizing the watt output at high velocity , no matter how high the battery specs are it is juicing up a lot of E Juice faster then normal makes of E bikes. I've studied all the dual makes of E bikes of DIY to custom factory made and come to conclusion. I do not see most as practical of DIY makes for you have to do the math right of just the motor types alone while figuring out the max weight , the connection of wires , ECT. Like many I wanted to build a Dual myself but realized the actual need to upgrade is best off 1 motor of multiple makes over trying to do an All in One E bike. My 1500 and my 2000watt DD e bikes will not beat the duals off the start but my e bikes will catch up for a bit until the dual switch is turned on. With Hills I know my 1 motor e bikes kick ass going over 30 all the way unless hill is over 1 mile. These Dual Bikes are AWESOME but it is meant more for those who want a high grade PRICED range and appeal. I have 3 e bikes. 2 DD motor and 1 Geared motor. I would like someone to give me email to Aireal Bikes so I can give a detail formula of the preferred make of a Dual to compliment the true Dual E Bike as I heard they give away to test but those guys already got like 10 in their garage so they jus collecting over giving right opinion to be able to correct as being Practical.

    TBH I was expecting to see better from 3KW. Why? Well my bike has a Bafaang 750w rear hub motor. It manages a real 27mph on the flat, pulling a displayed 1200W. So I thought with 3000 W you might get to 45mph or so. I guess a little extra speed requires a lot more power. .. I say ‘real’ 27mph because it is clear many e-bikes give false speed readings due to incorrect tyre size. I checked my bike odo against both our cars and found it over reading by 5%. The bike computer says 29” wheels, but measuring from the ground upto the axle reveals it is an inch less, and sitting on the bike squashes it a bit even more! This makes a difference to the computer speedo calculation…mine is now accurate. Worse tho’…some not very ‘switched on’ You Tubers show the speedo set to Km/hr and are over the moon with their 1000w bikes doing like 45. I guess it would burst their bubble to tell them that’s only 30mph and with correct tyre size calculations it will be even lower!

    I've got an improvement 3 motor one on the peddling sprocket center hub.
    Can't you start with the back wheel and change after your up to speed so the frt wheel dont spin and wear down the rubber, also a automatic power assist when the back motor boggs down the frt wheel kicks in to help matain speed

    It's simply an electric moped not an e-bike. These exist for a long time but are a different category. Of course they have their use case but shouldn't considered as bike.
    Edit: The "Moped" wikipedia article is really detailed, worth a look if you want to know the differences.

    Agreed with others here. This is a motorcycle disguised as a bicycle. I suspect that we are reaching the point where laws are going to get changed.

    • @bulletproof4716

      This is closer to a moped than a light motorcycle. Also if people ride responsibly no laws would change

      @@bulletproof4716 I don't totally disagree, but, and it is a big but, people are starting to ride these on greenways where motorized vehicles are not allowed, and they are becoming more and more obvious as to what they are. It is only a matter of time until some careless idiot crashes one into a pedestrian or cyclist and changes everything.

    Nice. I had a foldable smallerwheeled bike years ago. I found it too twitchy. How is griz stability, can you relax or are you always on guard about twitches?
    Is the spinning front shell unavoidable? I would find that expensive.

    Kind of a dumb video title to be honest. This has nothing to do with Brompton. This is massive, and not even really a bike. “This isn’t good for pedaling… pedaling”…. Ok? That’s kind of the point. You’re comparing a big, heavy, motorcycle to a small, light, folding bicycle. Check the comments, you really missed the vibe with this one.
