One particular story (which ran for one issue) was when Tony Stark and Steve Rogers meet at the abandoned Avengers Mansion to try to work out their differences after Golaith was killed by "Clor" (clone of Thor). It's a very poignant and sad read while both try to find common ground to build a resolution. The end frame of the classic Iron Man and Captain Avenger standing together in a faded background while both men walk away after failing to work things out was a powerful image.
I feel like Demon in the Bottle is given perhaps a bit too much focus. In a lot of ways, it started the ball rolling on Stark's alcoholism but it wasn't until the Stane saga that we actually got the full weight of that story and how far it would go. Demon in the bottle is often considered the go-to example of his alcoholism but it doesn't even hold a candle to the Stane saga.
Brian Michael Bendis's current run of the Invincible Iron Man is one that should be read as well. It's a easy one for newbies since it just started up.
I agree with Demon in a Bottle being No. 1, but wasn't Deliverance part of the Obediah Stane/Iron Monger story? Also, thanks for reminding me how good the Fraction/LaRocca run on Iron Man was. Outside of Michilinie/Layton, et. al, it's probably my favorite Iron Man run. Other Iron Man stories I would include are the attempted takeover of Stark International by a SHIELD sleeper cell (Iron Man 216-219); Iron Man's first confrontation with Justin Hammer in Monaco after Hammer takes control of Iron Man's armor to kill a diplomat; The Five Nightmares, introducing Obediah Stane's son; and the Blood Brothers/Controller story from Iron Man 89-92, which, at least for me, was when Iron Man started to become formidable as opposed to a guy who perpetually had his armor melted or desperately had to find a power outlet to save his life (usually for pages at a time).
Glad you got some Len Kaminski goodness in there in the honorable mentions. He brought us both War Machine and the Hulkbuster and his run was just very fun overall with a good understanding of the character.

So much fun in the issues leading up to :Demon!' Just grab anything with Bob Layton. Along with his SHIELD conflict, he fights Namor, and Justin Hammer hacks his armor in phases. Tony and Rhodey come after Hammer as Iron Man is investigated for murdering the Carneliisn ambassador. It was my favorite arc as a kid foraging the back issues bins!

The SureFire Gamer It had a few bad elements but it's still a great comic that showed how Tony dealt with being in charge of shield as well as feeling as though he had to sacrifice his morals and ideals in order to keep the world safe. Along with The Confession it was a good story to show why Iron Man was doing seemingly evil things because from his viewpoint it was either get in line with the US Government and the SHRA or sit back while his friends go to war with an entire country.
soberchimera61 Zeke Stane is an underappreciated villain in the MCU plus given that in the MCU Tony is directly responsible for the death of Obidiah rather then him killing himself it's more personal for Stane. Other villains want to kill Tony but Zeke wants to make him obsolete.
I would add Iron Man: Crash by Mike Saenz to this list. It's Iron Man's very own Dark Knight Returns, a hero in the twilight of his career and his rebirth as a new hero....

Mario Ramunno Well the first issues of Iron Man in Tales of Suspense #39-99 written by Stan Lee/Don Heck/Steve Ditko/Gene Colan are a great way to start knowing who is Tony Stark/Iron Man,also we get to know the enemy's like The Mandarin,Whiplash,Unicorn,Ultimo or some of his friends like Pepper Potts,Happy Hoggan,Morgan Stark,etc. The Kaminski/Hopgood Run from Iron Man V1 #278-318 that explains more about Tony's relation with his dad and how he started to get addicted to alcohol. The Busiek/Chen Run started in Iron Man V3 #1-25 one of the best IM story out there,with the "return" of Tony Stark after the ugly "Heroes Reborn" era. And lastly The Knauf's/Zircher run after the great "Extremis" run of Warren Ellis,this all happen in Iron Man V4 #7-28. Hope this helps you.
i dont know, i mean i started reading Tales of Suspense since it was the very first issues with Iron Man but as I got far from Iron Man Vol 1, I realized those were not really worth reading. Since, they retconned, changed some of its history in latter volumes anyway. For example, the reason behind the pitting of Iron Man vs. Mandarin was because of Capitalism vs Communism which is so out of fashion today imo. Even Stan Lee said he regretted some of Iron Man's history including the influence from Cold War. I think you should just go straight and read volume 1... skip volume 2 and read volume 3.

The reason why Iron Man even encountered Mandarin was because of the hysteria from communists, who were afraid of the Mandarin, fearing that he might take over China and destroy communism. Americans heard that, so they sent Iron Man to figure out if the Mandarin is actually that dangerous. Mandarin was the opponent of communism. And no, the Tales of Suspense continuity wasn't retconned until recently. When you go back to Kurt Busiek's run, you can can clearly see flashbacks to the events that happened during Tales of Suspense era of Shell-Head.

That comic is a complete garbage. It ruined Iron Man's character more than One More Day ruined Spider-Man. No wonder that it had no conclusion.

well Superior Iron Man's storyline has a downer ending, the Endo-Sym Armor is awesome though. No wonder it got into DEATH BATTLE! vs. Lex Luthor
Movies are nothing but a childish garbage in comparison to the complexity and profoundity of some of the Iron Man's comics. Not to mention, comic book versions of Iron Man's villains were much better and sophisticated than the shitty villains from movies.
