I'm only 24 and I feel the same way about the Canucks. I'm cautious. You know why? Because I care about the Canucks. I care, and I don't want to let myself get excited only to be let down again. That's an emotional response. I'd say it's akin to a trauma response in a way. I am deeply emotionally invested in the Canucks. That's what makes me a fan and it's what makes you a fan. I never understand the whole "you can't be a fan of this team if they annoy or frustrate you and you don't worry about how things are going" argument. To me the a big part of the appeal of sports fandom is that you get this shared experience of suffering and worry and frustration with an entire fan base, and then when your team breaks through (whatever breaking through looks like in their context) it's genuinely electrifying. Or at least that's how I justify being a Ranger fan since I got Blades of Steel as one of my first three NES games in 1991 and "New Jersey" wasn't there but "New York" was so I decided I was a Ranger fan...hey, I was 6, it made as much sense as anything else.

Hey Shannon I understand how you feel, my dad is around your age and when he talks about the canucks he always says “they’ll find a way to fuck it up”. The years of heartbreak takes a toll. He gave up watching hockey after 2011, and only got back recently. Big Habs fan too. It’s too bad but that feeling runs deep with older fans. A lot of younger fans like me don’t really get it
Also I feel like it’s a lot easier to be critical towards your own team cause you tend to watch them more (maybe not in your case) easier to give the other team the benefit of the doubt. You love the Canucks so much so you hold them to the highest standards
    Thanks for being awesome

Brother, I do the same shit with the Rangers, and the same shit gets said to me. But you know what, over half the time, I’m right, and a lot of that has to do with the fact that I watch multiple teams regularly, mainly two, ironically the Canucks being the other one, so I have a much more objective outlook than I otherwise would. That way i see each team in the league roughly twice as much as I normally would if I was only a rangers fan, and I get more of a sense of what’s going on. I also just have the tendency to focus on what the team I’m cheering for needs to work on, and not if they get a bad call against, or if there was an unfortunate bounce. Then I get called a bad fan for that. For example, say trouba throws a questionable hit, and say he does undoubtedly cross the line upon further look’s, I’m the first guy to call that out because i hate that kind of play. In my point of view, and this only really happened when I picked up the canucks as a second team, and I do the same thing for them as well, is that blindly cheering for everything your favorite team does, and thinking your favorite team can do no wrong, is an ignorant way of watching the sport and it’ll get you into more nonsensical arguments than it’s worth. Spend two minutes looking in the hockey chat discord and you’ll see my point.

Ive been a Canucks fan my entire life (19 years). I know that isnt a very long time, but my dad, has been around since they came into the League. And from all the things Ive witnessed and all the shit Ive heard, I get why Shannon is cautious. I am too. I get why he didnt put us #1 in power rankings either. We havent been playing our best hockey the last few games, were slow coming out in the first which results in us being down a goal early. Yeah we get that goal back at some point, but if we want the Canucks to be #1 in power rankings, they have to play like it. They gotta play the full 60 minutes.
Edit: I get why youre waiting for everything to go bad again. Its classic Canucks hockey where we start to do good, and then it goes bad. Happened to us too many times. And who knows, they could be #1 in the power rankings that get posted later today, we wont know until the video is out. The Canucks were at 5 last week, I can see us moving up to a maximum of #2, I still dont think we're playing #1 hockey for power rankings, but I dont know what all Shannon puts into the way he makes his power rankings, we could be #1 but like I said, we wont know until later tonight.

Unfortunately, there are too many haters and trolls on social media these days. They're desperate for attention and know they'll get it by acting out, and it works. I agree that if you don't like something, you stay away from it, not run towards it. There's a few haters/trolls that are on every video possible of the Leafs, who I follow the most, and 1 troll in specific that is usually very early to comment the same stupid things everytime. The big difference is this 1 has a put 7 burner accounts to comment on the comment they originally left but with a different account. This person will literally have a conversation with themself using different accounts. Some just love and need that attention no matter where it comes from. I do believe you're biased in some regards, I don't believe that you're not a Cunucks fan. PPS. That other Canucks fan needs a bug-ectomy😱
PPPS. I've been a Ranger fan all my life (60+ years). But there were plenty of years where they were stinkers. There were plenty of years where they were good but self destructed in the playoffs. I never pulled punches with them. You've heard my disappointment with them when warranted.
PPPPS. I've been an unbiased fan myself. Listening to you has only made me even more unbiased. 👍

Long time watcher, first time commenter… Just wanted to say that I love your videos and I hope these trolls don’t get you down too much. It’s clear how much effort you put into providing an unbiased look at the league and I think you do a fantastic job.
Also, the fact that some of them say you’re not a fan because you’re MORE critical of your favorite team is silly IMO. Even if you are a little harder on the Canucks, it’s obviously because you’re just way more invested in their success. Anyways, keep it up and know there’s plenty of us out here that appreciate what you do!

I think you are doing a great job. Sure there are some fans who think their team is the best when things are going good, or the worst if things are going bad. But that isn`t what this show is. These fans just tune in to hear you praise their team. They probably don`t even listen to the rest of the video. You don`t make this show for them. This show is an opinion based report on the league based on stats and trends. You do an awesome job, keep your head up and stick on the ice my guy!

Sounds like these twitter guys want you to be like the Toronto TH-cam channels that only cover the Leafs and only think Leaf players are good and claim they watch other teams but they don't know anything going on outside of Leafs Nation. It's understandable to want your team to be #1 but if they don't like your rakings they can do their own. Or just don't watch. This is the only channel where I actually believe the TH-camr watches the games. So many hockey channels have guys that go off on what's wrong with a team or what they need but if you listen to them you can tell they haven't watched games and are only looking at stats.

The Caps fan base is very similar. I have been a Caps fan since 1974. So my heart has been broken many times as well. But, if I dare to point out that they are the second oldest team in the league (thankfully they have been calling up younger players recently) or mention that the power play is awful on the fan forums, I get called a fake Caps fan.

The problem in the first place are people who have black and white definitions about anything. Being a fan doesn't mean that you can't be practical or realistic about it. You can still support the team and want them to do well but have expectations that they won't win the cup in any given year. It should be common sense but those people just won't get it. You're a fan of the sport, THG and any reasonable person can see that. Keep up the great work!

I don’t have any issues with your coverage. The only thing I question is why as Canucks fans do many of us feel the need to cheer cautiously? We’re allowed to cheer and be happy if they are doing well. We can do it immediately too. There’s no need to wait and see. I don’t get this mentality. We understand there’s been disappointment in the past but that should not stop us from being happy for a short period of success. They should not have to prove their worth to us. Are we so afraid of a potential disappointment that we can’t cheer for them ? Isn’t that part of the roller coaster of sports fandom ? The hockey guy coverage is acceptable but I question all of us Canucks fans who feel the need to wait and see before being happy about new success. Yes it may go bad. But that can happen at any time. Even after your artificial wait and see time period has passed. I say let’s just enjoy the ride. Don’t be afraid to cheer or to be happy or get your hopes up based on team success. That’s when it’s fun. When the hopes are up. Cheers fellow Canucks fans.

Many years ago, I met a Canadian guy who could not stand the Canucks, which sort of surprised me. I would understand disliking successful teams like Montreal or overexposed teams, like Toronto. But I didnt understand hating the Canucks as they have never won anything.
I'd always felt kinship with Canucks fans, as like my team, they had never won. After my team won, I was hoping long-suffering Vancouver fans could experience that joy.
But a few years back, I encountered some Canuck fans during a playoff series and I really could not believe the level of arrogance. It put me off the Canucks completely.

Very simple Shannon, you're a professional. We all have biases, but as a professional, you give credit where it's due and criticism when it's warranted. If you show preference or favoritism to the Canucks, you'll lose all credibility to hockey fans. The truth hurts but it'll also set you free.

If you don't have unbridled non-stop optimism towards your team, and downgrade every effort of the opposition as pure luck and not skill, you're not a fan.
An other kind of fan is the typical "everything's bad and I will never see them win anything". Both are so tiring.
The loudest people online are those who see things as either pitchblack or angelic white. Personally, the ones I respect the most are the ones who actually have a gray-scale of emotions and analyzes, with your own team, the opposition and the league as a whole. You're one of those. Never change.

People who are all in on a team, right or wrong, are exhausting. The wild swings from love to hate in 15 minutes during a game makes me just not watch any stuff. You're the only hockey content I watch unless there's a GM press conference for the Flyers. I don't care what idiot reporters ask tired hockey players in the locker room. And I absolutely don't care about random people screaming about everything.
