The Mr. McMahon character kind of started in the USWA in the 90s. They had a working relationship and they had him feud with Jerry Lawler. Early as 93 I believe.
I hated Hogan for running to Vince to tell on Jesse Ventura when he tried to start a union for wrestlers that had no proper medical plan for when they got hurt
Amen Shannon. I loved this . I feel we could sit and talk wrestling and hockey all day every day. Lol. Thank you for making me smile and talking my passions.
At its best, pro wrestling is about storytelling. I grew up with Stampede Wrestling and the Harts. Some of my favourite matches include Bret because those matches were all about telling a story in the ring. You can do all the fancy moves you want and take risks with your body, but if it doesn't mean anything from a storytelling perspective, you're just a crash test dummy.
I had a buddy give me that ever old line and I was like, "you collect hot wheels and take pictures of them in action shots for your fig photography and you're going to talk to me about reality? I get it, I've met your family, but still". Never a word after that.
There is a podcast called, Behind the Bastards, that has a 6 part (several hour) deep dive into the origins of professional wrestling and ascension of Vince McMahon (along with many scandals) that you should really give a listen! It talks about his childhood!
I’ll tell you what Vince was thinking as far as the bodybuilding thing was going he loves bodybuilding so he was of the opinion that everybody else loved bodybuilding McMahon legitimately thought there were millions of other people like him that would tune into that every week
This series was pretty much for non-wrestling fans. It was for the Netflix audience. If you're a wrestling fan, you didn't really learn anything new about Vince.
masters failed a steroid test and was suspended for 2 months. then triple h of all people said in an aired promo "how's the new weight plan? what's it called how to lose 50 lbs. in 60 days?" that was it for masters.
Vince is just another example of what happens when you attain enough power/wealth to surround yourself with sycophants. The ridiculous becomes reasonable.
With the road schedule of the 80s, many guys had a less is more philosophy. Hogan had crazy longevity in his career but still wrecked his body doing the limited moveset that he did. As people have said, he usually brought his A game in Japan. The fans would've booed him out of the building if he did his usual hokey American theatrics. They snickered at Ultimate Warrior's act when the WWF did a tour there. Hogan knew how to work an audience and change his act up when he needed to.
My non wrestling fan friend watching the documentary: Wow this Vince guy did some real shady stuff. Me watching it, a wrestling fan: Wow I can't believe they didn't talk about all the other shady stuff Vince did. Non Wrestling friend: Huh? Me: Oh he's done way worse than what they talked about.
Somebody’s who seen it can confirm for me, but when Hulk went to Japan in 93’ wasn’t he doing more promos and was showing a bit more technical in his matches?
The series was more a WWE biography as opposed to a McMahon documentary. Also, given all that happened, we were expecting a "dark side of the ring" but just got a promo. Also, interesting how little they talked about the last 15-16 years of the PG era where they sort of killed all the intrigue about product to keep it PG. It was only when Vince resigned and HHH took over that the product started picking up again. Anyways, outside of a few inappropriate comments we didn't get much insight into McMahon
I thought the documentary series was kind of dull. If you know nothing about wwe or Vince McMahon you'll get something out of this but if you are familiar with the history of WWE/WWF you won't get much out of this. Lots of people built this up that this was a series that was going to go deep and ask Vince the hard questions but it's really not. Lots of things are just glossed over.
Did you ever watch Maven Huffman's channel? Some really interesting stuff there. I remembered I hated him as a wrestler but he seems like such a nice dude.
Who better than Kanyon?! You're the first person I've ever heard say you were a fan of his. Man, I loved Kanyon for the exact same reasons! He always pulled out new moves I hadn't seen before and no one else could do. He was the innovator of offence. I was sad to find out he had such bad mental health issues.
When you look back at some of the storylines Vince was involved in.............especially with the Women......there's a clear clue the guy was a mad man and kinda twisted. Then you look at the Storyline where he wanted to impregnate Stephanie .........the guy is messed up in the head.
I think it’s ironic Netflix did a “roast” of Vince McMahon while at the same time they sign a $5bn 10 year deal to show Raw, Smackdown and the “PLEs” in most of the world.
For me it was a lot of information that we already knew and didn't really highlight how horrible of a person he really was. Last 30 minutes of episode 6 was good though :)
Paul London was released from his WWE contract on November 7, 2008. So more than a year and half after the limo explosion. He probably got heat for smiling tho. Which is again, stupid in itself.
Anytime someone says "you know wrestling is fake right", I say it is scripted yes, but the stunts they perform is very real. Then I ask them, "Do you watch action movies?" and if they say yes, I say "You know that's fake right? But it is entertaining isn't it? The same reason you watch action movies, is the same reason I do. And it is the same reason I watch wrestling."
i like bill simmons, i take in a lot of the stuff he does at the ringer, but he doesn't know pro wrestling like he thinks he does. any wrestling tidbit he drops is ultimately wrong, and i don't mean he thought a bad match was good, he simply doesn't know the history.
Some great points here.. Hulk really was a pretty crappy wrestler BUT he was strong as hell. Slamming Andre a few times? No easy feat even if Andre jumps for you. I thought the special did a decent job humanizing Vince surprisingly. He's a total control freak and deviant, but man, what a work ethic and what vision. The things I didn't like was that there was zero mention of guys like Macho Man, honkey Tonk man, Brutus the Barber etc. It's as if these other huge names never existed and then you had the attitude era etc. I liked Stone Cold and the Rock but to be honest, nothing beat the 80's. maybe it was the difference between me in Grade 5 vs university, but a lot of the story lines were silly even if the boobs did drive up the ratings.
vkm did not have to "force" them to take roids. But he could and did refuse to push a guy to the top that was not roided up, fact. That awful honky tonk crap was to take advantage of heat he could get and when it died out, vkm had the ultimate warrior, steroids personified, beat him in seconds.
I'm 47 and for the longest time, way too much of a wrestling fan. I had to take a year off strictly because the online bitching of tribal AEW and WWE fans. How you can support the company and not the performer, I'll never know. ANYWAY, if you've followed WWE at all you KNOW McMahon has been up to some dark, dark stuff for a very long time and the few people he keeps in his circle are no better than him. And most in that company knew but couldn't say or lost their jobs. He is a trash bag of a human being and he'll probably never be held accountable, but here's hoping.
Also....a sick part of me really wants them to bring back "Skywalker" or "Scaffold" matches and find the safest way possible to do it.But there's no way that would fly.
Entertainment guy, those of us who grew up with Super Cena hated him as much as you hated Hogan. Cena has also done as much lying and cheating backstage as Hogan. At least with Hogan you got legendary matches. Cena had extremely mediocre rivalries with Orton, Batista, Edge, etc. Even Cena's feud with the Rock ruined years worth of manias. I never bought a WWE PPV again after Cena and Rock derailed WM 27.
“Shannon, this video doesn’t work for me brother”. - Hulk Hogan
You could take an idea from THG and do career retrospectives on certain wrestlers. :)
The Mr. McMahon character kind of started in the USWA in the 90s. They had a working relationship and they had him feud with Jerry Lawler. Early as 93 I believe.
Brian Zane (Wrestling With Wregret) had a great video about that too.
I hated Hogan for running to Vince to tell on Jesse Ventura when he tried to start a union for wrestlers that had no proper medical plan for when they got hurt
One of the biggest snake moves in wrestling history. Imagine if there had been a union. Sooo many guys would still be alive and well today.
@@blackhawks9763 absolutely!
Amen Shannon. I loved this . I feel we could sit and talk wrestling and hockey all day every day. Lol. Thank you for making me smile and talking my passions.
"you know pro wrestling is fake, right". YES, it's performance art and, at its best, it's freaking glorious. Peak entertainment.
It's still real to me DAMNIT!!
It's like saying "you know the Avengers are fake, right?".
I had a buddy give me that ever old line and I was like, "you collect hot wheels and take pictures of them in action shots for your fig photography and you're going to talk to me about reality? I get it, I've met your family, but still". Never a word after that.
Ita not fake its pre determined
If it was fake no one would get hurt

The only good thing to come out of the WBF was Lex Luger!
Says it all really.
and as juiced as he was, Vince was jacked into his 60's. Impressive.
This series was pretty much for non-wrestling fans. It was for the Netflix audience. If you're a wrestling fan, you didn't really learn anything new about Vince.

Vince is just another example of what happens when you attain enough power/wealth to surround yourself with sycophants. The ridiculous becomes reasonable.
add to it he's in the wrestling business.. the type of viper it takes to survive that den let alone rule it.
I saw Big John Stud wrestle Andre the Giant ringside in mid 80’s, what a memory
With the road schedule of the 80s, many guys had a less is more philosophy. Hogan had crazy longevity in his career but still wrecked his body doing the limited moveset that he did.

Yes that’s true
The doc is good, but as a wrestling fan, all of this stuff we already knew from before
Hogan could definitely wrestle better than his character. His stuff in Japan was pretty cool and it was fun seeing him doing enzuigiris

Please watch and review Bad Blood on Saturday

Yeah as a wrestling fan all I learned is that Shane is a really good guy
All the best wrestlers are from Canada
Iron Mike Sharpe.
You need to bottle whatever it is that you are on.
Honestly just felt like I was rewatching that mcmahon documentary from the 2000's. Didn't really learn anything I didn't know
That Jersey is wild.
You can't Achieve those physiques naturally.
3-4 years ago, I completely stopped watching WWE. I got tired of Vince's last minute changes. Now, I only watch during WrestleMania
Please continue to make more wrestling content
Surprisingly Hogans work in New Japan was pretty good 👍
Did you ever watch Maven Huffman's channel? Some really interesting stuff there. I remembered I hated him as a wrestler but he seems like such a nice dude.

Its not made for the hardcore wrestling fan, everything was already known
I wish Paul Heyman narrated the entire thing.. his spot in epidsode 5 was the coup de gras !
Just when I thought THG/TEG couldn't be a better guy I learn he doesn't like Hulk Hogan. Major W

I think they should do a season 2 after the investigation and the lawsuit have played out.
i like bill simmons, i take in a lot of the stuff he does at the ringer, but he doesn't know pro wrestling like he thinks he does. any wrestling tidbit he drops is ultimately wrong, and i don't mean he thought a bad match was good, he simply doesn't know the history.

Idk man i remember Big Show had an iron clad contract lol

Hogan was a better wrestler in Japan because he was able to.
Also, the 'best' wrestler is who draws the most money.
Always knew I liked you for a reason ofc you’re a member of the cult plz make more wrestling videos
Who better than kanyon? !
As a kid, I was a ginormous Hogan fan. Things have changed in the passed 15-20 years or so, now that I know what kind of person he really is.
Doesn’t work for me brother

And Hogan actually attempted submissions in Japan. Completely different wrestler. But I never liked him either.
AEW about to be saved by Shane McMahon. Two sons of Billionaires teaming up to change the wrestling world forever!
Japan Hogan > John Cena
I just watched the Chris Kanyon episode of Dark Side of the Ring!
Captain 20-20, I don't think you are properly representing what it was like as a fan in the 90s.
There isn't a single Hogan match I would rewatch. I have rewatched Cena matches.
Hogan's excuse, if you believe it, is that he messed up his knee beating the Iron Sheik in 1984 for the WWF Belt.
Is this your mom’s basement? She lets you buy all those jerseys?
Hogan is a typical Trumper me me me and no one can be better than me
