I would like to apologise for a very cheesy Thumbnail for this video but the idea of Affinity Designer and Procreate being the best of buds and with Valentine's approaching, I just couldn't help myself ;) So here you go!
Anyways, in this video, I am sharing my workflow of using both Procreate and Affinity Designer to create my maps and other illustrations. I am by no means an expert on any of the programs, I am just a user, who learns something new with each project and each commission. And then I'm sharing it on TH-cam for all of you to learn from my experience and to avoid painful and time-consuming mistakes!

Fantasy Cartography has been my passion for some time now. And I've created quite a few worlds by now. There's just something magical when you can open a Fantasy book and see a map of a completely new world. Book Maps should be a must thing for authors to implement. And I know some stories do not need a map, but when you see someone else's imagination come to life, and be a part of this creation, it's magical. Fantasy maps not only help you follow your character's journey but allow the readers to fully immerse themselves in the world created.
Let's not allow only DND and RPG players to enjoy the beautiful designs and many choices! Fantasy Maps and Map generators are not only for games, they're also a part of storytelling.
Writers, authors, and dungeon masters, all know the importance of a well-crafted Fantasy Map. And Fantasy Map artists and Fantasy Cartographers know how to elevate their work so it looks unique, and beautiful and represents the original thought of the creator.

you’re clearly a very intelligent woman as i work the same way with procreate and affinity products 🥰

I just installed affinity designer on my ipad so now I have procreate and designer

great video, I now have an ipad pro with procreate since 2 months and I know affinity designer for longer (desktop) and I was thinking about both of the programs. Your explanation is great! I learned a lot! I would like a more detailed video of the use of the different uses of both programs on the ipad buts that's maybe because I also have to learn a lot

Thank you! I, too, have to learn a lot tbh! 😊 I started on Procreate due to the ease of use, but now that I'm more familiar with Affinity, I start to sway more towards that software.
I will definitely do more tutorials and comparisons in the future. And share all knowledge as I learn new features and implement them into my workflow 😊

Great video and so many tips!!! I have a question, when you use affinity to create the lines and procreate to color, do you lose quality in the colored parts when resizing? I’m not sure if I missed you saying that

Thank you! Yes, you will lose the quality on the coloured (raster) layer if you try to increase the size a lot. I would recommend always working with larger canvas to avoid issues. However, in case of the map I'm showing, due to the background being quite smudged already, it wouldn't matter too much as you can always blurr it a little more to avoid pixelated look. Hope this helps.

@@MKBlueprints this definitely helps! Thank you so much for the response

Affinity is subscription based. I would pay twice or more the price of procreate for a one time purchase, but I got into procreate specifically to get out of Adobe's model. We need to be owning our tools, at least nominally, or we are just feeding the machine, not the culture.
In music the same issues take a different form. I don't want to help AI take over by sharing work indiscriminately. I don't want to turn a company I have no ability to influence into an ongoing part of my household budget. In music production, I similarly refuse to use subscription based or machine learning based tools, and there is no kind of music I am therefore unable to do.
Each of the conveniences and tools you mention... very very cool for a working artist like yourself, and again I would buy the product... but there is a commonality to every example - removing the need to commit, and considerations of labor time and its commercial value. Every example I could pull off in Procreate alone, given planning and given a lack of a client staring over my shoulder. Adjusting the lines after the fact is very sweet, but not historically a core need of a graphic artist/designer. Lines can be redrawn.
I understand that you are doing this for money and that these questions are directly relevant for you. Based on my limited experience with digital art, and my broad and deep and lengthy experience with music production, I mildly interrogate the notion that endless choice and undo-ability are conducive to great work or necessarily even efficient work. And I definitely think that our relationships with the makers of these tools matter.

Affinity is not subscription based. It is a one-off payment 😊 so you do own the software as long as you want without any additional cost. And yes, you're right in saying everything I show can be done in procreate, and it can. I even say so myself! I just share my process and preferences in hopes people see value in other programs than Procreate and other ways of creating art than just raster images.
