Nice of you to grade the surface of the carpark! It’s a shame it broke/caught fire twice, but that was just a tiny pin failing and some dodgy wiring (it’s called electrickery for a reason), it’s still an amazing truck, you’ve just had sh1t luck with it! I had a similar disappointment when I got my first “proper” basher (Arrma Big Rock) and it broke in a seemingly minor tumble, within minutes of being unboxed. After fixing it was amazing, until I broke it again. That’s just the nature of our hobby! What you really need is to bring it to SST in September and spend some more quality time with it! Kudos to Simon at Greens Models, he’s a lovely guy, really knowledgeable and helpful.
That gearbox design alone would be enough to make me regret getting one, nevermind everything else. It seems like unless you play with it only on flat gentle terrain, you can expect to be repairing the drive train every few hours on a $5000 truck that doesn’t even go fast
Greetings from Germany by a Dutchie. For the price tag, it can be nothing but dissapointing. As soon as it breaks, something does not fit, does not function as intended, can't go over or trough an obstacle etc., you will curse it and remember you expected more for €5000.
Damn. Unfortunate engineering with the gearbox! I bet they didn't expect people to actually drive this thing in harsher conditions than a showfloor haha
A decade or 2 ago after being into RC for years & working in a Hobby a Shop I bought my Ultimate project, a 1/10 RC leopard tank from P&E Telis Tanks. Easily burnt through $5000 on that thing..powered by a brand new OS 4 stroke that ran *beautifully* through 1/4 of it's first tank, suddenly stopped & Never ran properly again. By then I was totally over it & the endless $$$ I'd spent. Very tempted by that cheap Stuart tank you reviewed though...😅
I am sorry to see you had so much electrical trouble with it. As you know well electrical issues are the worst. When it was running it looked great and conquered the terrain easily. As I watched the wheels articulate over the small bumps and hills all I could think of was a centipede or some other insect with a lot of legs following the shape of the ground. The gearbox flaw is very irritating. Good luck with your future adventures with it. You will have some great stories.
What you need is a D drive on the shafts like the Armma pinion drive. That might help with the pin breaking all the time, it wouldn't have the strain on the pin alone.😊😊😊
Kinda cool that you have a plan now. Yes maybe it should have been better right from the box, but the modding, improving and fixing is what keeps me coming back to my collection of trucks! Also the fact that it doesn't matter, it's not going to save the world or cure deseases (probably), but innocent tinkering to keeps the brain from overheating over fretting over real problems. Very healthy! Loved this vid (as well), keep up the good work!
I'm new to the hobby and just wanted to say I appreciate the way you make it approachable. I've learned quite a bit from you in the last two weeks, and had some laughs, too.
Can't wait for the next video to find out how you fixed it so I don't have to deal with that problem in a nice way as I have already added mods and parts to my build for the truck to be almost 80KG ish and would be very frustrating to have to pull it apart again and again to get to that part, and it's not an easy one to get to. Size + weight + speed and no brakes is going to cost a fair bit if this happens on the road or at speed or just going up a steep hill which I have quite a few around me. As I am writing this i'll have to starting looking for brakes alternatives for this monster. I just hope Cross-RC is working on a fix or an updated part since we the customer / mostly you are publicly testing, and updating them on the snagging list of things. Like maybe also making an interior, adding somewhere in the chassis another brake option and documenting the winch mount and adding the parts list to greens models / their website so we can see compare and upgrade at will
Sorry about the bad luck with the build. My wife says that you are a bad influence on me. I have ordered 3 RC cars in 2 days since I started watching your channel Wednesday last. I ordered a C14& C24 and some truggy thing from Amazon. $220 this past weekend with about $300 on the wishlist.
Throwing a third option into the mix for the gearbox fix. File a flat onto the shaft where the gear is. Then Weld a small amount of material onto the inside of the gear and file it out so it locates onto the flat. Should still be able to use the original pin to ensure it locates in the right place. It’ll be removable if the gear ever needs removing for any reason and won’t weaken the shaft as much as drilling it out.
Hi Phil, at the other end of the spectrum, are you going to be churning out a review of the “HNR 360 Werewolf”? Looks to have a nice body and pretty decent internals, unlike myself !😂 Appears on the surface to be a reasonable car for the price ??
4:38 these castle escs are notorious for exploding under load, if you know Kevin Talbot, he managed to blow one up just by continuously accelerating and braking wheels off the ground.
Had a spate of steel pins snapping on spur gears so I swapped them for aluminium ones which flex, not had one snap since. Not the same I know but it may be worth looking at.
This series was a blast to watch, still boggles my mind that it's a $5k truck and weighs 50 kilos. This would have been an awesome prop for a movie like they did in Terminator with the tanker truck, it looks mental! Looking forward for the "facelift" you're planning. Cheers!
Ahh, but fixing them can be fun, sometimes. Tell you what, I will help you ( by watching ) & get you food and beer if you can ever make it out West with our cold rivers, moose , elk and beaver🌲
Awesome fun Phil, pity about the fires but hey it’s all learning and fun in the end. Definitely get that pin changed to a steel pin and weld it so it doesn’t break. Cheers for another great video from Australia mate. 🇦🇺👍🏼

that rig is awesome, the electrical looks like a nightmare indeed :P looks like you figured it out though.... too bad you had to tow it out :S the pin that sheers might actually be a sheer pin to protect the internals of the gearbox/drivetrain from too much torque. maybe up the size a bit or try a different material for the pin?

both my cross rc's have driveshaft pin tolerance issues, you may need to put a flat on the shaft and use a stubby grub pin like mip uses like a set scre with just a tiny bit of pin off the end, this will ensure the gear cant slop on the shaft and reduce the chance of shearing with the same diameter parts. i do not recommend drilling that shaft cross hole wider unless you were to remake the shaft thicker in that place as well
I feel the struggle you have. 😬 It’s little bit to much cables in that truck 🙈 Btw I just fit a fusion pro in the intruder and mange to keep the reverse light with a lot of modifications 🙈 the stock light controller couldn’t be used. And I put the front indicators along with the main light to be a little “American”. Looks very good 😊 I can show you if you want? It’s so much smoother with fusion pro.
There is a little pin in the transfer case/gear box....yup, I've had to replace it as well. Its part number 11409. M4x11. It's also the same part that holds the steering for all ten wheels. I had three extra, in my kit.
Nah mate, he sang and played it all by himself, that way he can use it in a vid. But in all seriousness, I'm interested on how he could use the music too
Vitavon makes an all aluminum SCX6 transmission. It's only single speed but guys are using it in Raminator based Rock bouncers with 8s and 12s electronics without and issues. I'm sure there's parts in there that could hold up to this if they could be adapted. Exocaged rc has the most videos on this that i know of.
the propshafts on the hg rc models have a similar pin holding them together but you probably know that, having had one but they are a lot lighter, maybe they figured a similar design would work, however they didn't take the extra weight involved, that's my thoughts anyway 😉
Thanks for sticking with it & seeing this one through Phil 👍 Would've turned some heads & put smiles on plenty of faces at EAST if nothing else! Cheers for all your efforts to bring us great content 👏💯
There's no pleasure without any pain dude 😂... That thing really is amazing, it's a shame we won't see it for a while 😢... Can you insure it? 🤔 P.S. Did you work for Boeing? That would explain it 🤭😉✌️
Awesome machine, sucks about the set backs 🔥. Also I appreciate the Raffall invites, but I've gotten to the point of realizing, if I just saved money instead of buying tickets....I'd probably have one by now😢. Great videos tho👍
I’d buy one only to convert it to an airport rescue fire truck. With foam cannons. To rescue other RC trucks stuck in the mud or put out actual RC fires
It would be so easy for Cross to fix the gearbox. They just need to use a spline or hex connection to the main gear instead of a pin. Tamiya figured this out with a design change to their tractor truck gearboxes 30 years ago.
Well, that's some serious design flaw putting all that load on a 4mm pin... 😕 I hope you find a permanently good fix for it! 🤞 Smoke and burn marks on the inside? That's some serious professional weathering you have there Phil, leave it! Same with the dirt and muck on the outside. I think the more trashed that post apocalyptic land train looks, the better! 😍 Aaron from RC sparks leaves some rigs on the outside so they can naturally "weather" by being exposed to... the weather! 😛 Can't get a better look than that! (of course it looks better on metal stuff and you need to make sure you protect vital electric components and moving parts, so there's that extra work). You're right Phil... We now know what was going wrong with the UKs air force... There was this guy who liked playing with little cars on his free time... It all got better when he left... 😅 Jokes aside, it's totally understandable you may have done a mistake or two... That rig has some serious wiring. It's not the basic servo-motor-ESC-receiver thing, right? Besides, I bet you were in a hurry, and worried about getting it all ready in time for the EAST event. Everything considered, I can't get over of how awesome this land train looks. 🤩 I do hope you get more fun and run time out of it. It's some big investment and not fun at all if you must be fixing it all the time. Besides the 4mm pins on the gearbox, how durable/reliable is the rest of the drive train and moving suspension parts? Can it handle itself on the trails and endure some off-road/light bashing without coming apart? (not thinking of jumping it at all, obviously. It's just that it is an off-road vehicle non the less). Cheers! 💪
hey Phil i use allen wrenches to make pins it works great and the don't seem to break its a hardened tool i use a hacksaw to cut them to size as to not take away from the hardened part less heat try it might be surprised lol
it looks so cool :D what if you changed mthe train boddy to a custom Thomas the tank engine or Diesel from Thomas the tank engine, the proper looks of course 80s thomas, i loved that show when i was kid :D
Nice you didn’t give up I guess once you get that much $ in there’s no choice but to get it working again. It’s a total Mad Max rig I’d love to see it set up with action figures hanging off it doing battle with other RC’s chasing it with figures on those as well. 🙌Hey I can dream. 😂
5:20 did you change anything after the fire? meaning, did you find out what was shorted then correct it before plugging the battery in or did you just but it back to the way it was?
10:54 "a little bit too much power" this is not how it works, it will only draw what it will need but you cannot connect multiple power supplies, or you have to add "shotkey" diodes at their + output
I swap transmission on my rigs if I want something different. How about trying a SCX6 transmission? Or an all medal geared dual motor Emaxx transmission or all medal geared Summit transmission. Myself, I'd try the SCX6. You can run one big, torque-dense low KV outrunner motor.
I promise you that the stock SCX6 driveline would handle that. I have used mine to pull over 100 lbs of kiddos in a stroller/ trailer made to be pulled behind a bicycle for over a year now. In high gear and low over all different surfaces and terrain.
Really enjoying this video series. Would be neat to see a slightly less complicated version. It would make a killer recovery/ tow vehicle if you swapped the guns for a flat bed and some winches.
Cross actually makes a 4wd 1/8 scale tow truck. The reviews I've seen in it seemed to be a good truck. It's based on their EmoX platform which again has seemed to be a decent rig.
Didn't you connect the sound system directly totyhe battery rather than the BEC? Wouldn't that be too much power? Greta job with the kit, hopefully you can enjoy it in the future.
To be fair, I did enjoy this build in this video more than the painful other 3 videos. Mostly because it actually got to be properly played with for once. But that being said, I'm not looking forward to seeing it again in a future video lol
A higher tensile pin is needed phil but will that put the stress somewhere else in the drive line ? . Great video be good to see what mods and improvments you make .
So, are we naming it Iris r Phil

You could label the red tow strap the "land train replacement service".
That pinion and shaft need to be a D type arrangement with a pin.
These projects are very impressive. But I'm very stupid, so I keep it simple. I can't believe how much work you did on this.
5:20 did you change anything after the fire? meaning, did you find out what was shorted then correct it before plugging the battery in or did you just but it back to the way it was?
10:54 "a little bit too much power" this is not how it works, it will only draw what it will need
but you cannot connect multiple power supplies, or you have to add "shotkey" diodes at their + output
It may give you struggles. But what a build Phil!!!
Thought of another song you could have used, Rolling Stones "dont play with me coz your playing with fire" 😂
Don’t worry Phil, at least the indicators are working., 😂
He he he! A typical trademark Tomley laugh
@Tomley RC , you should play crossout, your RC looks like something from it. It is where you build and battle war cars and other stuff!
Didn't you connect the sound system directly totyhe battery rather than the BEC? Wouldn't that be too much power?
Greta job with the kit, hopefully you can enjoy it in the future.
I've heard a lot of fires from those sound modules
To be fair, I did enjoy this build in this video more than the painful other 3 videos. Mostly because it actually got to be properly played with for once. But that being said, I'm not looking forward to seeing it again in a future video lol
Feels like end of an era :-( hope to see it again soon! Even some updates via 'shorts' vids! ❤❤❤
great truck love the music
A higher tensile pin is needed phil but will that put the stress somewhere else in the drive line ? . Great video be good to see what mods and improvments you make .
Been a great series to watch. Looks amazing but doesn't look for the faint hearted hobbyist!
