- Join us for our seventh episode of "The Flame Trench". Starship is taking steps to get to the first Booster catch, with SpaceX performing tests on the Orbital Launch Mount, with the prototype B14.1.
The Flame Trench is the new name of our weekly, 5PM eastern Friday show, where we discuss all the recent space news, and developments of the space industry.

Great Flame Trench! thank you EJ for hoasting, and thank you Sawyer, & Ryan also! GO NSF!!!
As a (very) amateur bassplayer, that intro had me in stitches !

David504 has entered the chat:
Landing tower works, but I vote to call it a dock. Spaceships dock. Boats and ships dock.
It's easier to say than landing tower every time. Dock makes more sense than landing pad or runway. Docking with the tower is what's happening.
I like it, but i think @CocoaBeachLiving had it right in another comment: Landing Interface
If Falcon Heavy was launched from Texas Stare Base the Falcon Heavy center core could land in Florida. When Super Heavy booster is enlarged for longer burn it can land in Florida.
I totally get X-ray irradiated Sawyer=spicy Sawyer. Test days can lead to irritability especially if you have to do multiple transfers to and from your chair and other contortions.
While it's amazing that one provider in particular is doing great work and specific payload capacities and target orbits and such, but it is better for everyone if we get more and more companies to that stability point and reliability point and capability point.
Besides, more rockets, more better.
you have to add the flap of IFT4 to the intro
EMPHATIC YES! There has to be at least a couple frames worth of good footage available.
(As I wrote that I realized that they probably won't, as I think the intro is only clips of stuff from their cameras, and the only hero flap footage is from SpaceX. )
@@Grandwigg There is a clip showing the solar panel deployment of James Webb Space Telescope. That's definitely not a NFS camera as that camera is mounted on the second stage of Ariane 5.
@@vsikifi ooh, then there's hope for the SuperFlap!
So the issue with the falcon heavy core recovery is that since the falcon heavy was first developed the performance of the regular falcon 9 has increased so much that there isnt much payload difference between a fully expended falcon 9 and a fully reused falcon heavy, there just likely isnt many customers that actually need a payload that will fit on a fully reused F heavy that doesnt also fit onto a falcon 9.
Congratulations Slappers… 😂😂 🎸
The truth about Boeing is they tried to cut corners buy basing themselves on legacy data and technology. You must remember that many manufacturing methods and materials are no lover available. Therefore ‘equivalent’ materials and manufacturing methods were used. These equivalents, almost always have a limitation or disadvantage. These disadvantages are amplified in a harsh environment, like space.
It is up to Boeing to properly mitigate that risk. And they have chosen to ‘do-it-live’.
Bold choice, but that similar philosophy has gotten the into big trouble with the 737 and 787.
@Davie504 Can SpaceX slap the base/booster better than you! 🎸
One of the issues with recovering the centre core is that the performance of a Block 5 F9 is so high that there are few applications for Falcon Heavy, and therefore only the most extreme contracts demand a Falcon Heavy.
The side boosters are doing less than mach 5 when they start their return. The core booster is over mach 6. And remember that kinetic energy, which must be dissipated during reentry, depends upon the square of the velocity.
You are always a welcome part of my day. Laughing and interesting discussions. 😅😊😊
Call the catch arm landing a 'landing interface' 😅😅
I rather like that.
It fits, makes use of terminology already in use with space activity, and isn't overly wordy (as I often am hahaha).
🎸
Within the first few seconds of the intro I somehow sensed what was coming. Maybe I've watched too much Davie504.
Are you guys aware of Wallace and grommet. EJ and grommet have the same eyebrows . I swear!! 😂
How does EJ get such good signal when he's out in Dexter's boat somewhere!??
If for some reason they cannot catch it, they can fly it away and land/crash it in the open area. If they have enough fuel.
@24:16 I do that sometimes in the morning especially after a good night of curry. xD
Not my cup of tea. Looking for Allisya's weekly Friday recap of SpaceFlight. Found this instead. I'll keep looking ...
Yeah, flame trench is a bit more free form than the scripted stuff.
Lots of good info, but its also a bit of banter and friendly disagreement and very informal debate. I do believe that's why they chose Flame Trench as the name.
It's definitely more podcast/club meeting and personality driven in format.
Thanks again
Love it!
Slap like now
Pineapple on pizza... _puii!_
Hopefully EJ keeps hosting these, he's great!
Where is the IFT 5 patch???
I'm sure it'll be out around the actual flight. Still some time off before then, so I imagine once we're a bit closer to the launch date we'll see it
I've been really impressed with the ones I have. I'm not surprised they've been selling out quick.
It was better than last weeks.
EJ's energy is contagious...
@@Gomtu - I'm sure some have that opinion yes.
For me, he seems more like people I know, and feels like 'just a guy' who's just gone full force into a chosen subject.
(As opposed to the 'space nerd' I am, and others some of the associated seem to be.)
I think it's a good thing it's not all the same personality types. Sometimes clash, but slightly more rounded perspective .
I feel he also does well taking the devil's advocate position on occasion.
The rotating host and participants they seem to be doing works for me.
Just wish you had something I could read. Don't like waiting though all your advertisements. Just saying.
Boy, do we have a deal for you. www.nasaspaceflight.com - Das
Do you hear that . Somebody is walking through Boeings corporate headquarters playing taps. If it's Boeing I ain't going!!!
There used to be a sign on the street leaving Boeing that read "Would the last person leaving please turn off the lights."
Turn that crap music off.
