but.... the 21st century statistics... gotta have em.
It's funny because this economist struggles to grasp a difference between a strong economy in terms of being beneficial to the wealthy, and a strong economy in terms of benefitting a society as a whole.. in fact, he had a tenuous grasp in general of the damage cyclical printing of money without a set standard to back it has. So, he's either in denial, lying, or outright delusional.
Not to mention he outright discredits the impact the sun has on climate (ironically, we are currently nearing the peak of its current cycle) which is a huge part why we are currently seeing such extreme weather events, the countless outside factors within our own planet's systems that "modeling" doesn't and won't account for (which would explain why every long-term climate catastrophe prediction has been way off the mark). He also dismissed the effect of Milankovitch cycles. I wonder if he would care to explain why Mars has experienced polar ice cap shrinkage as well, as observed in variations from the late 1970s to 2000? 🤔There's one common denominator there, it's the sun. Granted, Mars atmosphere has an exponential difference in CO2 levels to earth's, but its atmospheric density is also significantly less.

Gernot (I won't call him Mr. Wagner) is arrogant, rude, disrespectful, condescending, and best of all deliciously wrong. He is only 43 years old and sounds like teenage punk.
The esteemed professor Koonin kicked his little butt. He kept his professional cool and acted like a gentleman. Gernot should take note. Somehow I don't think he will.
    I bought Professor Koonin's book - it's fantastic.

As an economist I have to protest against Dr Wagner argumentum ad hominen against Prifessor Tol. Tol is an excellent economist, econometrician and statistian. Dr Wahner starts out buy calling a troll! Dr Wagner does not understand any econometrics at all, which is my own speciality. Further hee claims that solar is cheaper than coal in India, which is not correct. Over and over he falls into discussing weather instead of climate. Attribution models are scientifically very interesting but so far no conclusion can be drawn from them because they are not testable. He refers to something he calls 21 century statistics, new technology etc that is not science. He is right about uncertainty. And there economists have a lot to say. I could argue against Koonin much better than Wagner though I am on Koonin’s side here. If Wagner had been a good economist he would have explained how to handle the uncertainty, what to do and how much considering the alternative use of our resources. Don’t ever think that Wagner represent the majority of economists when it comes to climate change. Whatever your opionion is about climate change I see no reason to waste my time listning to Dr Wagner. He has no scientific arguments. Instead he starts with anecdotes about weather events and argumentum ad hominen.

Wonderful debate Steamboat institute. I must congratulate Mr. Wagner for doing this, science is about discussion, and not always as settled as so many believe. As for Mr. Koonin, well done, and I agree, nuclear is our future once we make it for societal gain and not military pain.

Big Oil is deep into grand scale off shore wind farms (among others). There's a false dichotomy communicated to the public, in "good government" vs "bad Big Fossil fuel". They are perfectly aligned and in this together.

  • @poplarboydavid

Mr. Wagner waffles. What a waste of time he was responsible for during this debate. Mr Koonin gets my vote. Why? Because he cares about the damage and deaths that a rushed approach to switching off fossil fuels will cause - that's murderous. I agree that before fossil fuels are switched off, we need an effective alternative a way of generating energy, operational.

I think they are only factoring in the fixed cost of the asset over a fixed period of time. Solar panels, of course, as "science" will tell you do not last as long, so it would be nice to factor in a 50 year total cost of ownership, not a one-time purchase.

I suspect many watching or commenting here have studied hard sciences or engineering. The language used by Wagner is that of a politician, so is his condescension. The nerve of using uncertain data and qualifying the other person's data as "19th century science". He is offensive and derisive when he addresses Koonan. Shameful display.

Petrol Colonialism... great description of it. And it's a phrase that will resonate with many on the left who know the atrocities that went along with traditional Colonialism of the poorer nations. In many ways petrol Colonialism is worse b/c so much relies on oil and fossil fuels in the modern world, the historical Colonialism perpetrated against them took their freedoms and sovereignty.... petrol Colonialism does that to a degree but also completely stops their growth and in many areas will actually set them back.
