  • Steamboat Institute hosted a Campus Liberty Tour debate at Cornell University on Mar 15, 2023. Drs. Steven Koonin and Robert Socolow debated the resolution: “Climate science compels us to make large and rapid reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.” The debate was moderated by Steamboat Institute Blankley Fellow Sarah Westwood.
In the pre-debate poll, 37% of the audience agreed with the proposition vs. 47% who opposed it. In the post-debate poll, 28% of the audience agreed vs. 66% who opposed.

Steve Koonin speaks from a thorough understanding of the details contained in the IPCC reports, and logical conclusions that can be made from those details. Nobody contests this because it is impossible to contest.
The problem is that most IPCC report summaries presented by advocacy groups and the media are not a proper representation of what the IPCC reports actually say.
This is the simplicity of Koonins arguments which make them difficult to counter.

Wait. Solar panels can give you refrigeration? How cool. I want the ones that work at night.

When its stated "the science is settled". You lose integrity and trust. This is the theory of gravity. This is a complex dynamic system being judged with questionable models, questionable data sets and being pushed through politically.

Socolow is a poor debater. I don’t think he was a good candidate to properly argue the science. Koonin has debated other guys who put forward more concrete arguments.

Don’t get Socolows argument, he makes out that it’s not about science, it’s about what people think about it. Not particularly helpful.

If Socolow's assumptions were actually true, we would all want to help decarbonize. He doesn't question his own assumptions. He doesn't seem to understand the science at all. Koonin is trying to help him understand the science, but he's frozen to his assumptions.

    • @mrunning10

And what "assumptions" are these? The Keeling Curve? The MEASURED increase in global temperatures since 1880? The one-for-one correlation in co2 and temperatures for the past fucking MILLION years? Those "assumptions?'
How about the multi-millions paid by the various fossil fuels lobbies and the fucking Cock Brothers to influence Congress to keep the entire industry going?

Exactly. If climate change is the nr1 emergency then every premature closure of nuclear power plant (like in Germany) is a crime against climate/humanity.

What’s is the percentage of Carbon composition in our Atmosphere ?

CO2 is currently said to be 422 parts per million; ie., 0.000422 or 0.04%.

I am at 32:10 and I object. This graph is completely in accurate. 1930s where way warmer than the graph suggests. Kinda ruins the debate. Even though I agree with his sentiment, I feel like Steven Koonin is arguing a strawman.

Prof. Socolo is clueless about mistrust in science due to hyperbole by “experts” both for covid and “climate science”. This level of disconnect doesn’t bode well for the climate science community.
Socolo was also woefully underprepared for this debate and shed little light beyond the first slide in his presentation. I hope the “expert community” is able to field better arguments to convince us of their fear mongering.

First off the IPCC is a watered down assessment the majority of the people attending the g28 this year was oil representatives and special interest groups out numbering the scientific representatives and those concerned about the emergency. This guy is being paid by oil companies because he is using the same chery picking BS data for example his downplaying of the heating we have been seeing feeling and measuring thst is real its now and it's undeniable for one we have reached the 1.5 raise in temps since the beginning of the industral age. The papers will come out a week or two into the new year will be 1.4 or 1.5 degrees not thought we would reach untill the end of the century. The Oceans around the world are heating temperatures are rising now highest temps ever recorded and its not just regions effected by el.neno 2023 was hottest year since the Dinasores walked the earth but all said and done 2024 will have much more extrem weather and heat maybe the developed world can keep the deaths from extrem heat down low after all the non scientific guy said deaths are less now than back in the turn of the century be for we had air conditioning. As long as the power stays on people stay indoors just hope no big power outage happens while we are under one of these new so called heat domes or massive loss of life will acure as my predictions go's 2024 will have storms bigger than the 500 year events that's happened in recent years temps blowing records again like 2023 seen more than ever broken in a year next year will make guys like those climate denying oil reps and there sap suckers look like the fake misleading goofs they are its not about the $$$ they get its people's lifes that are being lost kids right now don't get to enjoy the same climate we did if you were born before the 70s you have seen the climate change especially if you like gardening or the wildlife and nature and recent changes in the last 5 yrs was about as much change for the 25 befor it thats a rapid up tick we don't have long the top scientists working on climate related material are already admitting we will need to use things like seed clouding and reflecting some of the sun's rays away using satellites now I don't think nothing was mentioned like that in this video or that cost of rebuilding from the extrem events are bankrupting insurance company's and now many are not going to insure certain areas these to will grow the numbers of tornados have gone up 10 fold and much bigger and destructive . Can't belive this denial proprogsnda is still being stood for they need to be torn apart by real facts real scientist

@@Junglebtc And since the IPCC completely disagrees with his interpretations and lies of omission... since they disagree...
Like all charlatans he would never present this info to any actual climate scientists on the IPCC because they'd school him pretty quickly. He knows this.
