  • Simply modified Sears lawn mower now runs on propane. It's cleaner and puts out less Carbon Monoxide. Here is info that will help you convert your lawn mower.
    Part 1 - inlet, tubing, regulator, tank.
    Part 2 - valve, mount, fittings, mowing performance, future add-ons.
    Constructive comments and questions are welcomed !

    Cool. I like the idea of the dual-fuel motor, in case you have to put the mower in the shop for maintenance. Simply remove the propane tank and they are free to work on it, just as the mower came from the factory. Thanks for posting this video.

    I know this is an older video but it answers my questions. I have an old MTD tiller my dad gave me and it has some carb trouble...so I was planning to convert it to propane. Simple. I actually have a regulator from a portable gas grill that bottles screw directly to and I can control via a knob on the regulator itself. We shall see how well it works soon. Thanks for your video.

    After converting my mower to propane (out of necessity, carb was too far gone) I find a LOT of people have posted ideas and best practices. Thank You for the video... each one helps.

      You're welcome ! I admit that some things I did here are not best practice. (I really should put an automatic shut-off on the propane line.) But it works great for my purposes. Best of luck with your project !

    Thank you for showing this. I was really lost on how to do something like this on my own mowers. Your simple setup is very clean and works.

  • @auxpowerunit
    @auxpowerunit  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    That sounds like a nice setup. I also like how the engine starts within the first or second pull. It never started that easily while using gasoline. I did go back to burning gasoline for a while, because I had some old stale gas that I needed to get rid of. The propane was ideal for starting, then I turned it off and ran on gasoline.
    I agree with your concern about filling the crankcase with propane. I'm going to add a Garretson KN demand regulator to avoid that problem.

    I like your system very simple. I see what you mean on a variable load engine you would need to constantly be moving that valve up and down but on a lawnmower it's just nice and steady. I never would have thought enough vapor would come to that small tube. Anyway thanks for posting.

    • @auxpowerunit
      @auxpowerunit  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That small tube surprised me too. It highlights just how little propane is needed.

    I'm glad this video was helpful to you. I get about 2 hours run time from the 16.4 ounce tank. I don't know how that would compare with a generator setup because the loads may vary. One of the limitations of my setup is the carb - it is designed for single-speed operation. Ideally, with your DC genset, you'll want a throttleable carb. Also incorporate a Garretson KN demand regulator, so you can save fuel when operating with low loads. I'm anxious to see what you'll come up with.

    Thank you so much for making this video. I know you discussed how much it cost to mow your yard in either this video (or part 1). I plan on doing this same thing, but I will be placing it on an older mower engine that I will attach to an alternator off a car with a battery and invertor. So what kind of run time do you get off a small tank like that? Thanks great video!

    aewsome I love it! now my question will be what if you want to do it on a bigger engine with a gas engine jus like a 1200 CC. like a fork lift engine I want to do that on a Datsun 1200 Thank you

    I did the same on a 1971 onan super ez basically compressor hose with quick disconnectors one to the regulator the other to the Airbox works great on engines with governors

    Regarding the regulator, did the one you used just happen to put out the appropriate volume needed for your engine? I suppose you could just use the ball valve to restrict flow if it is too high. If the flow rate is too low, can you adjust the regulator? Seems like you just got lucky based on my ignorance the details. Very nice and informative vid. Thanks for putting it together for us.

  • @auxpowerunit
    @auxpowerunit  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've seen some other videos in which people did this on lawn tractors. You may need larger tubing to get more propane flow. But everything else will be the same. Good luck !

    well my dad has alot of old tractor batteries they may weight it down but the engine is strong enough for the extra weight and i use it mostly for racing around and i may move the engine to a little gokart im making to go faster :) i live on a island with little slopes and almost no mountain so its fun to drive around on the lawn or road or even the ofroad racing park here where i live. even though im 14 i do know alot and i can drive quite well not cars but tractors and farm machines.

    I didn't find any need to change the spark plug or re-gap it. The OEM plug works well. One interesting finding: the plug stays very clean - no carbon buildup. I recently switched back to using some gas, because I needed to get rid of some stale gas which wouldn't combust in my weed trimmers. So, I poured the gas into the lawn mower and used the propane to start it. Once started, I shut off the propane and burn the gas instead. My next goal is to upgrade the system with a JB-2 regulator.

    You live in Florida. I can tell by the vegetation. I ran my mower on propane this weekend but I'm having power issues with the green bottles (ran ok on the skinny blue ones) I think its due to no pressure regulation.

    • @auxpowerunit
      @auxpowerunit  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I'm in Tampa. Everything grows so fast here. Regarding the power issues with the short bottles - the tall bottles may allow the propane to vaporize more efficiently. I get power cuts when liquid propane droplets go through the tubing. That isn't as bad on warm days. Sometimes, ice will even form on the surface of the regulator. If I occasionally warm the regulator with my hand, the propane vaporizes more evenly. Also, make sure your bottle is hanging with the connector facing straight upward, so it will only feed vapor to the regulator. Take care!

      8 years later, have you ever had any issues? What about with very thick grass, have you had to regulate the propane to more when you needed more torque? I'm using a 4 stroke on the lower leg of a Johnson seahorse (so it's a boat motor), and want to run it on propane so curious if I would need to play with the propane/air ratio to have it running well.

    LOL ! I wouldn't try that with a more expensive mower. I made the mistake of doing that with a Honda mower in the past, only to find the crankshaft on those are not hardened, so it bent.

  • @auxpowerunit
    @auxpowerunit  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's interesting. I wasn't aware anybody could use a hydroxy generator on a lawn mower, because you'd need an electrical power source.

  • @kscmac78

    Have you done any more with a better regulator? I have a 10hp gen I would like to convert

    • @auxpowerunit
      @auxpowerunit  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, I haven't done any further experimentation. I left the design at this stage of completion because it works well enough for my weekly lawn mowing. If you are converting a generator, it would definitely be better to use a zero-regulator. This Impco catalog is a good reference: www.impco.ws/pdf/catalogs/IMPCO_Master_Parts_Catalog_Dec_2013_Hires.pdf
      Good luck !

    +auxpowerunit - This is an " Excellent " Video and " Conversion ". I have seen many Videos and it's the " BEST WAY " to go through the " Filter / Breather " since you don't have to do much! Save a lot of Money, Simpler, Fast Conversion too!

    • @auxpowerunit
      @auxpowerunit  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right. Directing propane through the breather was so simple. It works well on this mower because it is a single-speed engine. For variable-speed application on my edger, I use an on-demand regulator, which is a copy of the Impco model J regulator. That required more vacuum to work, so I had to connect into the carb venturi. I replaced the gasoline jet with a propane "spud-in".

    How long does that Coleman tank last?

    • @auxpowerunit
      @auxpowerunit  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depending on how thick the grass is, I've been able to get a 1-pound propane bottle to cut about 1/2 acre. I calculated it isn't much cheaper than using gasoline, but the propane gives much cleaner exhaust so it is worthwhile to me.

    How do you keep the crackcase lubed up if the fuel does not have any oil in it anymore?

    • @auxpowerunit
      @auxpowerunit  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That would be the case with a 2-stroke engine. But this Briggs & Stratton engine is 4-stroke, so it already keeps oil in the crankcase sump.
