Used this video series combined with a Haynes manual to replace the head gaskets on my 02 Chrysler Concorde 3.5 SOHC. Worked like a charm. Didn't have nearly as much trouble getting the exhaust manifolds off. Had way more trouble getting the Camshaft Sprockets off though. Had the heads resurfaced at a machine shop out here in VA called Ballos Machines. It was my first ever engine repair and it went perfectly. Thanks for your time in making these. I've put over 1k trouble-free miles on her since. If anyone gets any questions about working on this engine along the way feel free to reply to this comment and I'll help out if I can
@MattsMotorz my timing belt broke on the highway and I am going to be doing a valve job. I'm very glad you made these videos but my question is if you had some advice on where to get a gasket kit or where you bought yours from?
Matt - great videos... I've used your ones on the 300m for Strut and sway bar replacement but actually hoping I won't need these on the head and/or head gasket replacement. But my 2000 300m is losing coolant and am not finding any visible leaks. Any suggestions?
gkwillmott These engines are notorious for leaking into the valley due to a bad o-ring on the coolant pipe going into the manifold. However, eventually the valley fills up and it starts to drain out onto the ground. If there is absolutely no external leaks, then I would advise pressure testing the cooling system and then doing a leak down test to see if you can zone in on the leak.
For anyone who is going to tear into an engine or any other piece of machinery use plastic bags, cardboard boxes, anything you can to keep the bolts separated and labeled!
The rear timing cover comes as two pieces (you can see this in this video series) If you just want to replace the drivers side head, you will only need to remove the drivers side rear timing cover, which requires removal of the power steering pump.
MattsMotorz Thank you, these videos are so helpful. I was looking at the portion of your video, and couldn't quite make it out. This will make my job so much easier.
When I have done timing belt replacements on my Y2K 300M, the old belt looked identical to the new. You can't tell the condition of the belt by how it looks.
No way to say for sure unless I was there unfortunately. The leak just needs to be found. Make sure to follow the trail upwards to make sure it isn't a leak higher up that is dripping down towards the bell housing area. Clean the area off and then wait for it to leak again. Also you may want to try a UV dye kit if you're really having trouble.
Glad you found the leak! This is on a 300M correct? Are you referring to the pipe below the intake? A VERY common problem for 300M's is the O-ring between this pipe and the LOWER intake, goes bad and floods the valley with coolant causing it to leak out the back.
Matt, first thing I noticed when you started draining the coolant was that it appears to be the incorrect coolant type. These cars require a specific type of coolant like Zerex G05 which is yellow to clear in color. This specific coolant prevents corrosion. Using the standard green coolant can cause all kinds of issues from what I understand. Not trying to be a PITA critic but wonder if you have experienced any issues with the cooling system?
Hard to say without seeing what is wrong. Are you talking about the plastic cover over the positive terminal? Use a screw driver or something to pry it open. (Again, hard to say without seeing what is wrong)
Hey Matt my 300m 99 3.5 replaced the thermostat 180 cars been doing fine but starting to get hot again.the radiator. Is staying cold top hose hot pressure. On it.maybe try taking thermostat out? I'm at a lost what to u think.
James Crockett I wouldn't take the thermostat out. That can cause a whole bunch of other issues. If you put a brand new thermostat in it, it should be working fine, but if you want to be sure the thermostat is working correctly, take it out and put it in boiling water with a thermometer. When it opens, take note of the temperature. Generally, thermostats open around 180-200 F. Make sure to bleed the cooling systems after any service to it. This can cause a whole bunch of issues.
Thank you Matt, for these videos on how to replace the cylinder heads, I have not experience as a mechanic but I fixed my son’s car thanks to your videos. Here is the link of the engine already running it took me about 10 days to fixed it but I spent only like $200.00 in parts including one head. th-cam.com/video/ddNRaAo04Mg/w-d-xo.html
+Vickie Hopson You mean coolant temp sensor? I believe it is possible to just use a deep 19mm socket and just unbolt it. It is located above where the radiator hose attaches to the engine. When I did mine recently, the wiring harness was in the way so I had to remove the upper intake just to get to it.

wow, good job with very details, thanks man!

Awesome job on the video good detail keep up the good work
my respect for the mechanic and after this who wants to buy this car
Oh, new thermostat, and housing? Forgot to mention that too? New struts, all new front end parts also? Tie rod ends, stabilizer links, ect… ect….
To remove and replace just the right head (drivers side), is it necessary to remove the back timing cover and AC compressor?

Glad to hear it! Good luck!
thanks matt great video
When U did this job could U tell if the timing belt had at one time been replaced?
When I have done timing belt replacements on my Y2K 300M, the old belt looked identical to the new. You can't tell the condition of the belt by how it looks.
How much would it cost to get it fixs at a shop
Very nice here
very good...
Have coolant leaking..coming from bottom were motor and trans meet.any suggestions..maybe rear freeze plugs?

Matt found the leak coming from the top water neck looks like the intake is next to come off.

Yes it was the heater tube.
So fine
Hey Matt what was wrong with this engine?? timing belt broke?? By the way Great job!
Edgar Toala Thanks! It was over heated BAD and the heads cracked.
what was that pulley called

Zerex G05 is yellowish to clear in color, not Orange at all
Sean Wright You're right about that! Thanks, I will change my comment to reflect that. 👍🏻
How to access the positive terminal on a 300M. The red Cap wouldn't budge. Please Help!
Hard to say without seeing what is wrong. Are you talking about the plastic cover over the positive terminal? Use a screw driver or something to pry it open. (Again, hard to say without seeing what is wrong)
Yes, the box like shaped red plastic cover over the positive terminal.
Yeah, get something with leverage like a flat head screw driver and pry it up and open.

That's awesome! Glad my videos helped out!
Howd you spend 200 on the head and new gaskets?
I did not just watch you use a torque wrench to break a bolt loose? :P haha naughty!
+James'sWorld Lol I don't remember doing it but I definitely should not have! Must have been feeling real lazy that day.
+The Savage Garage At least it was a cheap torque wrench that probably wasn't very accurate in the first place.
how to replace heat sensor on a 1997 Chrysler LHL 3.5 Liter

and afterwards he had to reassemble the entire front end of the car XD
Its a 99 300m 3.5
using that bar to much like work did mine with out using the bar.
