Hi Cody! I love your videos! I am excited to go to the temple for a month. Could you tell me if what you recorded in this video would be for a beginner with good physical, mobility and flexibility? I would love to have this experience no matter how much I would learn since I want to experience temple life and have an approach to Kung Fu philosophy and basics. I am open to the experience but I would like to know what to expect. Thank you! Nadia
Hi Nadia! Im so happy you've enjoyed them. I know that this school has changed locations and is currently in Sichuan province. Yes about 90% of the students I saw after a year being there were complete beginners with zero martial arts experience. Perhaps 1% had previous experience with kung fu and a small percentage had tried other martial arts like karate, may thai, or boxing. When I arrived I was 40 pounds overweight and out of shape but that changed very fast. Just like any sport it is difficult at first but over time your body developed muscle memory and it becomes easier. To prepare I would focus on flexibility, cardio, and also some core exercises like planks, wall sits, and press ups. For the first week you should expect to be a little sore and can be difficult depending on how hard you're willing to practice. It all gets easier in time though. It should be a life changing experience for you both physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually. Have fun!
Hi Cody. I am thinking of going there for about 6 months or so. Could you give skne idea of the air quality there? I am worried about air pollution in China. Thank you anyway.
The school here in the videos has since moved to Sichuan province and is no longer in Kunming and now is at an even more beautiful temple. The air quality depends on the city and area. The air quality in Kunming was never all that bad. I do know that Beijing has it pretty bad. If I were you I wouldn't let the air quality come between you and an amazing trip in China. My time in China changed my life for the better and I would not hesitate to do it again. Good luck and thanks for watching!
Sorry for the delay I was camping in the mountains for a week. The email address for the school is shaolintemple.com however it isn't the original shaolin temple. Since I was at this school it has moved to Sichuan province to an even more beautiful temple. Check the web page for current prices. When I went the early rate was about $6000 USD and I beleive the rates are close to the same today. If you have any more questions let me know. You can also message me on my IG : codyabroad88 Thanks so much for watching my kung fu videos and good luck on your kung fu journey!
hi hi I have a question how much do they charge to learn kung fu stay there in Dorm for a year because I really wanna learn kung fu from the great masters .
I was there for a year and the fee was $6000 USD for all training, dorms, and 3 meals a day. The school has been closed since covid but according to their website they will open again on March 2023 once China drops its covid restrictions. You can check out their website at shaolintemple.com. let me know if you have any more questions and thanks so much for watching!
Hey Cody. I'm starting to plan a trip to learn kung fu, I don't know much about it, but I seems to me that the internal styles can change a lot our energy and I hope the trainnning can change my life a bit, I want to feel more happy and optimistic. You said you have friends who went to Kunyu, can you introduce me to then? I would be very glad if I could have a chat with somebody about it. I would like to know how things work around there and if the trainning is good enough. Like you, I'd like to choose between the styles. Thanks for your time man! appreciate
Hey thanks so much for commenting Hugo! And thanks so much for watching! I appreciate it. The internal styles are definitely life changing. I'll send you a detailed message privately.
I loved the food! It got a little repetitious being there a whole year and since it was all vegetarian a few students went to local restaurants occasionally like fresh dumplings or sushi. The food was very healthy though and made fresh everyday from vegetables from the local market and some we grew ourselves. Also great noodles and fresh buns and rice made daily. Let me know if you have more questions. Thanks for watching!
@@jeremyjolly3645 Oh nice. Wing Chun was taught by Wu Shifu my favorite teacher there. He's a master and has alot of experience in movie choreography as well. I hope to return someday just to study again with him.
Hey. Maybe you could answer my questions? Do they have an Official Website? Because there are many temples and they all sounds similar. Did you had experience before? What was your week Plan? Did it changed? Have you changed? Do they treat men and women same?
Hi Linda! Sorry for the delay in responding. Yes their website is shaolintemple.com This was my first time practicing martial arts and I studied there for a year. I have a video for each day of the week that shows what the training was. They also have a schedule on their website. Men and women were treated equally and dorms were separated by sex. I changed a lot. I lost 25 kilos in a year but I changed more mentally, emotionally, and spiritually than I thought. Let me know if you have any more questions. Please subscribe and check out my other videos from the school in my martial arts playlist. Also you can message me on facebook or Instagram as well. Take care!!!
We would practice a lot so it usually went pretty well. People sometimes got hurt. I got injured a couple times while there. I lived at this temple for a year in Southern China. Thanks for watching!
It was as intense as you made it. The shifu would always challenge us and push us based on our fitness and abilities so the new students had it a bit easier than the experienced students. Overall it came down to each person's motivation. Also yes there are two students that I studied with who are now disciples of our Shifu and are starting their own schools in other countries.
Before each training session there is a warm up where we jog or run for a few minutes inside the temple. The temple is located in Guandu Ancient Town in the city of Kunming and there arent any mountains or forests nearby the temple. I know the Kunyu Shan school in Shandong Province is located in a small village in the mountains and I've heard they have daily runs in the nearby forest/mountains. I have videos of Guandu Ancient Town and Kunming in my China playlist you can check out if youd like to see the surrounding area of the Yunnan Shaolin Temple.
Hey man quick question about this im planning on going to train there but I don't know how long I should stay there you got any recommendations on how long I should stay there ? I'm extremely interested in the martial arts program there I need to know how long I should stay there to get extremely fit and learn the martial arts got any recommendations?
Well this widely varies depending on the person and how good of shape you are already in. I stayed for a year and was 20 kilos over weight and got in great shape and learned alot of kung-fuand I was 29 at the time. There's also a huge discount for staying a year. I've also seen students come for 3 months and made some amazing progress. One thing I didnt enjoy about the school is you can't school your style you want to practice you have to do all the styles. Check out my other kung fu videos to see how it is there all week. This temple is amazing but when I return personally I will choose a school where I can focus on Tai chi but thats just me. Let me know if you have more questions!
I plan to go there for 3 months and im curious about how much martial arts will i be able to learn in that time. Do they have a grading system like karate? if so how far did you get in a year?
Nice! There is no grading or level system like in other martial arts. Basically you learn all of your basics, stances, kicks, punches, etc and also you learn your different forms, your set routines. Different kung fu, Tai qi, wing Chun forms, and some weapons forms. In a year I learned about 40 forms and was very out of shape when I arrived and had to focus on fitness first. Everyone learns at a different pace. In 3 months I'd say you could learn 10 to 20 various forms including one or two weapons forms and have a solid base with the basics. Message me more with more questions and check out all my other videos of the school in my martial arts Playlist. Thanks for watching!

Hey Cody I have a couple questions if you dont mind! 1. Did you had any experience with Mandarin before you first started this training ? My native language is French and I'm not really good at speaking English ( mostly because of my accent ) but I understand pretty well, do you think someone in my position could realistically manage to understand (clearly) their explanations ? 2. The masters don't really speak English but they can easily explain it in their own way. I learned everything from just their very basic English.
