Taxis will be useful to get to Old Oak Common in order to catch your HS2 train home! I remember the old rank, it was crazy and the air wasn’t the cleanest 💨
Thanks for rekindling the memory of me and my late workmate stumbling into a cab back in 1979 and asking the driver to 'follow that cab' (containing some more of our workmates) to the Lamb Inn on Lambs Conduit Street for last orders. We were knackered and in need of an emergency pint before collapsing into our hotel beds to start again the next morning at 5am. It must have been Tuesday because Sunday & Monday nights had been in Glasgow, Tuesday London and Wednesday back again in Glasgow.
The underground one was so good because you could get off the train and get into a taxi without encountering any bad weather at all. Now it’s a case of having to walk outside and round the block down the road …😢
Spoke to the mobility lounge staff on the Sunday it shut, as our driver dropped us off at the old taxi rank. He was confused as I’m a wheelchair user, so he still used the mobility drop off area. The mobility lounge staff said it’s going to be confusing for disabled passengers as they’re apparently keeping the mobility drop off zone in the old taxi rank, which I guess will be fine for dropping off. However they’re apparently keeping the same area for mobility pick up, but unless you time it when someone is dropping off a disabled passenger, you’ll be waiting ages for a taxi to come. They’re keeping the mobility drop off area here as the cctv that links to the mobility lounge so passengers can alert the staff to needing help are here (and none in the new rank) and also the help point is here too. So any passengers being dropped off at the new rank can’t alert the staff in the mobility lounge to them needing assistance to get into the station. So if I rock up with a large suitcase, I can’t ask for help like I could before via the cctv (as I’m deaf so can’t use the help point which is why both the help point and cctv are needed) or if someone who is blind is dropped off can’t ask for assistance navigating into the station (especially as the layout has changed) or someone who can’t walk far like my mum and would use a station wheelchair manned by station staff can’t request it. I’ll be filming a video the end of April about how it works/ doesn’t work as a disabled passenger.
Thanks for the heads-up that West Garden had closed - useful for my London trip planned for 23rd April. Appreciate the info, diagrams and history lesson!
Great video as always, good point about the busses with some of the busiest and most frequent in london trying to also exit, will be interesting to see at rush hour.
When I started in 1960 there was a pair of gates to Euston on the Euston Rd .In and Out , worked well. When they put the underground one in I only used it when it was running. If you got stuck down there the pollution from all the diesals was suffocating.
Thanks Rob! I wish I had collected some good photos like London Rail did. Certainly something for me to bear in mind with any future developments in the cab trade! Very glad to see you are contributing lots of videos chap!
Got a taxi off the rank at Euston heading towards wapping high street. At first he tried to refuse our ride as I have a guide dog ( I’m blind) stood my ground and he took the fare but makes for a not good atmosphere on the journey. As we pulled out of Euston he said “is wapping east or west”!!!! Then he said I’ll need your post code for the sat nav or I won’t be able to get you there. Madness. Love the channel keep on keeping on mate
I worked for a garage , the chap who used to wash the cabs was caught stealing a cab at night and taking it out. I said to a carriage officer once who asked to see my badge ,ask to see my license, badges get stolen.that's what matters.
Sorry about your experience there are some dodgy people driving cabs I'm not sure how but I had people in my cab having similar experiences there not provisional ❤
im a cab driver and there are some bad dodgey drivers if any one has a bad experience video whats goin on you can keep your phone out of sight and also get video of the back or front of the cab then PLEASE PLEASE report that cab to TFL we dont want rubbish like that in this trade
Loving the vids mate 👌 would you be able do one on how existing taxi drivers feel on new people starting the knowledge because you are all competing and having more people starting would create more competition. Thanks and keep up the good work.
It’s never viewed in this way… knowledge students generally get a lot of respect from cab drivers as cabbies remember how difficult their own journey was. The other way of looking at it is that we need more cabbies to come through to ensure we provide a reliable service. If there’s regular shortages of cabs at stations, people will only wait for so long before ordering from they who must not be named
Great video re the new Euston taxi rank & good to know the mobility (PRM) part is to be retained on the west side a bit longer! They essentially had no plans to replace that which is why they've no doubt kept the old one for that purpose. I kept a photographic record of the old Euston taxi rank during its last days (as Tom the Taxi Driver has mentioned on the bio)
Thank you! I tried desperately to find your contact details for usage on the photos (I hope you don’t mind), they are beautiful and capture it exactly as I remember
I used that rank other night, Camden Town please arlington Rd, its a rock and hard place on getting there effectively we need the the left into Eversholt st
@tomthe taxidriver You did videos about Heathrow and London City airports already but i would be curious to see if you ever have a Gatwick, Stansted or Luton run. Do you even take these rides?
It’s an improvement from a passenger point of view in terms of it being clear which taxi you’ll be getting in but the pedestrian route from the station concourse is quite convoluted.
Used the rank yesterday and it was one in one out for the drivers dropping off. Seems a better design but more of a walk for the passenger to get to than the old one.
I haven't been there yet Tom as also just got back after 4 months as a living kidney donor and put in a levc tx for first time😮handy to know drop of is in same place😊
Not personally used it Tom but I imagine it's only worth the hassle when the sleeper is coming in as people are groggy and want to get to their residence quicker rather than cheaper.
It all depends how busy the streets are (subjective of course), it can be mentally draining driving in search for hands. So sometimes a rank can move faster and it's not as mentally draining. But I agree, back of a very long rank is generally not the place to find a job 😊
I would imagine it is because (1) it's a guaranteed job; you could have to drive for longer to find someone, (2) you're not using fuel [for non-electric cabs], and (3) in theory, you can do other stuff while waiting.
Taxi ranks like you can find at major UK train stations give many passengers especially single females a feeling of safety knowing it is proper Taxi's they are getting into
Euston set down needs easier access for disabled passengers however the pick up is good but passenger assistance needs to ensure that they support passengers with reduced mobility to the rank.
The exit shouldn't be an issue with regards to competing with buses. Only some night buses head out through that exit now. All other buses exit towards the east via Churchway (even the 18 which then heads west).
They designed an underground rank at Liverpool st station back in the day. They got one thing wrong we couldn't U Turn to pick up coz it was too tight would you believe. They scrapped it after a few days.
Tom, what is taxi driver opinion of cyclists? As a cyclist I find them very very patient amd forgiving. Also I find they give extra time to get up to speed.
Either Paddington rank is confusing for passengers or I’m just not great at using a taxi rank because both times I’ve used it I’ve tried to get into the wrong cab and been directed to the right one 😅
No chance. It’s a tact to boost their numbers of disabled accessible vehicles and have more clout. Even the drivers who are doing it for the £400 will forever have their name on their listings.
We had 12 ranks in Weston super mare when I first started now we’re down to 3 and one of them No one uses!! Not one rank on the sea front!!! We all believe that the planning guy had some kind of bad experience with a taxi driver years ago and he’s made it is life work to screw us all over!!! Seriously we can’t think of any other reason they have been so frigging ruthless!!!

It still might, but Sunak stupidly decided to expect private funding to get it done in his move to curtail the line. This could change if Labour get into power though, but who knows really.
When will all Black Cabs become electric? I have heard from the current Gov that it should be within a year, but I do not think thats realistic at all........do you or anyone know? I have used the new Rank and it seems pretty easy, but I still get confused on which cab is free or not.

No, actually I haven't tried it yet. Potentially next time I'm in the area I might try it. Ohh hold on,,,. I live in Sweden so,, never mind😁 Great videos 👍
I was in London gave a taxi driver a nice 20 note he said sorry can't take that I said its money, it's scottish he said I said are you racist cause scotland in the uk we part of the uk he said am not takeing it I said don't but the ride will be free let me see if u know what he did??
Camden Council need to give us the left into Eversholt Street or churchway if they don't it's gonna cause problems, did the rank this morning Saturday but weekdays it's going to be impossible the u-turn upper Woburn pl.

1:20 Ah, Trigger Happy TV. Good times that show. Didn't think at the time that was Euston.
Great to see you back on the mean streets Tom! 💜😀
That video is rank. 😂
Agreed great to have you back ❤
The price of progress I guess. The Kings Cross rank seems to flow pretty well, from an occasional customer's perspective at least.
Very true, but have you noticed that there's 2 lanes there, and only 1 is used 😉
Thanks for the heads-up that West Garden had closed - useful for my London trip planned for 23rd April. Appreciate the info, diagrams and history lesson!
So now both sides of Euston Square Gardens are entirely occupied by taxi ranks with no gardens.
Great video as always, good point about the busses with some of the busiest and most frequent in london trying to also exit, will be interesting to see at rush hour.

I would have got in the next one. Would hate to have someone driving me around that clearly has a issue.
@eddiefara yes not a issue with proper cabbies it's are pried to and job to help people

I attempted to use the second taxi rank at Euston. Absolute nightmare! I turned around and used the tube instead
Cheers Tom
Great tom

The Spice Girls nailed it.

Cannot wait to see your next video! When is going to come out?

My question about over-ranking is - why wait for ages in a long queue when you can drive the streets with your light illuminated plying for hire?
It all depends how busy the streets are (subjective of course), it can be mentally draining driving in search for hands. So sometimes a rank can move faster and it's not as mentally draining.

What if the driver wants to take a few minutes to check the footy scores or have a quick bite to eat etc
If it’s quiet on the street, you’re wasting diesel just driving round looking for work.
Taxi ranks like you can find at major UK train stations give many passengers especially single females a feeling of safety knowing it is proper Taxi's they are getting into
The sports direct club , I was one of em
Euston set down needs easier access for disabled passengers however the pick up is good but passenger assistance needs to ensure that they support passengers with reduced mobility to the rank.

The old underground rank was known as ‘The Gas Chamber’ due to the exhaust fumes down there and no ventilation. Also known as Sprts ‘Direct Catwalk’ 😂
They designed an underground rank at Liverpool st station back in the day. They got one thing wrong we couldn't U Turn to pick up coz it was too tight would you believe. They scrapped it after a few days.
Wonder if they ever bother to get some cabbie input when they are designing them?
Tom, what is taxi driver opinion of cyclists?
As a cyclist I find them very very patient amd forgiving. Also I find they give extra time to get up to speed.
Stopped going there once the underground rank went.
Either Paddington rank is confusing for passengers or I’m just not great at using a taxi rank because both times I’ve used it I’ve tried to get into the wrong cab and been directed to the right one 😅
The old rank is going to be a phv rank apparently Euston want to get them off eversholt street
What's your view on joining Uber in London? Lots of financial incentives!

Hi in your days of driving have ever come to Walsall west midlands england junction 10 m6 Walsall churckery
The old underground rank was horrible, i certainly dont miss it!
Godspeed
The new rank looks nice but is quite a walk from the platform. Doesnt look a clear path at all!
Euston we have a problem
I agree there is a lot off one way but not needed aswell m.
Nice
The old rank looks Toxic
Unfortunately Tom it isn't great for loading wheelchair passengers,it'll hold up the rest of the rank plus on point your on a curve .
Mik Scarlet had a rant about the new taxi rank in a recent video as its not designed for mobility use.
