Re the leatherworks. Back in the day, urine was used in the tanning of leather. Poor people would take their pot of urine to the tannery and get a few coppers. If you were so poor that you didn’t have a pot, you were snookered. It’s where the saying, ‘didn’t have a pot to piss in’ came from, meaning your finances were at low tide.
No, this is false. The term comes from the sentence "not to have a pot to piss in nor a window to throw it from". You can look it up and do the research since youtube doesn't like URLs.
@WithReeg it is. Diplomatic plates have 3 formats. 2-3 letters and a 1 (and can include the letter i like northern Irish plates) which is what this was. This was the diplomatic (flag) plate for FIJI, off the top of my head Iceland and Pakistan both use i's too. And then the 2 types are for diplomats and staff which are 3 numbers (representing the country) D for diplomats or an X for staff then 3 random letters. 123 D ABC / 123 X ABC Really cool plate spot.
Love watching these videos even though I'm from NZ and know very little about London streets haha. Have you considered doing Taxi Bingo? Within one shift, see how much of a bingo card you can fill out with taxi-related things (eg: driving on certain street names, passenger wearing yellow clothing, witnessed a dangerous maneuver, passengers with specific occupations/interesting stories, high tip etc...)
Enjoyed this. I was in London recently and took a black cab twice, just because of your great work and wanting to help out the trade. Also the skill of the driver to get me from place to place is great after watching your channel for last few years. I did Selfridges > Camden, and Chelsea > Kensington :D Great to hear you had a good 2 months off.
Welcome home Tom - Absolutely love your fascinating shift videos. As a former Metropolitan Police driver I totally agree with you that there's nothing better than getting in your vehicle, listening to some tunes (in my case it was the police sirens) and taking in the sights of London🚔
Ive only just found your channel but its already making me feel more love for the city i call my home. I live in the suburbs so generally dont get to see greater London very often, so this is very cool
Just to add on your discussion of Southwark, the name is much older than the industry. Originally the “works” were defensive works, protecting the southern side of the river crossing. It’s effectively a coincidence that the area later became industrial and home of lots of works as in factories.
0:40 I have the opposite problem. Although I came back to work in December last year and had only taken short "days in lieu" leave, Google Maps still haven't updated street view for some of my local streets. There are even instances where the pictures are at least a year out of date.
Certainly good to see you back in your taxi! I always hope you get a great fare and it all goes smoothly and your amazing knowledge of the streets makes it all go well. I also think you must have an eagle eye to see a hand raised in the London dark streets another talent of yours. Great to see you back and catch you on your next journey.
Good to see you back. Glad you had a great holiday. I’ve solo travelled, was a bit nervous at first but had a great time and met lots of fun and interesting people.
Great to see you uploading videos! I think I subscribed just after you left for your trip, and have watched all your old videos waiting. I hope you'll have some great shifts ahead of you!
So happy you’re back! I’ve been driving a lot in London and I’ve started to get familiar with the roads and drive around without satnav when I can. It’s really fun to create your own mental map
Although I very much enjoyed living your SE Asian adventures vicariously though your newsletter (every Monday morning here in Melbourne) , it's great to see you back here on TH-cam Tom!
Great to have you back Tom! Re the convo at 7:30 with the couple on south bank and a cab waiting at the rank…what’s the unwritten rule for amount of distance away you can be from a rank without breaking the cabbie code? Curious as the guy was in a wheelchair and maybe didn’t fancy the journey to the rank. Does the rank shotgun the entire street/building or is it a “can in sight” sort of deal?
Good to see you back. Love the lingo like kipper season pay the legal. I also enjoy the titbits like taxio only or can’t totes for business or the man who only sells recipes so can you do a video on more of them and the green shelters abd out unique to taxes taxiing
The fact that you didn't know where the leather market was but just casually said it must be in the leather market street area made me laugh. Welcome back Tom!
Tom - great to have you back, i always try keep my eyes out for you when im cycling round town during the week. Will find you one day im sure! I actually had a question regarding the advertisements you sometimes see on cabs - how much are they worth it to you as a cabbie? Do you even get a kick back from them and does a full body wrap pay more than a single side / doors only? Cheers
Great question! I'm hoping to make a video that deeply explores this, quick answer is that it's complicated depending on who owns the taxi and what the deal is with the firm 😊

Can you ask yFood to make the code work in EU? Seems to work only in the UK.
@TomtheTaxiDriver where did you buy your steering wheel leather cover
Him talking about his vacation while the number plate in front of him says Fiji 4:39 feels almost deliberate
This would have been the Fijian ambassador

Hence the phrase "Piss poor"

Wtf
The FIJ1 diplomatic plate was a cool spot!

Loved getting your emails while you were away in Thailand! I’ve been revising for my GCSEs so it’s nice to remember there’s still a planet out there.
Good luck w the exams

Bingo alone would be boring though, so invite some of the other youtubing cabbies?
@@Stephan-H Heck yeah. A friendly contest between the youtubing cabbies. Assuming it's a digital card, can collab with cabbies around the world.
Love to see you back in action TOM...
Please keep your videos coming... Thanks👍
Welcome back Tom. I've missed your informative videos these past 3 months. I hope your fully refreshed my friend.
Enjoyed this. I was in London recently and took a black cab twice, just because of your great work and wanting to help out the trade. Also the skill of the driver to get me from place to place is great after watching your channel for last few years.

Nice to see you back Tom. Any chance you could add the cost of the journey (as well as the mileage) to your shift videos?

15:50 I used to work at 120 Holborn, there is a steady stream of people outside Sainsbury's HQ who need cabs - not sure why

The fact that you didn't know where the leather market was but just casually said it must be in the leather market street area made me laugh. Welcome back Tom!
