    An upgrade option to wire nuts for high amp stoves or ovens are insulated tap connectors, like Polaris or Morris brands. More heat resistant and contains gel for corrosion resistance. Good for larger 6/3, 8/3 wire.

      Just make sure the hole isn't oversized, or the weight of the cooktop will crack if it's supported only by the glass. If the hole is oversized then you need install something called a hudee ring.
      My Frigidaire cooktop recommended a Granite Countertop Installation Kit (903061-9010) that is 6 brackets and a tube of RTV silicone sealant. What's interesting is that the brackets don't actually support the cooktop but just help center it, and nowhere in the installation instructions does it mention using sealant.

  • @RJSoftware2000
    @RJSoftware2000 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Some pointers. First always test appliance to make sure you turned off correct breaker. You did not address that the breaker should have been two pole double throw. You dont know what kind of rigged situation your dealing with. As already mentioned a voltage sensor is needed for safety. Inductions are good but not as reliable as direct probe. Also note you can get shocked on a neutral depending on prior loads on circuit.An improvement to this situation would be a disconnect or cord plug arrangement. Then you can disconnect with confidence.

    • @nickyjames1430
      @nickyjames1430 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wouldn't. The new cooktop comes with a new armored flex cable already connected correctly to the terminals inside the cooktop. You still have to connect this flex cable to the incoming power in the wall box. If your oven is blocking access to the wall box it may be easier to pull the oven partly or completely out of the way to get some room to work. You might be able to work through the countertop opening to connect your wires. By the way, never trust that the breaker killed the power. Always verify all wires are dead with a voltmeter or a non contact voltage tester-I use both and test them on a live circuit first. Better safe than sorry!

      Also, what is the voltage of the cooktop? 110V or 220V ??? There are both kinds out there. Is the red wire the common, or the hot? Black should be the hot wire (black to brass, white to silver when you do an outlet). Which is which? Follow the wiring of the old cookbook, I guess. This is when you trip the main breaker to the house and use bright flashlights and a volt meter to be safe.

    @ 8:09, "You want to twist the wires to make sure they're not frayed."
    You should have told folks to twist those wires CLOCKWISE. If you don't the twists will come undone when you connect them to the power source with the wire nuts, creating a poor connection. All the electrical tape in the world can't fix this.
    No, I'm not an electrician. I'm just an old bag that has learned to do a few things for myself. I do have almost 30 years experience as an electronic technician and I can tell you that the devil is in the details.
    You also forgot to add the really fun part. Before you use up the last of your electrical tape, you go down to the basement and cut the breaker on. Go back up stairs and cut on all of stove eyes,etc, and make sure everything works. Trek back down stairs, cut the breaker off. Huff & puff back up stairs and finish the job. Holding tightly to the stair rail, slowly descend the stairs one more time to cut the breaker back on. Now, sit on the bottom stair until the staircase no longer resembles Mt. Everest. Once your determination has returned and you have once more reached the summit, head for the nearest recliner. You can add finishing touches and put tools up later. Never let an incomplete job get in the way of a good nap.
    Now wasn't that fun? You can console yourself with the fact that there were no ladders involved.

      Did you ever figure this out?

    • @talosian
      @talosian ปีที่แล้ว

      The new stove should have a black wire, you need to look harder for it. Without it, you only get 120 V and that would be a really crappy stove.

      @@Idahopainter "can you just replace the broken glass?" Is what they meant. But that's a question for an appliance tech q, and yes is the correct answer.

    is it 110volt or 220 volt?

    • @mufumu1
      @mufumu1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is 220v. Red and black wires have 110v each.

    What if you have an oven range and want to install a cooktop?

    • @j.w.8663
      @j.w.8663 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes please. I want to know that too. Can I parallel the cooktop in with the oven? -- since I know that the current rating for both is still sufficient on a 40A breaker.

    wow... I came here looking for a tip how to install retainer bracket on granite countertop just to hear that I have to install them when I need them and when they are required.... Well... They ARE required and I think you know that. I guess that's just "not your favorite part of cooktop installation". Great vid otherwise. Peace!

    Hey, I just saw your video above. What did you do with the white wire. I've got three wires coming from the wall (main) which have a black, red and white along with the ground, but the stove top only has the black and red with ground... please advise. Thanks.

    • @adamaly9375
      @adamaly9375 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      you dont need to use the white wire. The white wire is neutral it works with some appliances. But for a 220 cooktop all you need is the 2 live wires red and black

    • @talosian
      @talosian ปีที่แล้ว

      @@adamaly9375 Very wrong. Connect the stove's ground wire to the feed's white wire.
