- Learn how to install a gas stove top. This quick gas cooktop installation video takes you from start to finish. Most gas cooktop installations are really simple and easy. If you are installing it yourself, you need to understand the steps required to to properly install the stove top. Check out our video and learn how to install a gas stove top.
We use natural gas at our homestead. Our existing gas cooktop was showing its age so I received a new one for Christmas.
I have installed gas appliances for about 30 years. In most locations, a homeowner can legally perform a gas cooktop installation. However, check your local laws because some municipalities require professional installation. Also, always install with a new flex hose. You'll notice that I left my old flex hose connected to the old stove top. For every device that I install, I always use a new flex hose.

Put the regulator and hose on the stove first before you drop the stove in, and you won't have to crawl under the counter and try to tighten the fittings. If you noticed when the old stove was removed the gas line and regulator were attached and removed without disconnecting. Just do this in reverse and save yourself some aches and pains. Plus you can make sure fittings are tightened properly and avoid damage easier.

I realize in the future it is easier to install the pipes attached to the stove before install and then have only the one gas to stove pipe connection to make once it’s in place. Very informative video.
Definitely you can install them before you set the stovetop in place. It probably would be easier. My only advice would be to protect the stovetop surface when you turn it over.
Great video! You gave us just the right amount of detail to make this job doable. I am a woman renovating my entire house by myself (not an easy task), as I just don't have the money to hire people to help. This was a huge help, I was able to install a new Lowe's gas cooktop by myself, and I'm not even handy! The critical parts are using two wrenches to loosen/tighten the gas hoses, and using the thread sealant on the hose connectors.

Probably easier to screw on the adapter to the regulator and then the both to the cooktop. It would tighten both at the same time and you could use a deep socket . Just a suggestion. Of course I would also install everything but the gas hose while STANDING up in the kitchen but that's all preference.
Great video. I have an issue with my new cooktop. it's gas and it's about one inch too tall compared to the my old one... I have 3.2 inches clearance in height and the one I got is 4.12 inches...
I already looked for other ones but are all very tall expect for the older one I own... any suggestions on how to make the new one fit?

Omgosh! That's awesome. And not too complicated . I'm renting the gas cook top is disgusting and rusted up! But I doubt if my Landlord will replace it.
Just a warning: putting pipe dope on the flared connector, even if you keep the tip super clean, may make the connection fail because it's not driving enough force into the flared mating surfaces. I followed the instructions above and twice, with two new kits, I had a leak too small to see with the bubbles but could smell it the next morning. A third try with no dope on the FIT threads and it's working 100%. It might also be in your local plumbing code to not do this.
Hi. I have honestly never had a failed connection or any leaks when using pipe dope on the threads of a flare. I don’t plumb for a living but just in my home alone over the years with initial installations and replacements, I’ve probably installed 20 different gas appliances. Add in the work I’ve done for family members and friends, I can’t count how many I’ve installed and never had any issues. I was taught to do this probably 30 years ago. Since some folks were making comments like yourself, I did checkout some plumbing forums. It’s a mixed bag….some master plumbers do use pipe dope on flare threads while some are against it completely. I’ll keep using pipe dope on flare threads but I’m not against someone that doesn’t use it. Thanks for sharing your comment.
Thank you for being so thorough and easy to understand. I think you have a GECAfe like mine, be forewarned that the knobs are plastic and the chrome paint wears off. Replacement knob are about $300 which is outrageous for plastic.
Hi. Mine is a Monogram which is basically a high end GE. It has metal knobs. I know exactly what you are saying about the plastic knobs. I melted several on my last stovetop which was a GE. So aggravating because some bonehead at GE thinks that it’s ok to put plastic near a 1000 deg flame.

Good video! Havent installed mine yet but this will help. My cooktop calls to put down heat tape and foam tape around opening wondering if yours did and you chose not to? Also how tight should I make on the connections? Looks like you put alot into it. Thank You.
Hi. Mine didn’t come with any heat or foam tape. It had some metal straps to anchor it but my cutout is so close that I didn’t need to anchor it. I get the connections decently tight but I don’t go overboard. You using some big wrenches during this type of install so they have lots of torque.

Great video. One of my gas burner pressure is low. Don't know if I need to change the regulator or replace the gas cooktop. Your video give me an idea what I need to do if I need to replace everything. I have a question though, in the video you also connect the gas top to a power supply. Excuse me for my ignorance, but I am wondering why do you need to connect the appliance to the power supply if it is a gas cooktop?
Hi. Thanks! The purpose of power supply is mainly for the piezo ignition. I have also noticed that my knobs are also lit when turned on. You never really notice until the power is out and you want to cook some dinner. If this happens it will definitely light with a match.
BTW It's a lot easier to put the regulator on before you place the stove top in the cut out.

Hi. Thanks! There was some straps that was provided with stove top to keep it from moving. I haven't put them on because the stove top fit really snug in the cutout.

Thanks for the video. I am in the process of replacing an older dacor cooktop. It seems, at least based on my experience, the weak link on these horizontal cooktops are the knobs. That is why I am replacing my cooktop--replacing the knobs will cost me about $200.00 since they don't make them anymore for my model.
The knobs have to be pulled almost everytime you use the cooktop to clean up grease splatter. On my dacor, the attachment was plastic which failed over time. I think I have replaced the knobs about 4 times over the life of the current cooktop.
I would be curious how your GE Monogram cooktop has held up, and if the knobs have proven to be durable.
Hi. I have had your experience with knobs on previous stovetops. The stove top in the video is going strong. We have cooked on it so much that the emblem is gone but the metal knobs have been awesome.
Do those stove tops just plug into a regular 120v outlet?

Hi. Thanks! Yes, it’s just a 120 plug. If the power went out you can still light it with a match or lighter.

Hi. Those are 15/16 or 1”. You could use two large crescent wrenches.
this subject brings up a few things that I would like to comment.
1. Electric stove’s require a 220 outlet. almost all homes that were built with a gas range do not have this 220 outlet behind it, and the electrical boxes do not have the space for an additional 220 outlet to be put in the breaker box. Requiring this change would be very expensive or impassable to add and run the electrical wiring.
2. requiring ventilation that ducks “outside” is a necessary law! New homes are being built with recirculating vent hoods even though the hood is on an exterior wall! This practice is a purely a time-saving practice as the expense to vent thru the wall is minimal in most cases.
3. I live in an old house, my hood vents to the outside, and when I turn on my oven my smoke alarm goes off if I do not turn on the hood. Regulation is needed to require Gas appliances to not emit toxins when off and burn cleaner when on.
4. Turning to Dual Fuel Ranges would greatly reduce the number of toxins in the air: this type of range uses gas for the burners only (greatly reducing the number of toxins) because the oven is heated by electricity. I like dual fuel because if one utility is out (power) you can still cook with gas. Electric ovens with “convection” saves energy as items cook faster by recirculating hot air.
5. In closing I am glad to see that we are taking a closer look at regulating gas emissions in the home all gas appliances could emit less than they do right now. It takes Regulation to force the appliance industry to make their products safer for the consumer. Have you looked into gas furnace emissions as well?
Hi. Good thoughts! On #2, I think it’s just simple laziness by builders to not install a ventilation to outside in the kitchen no matter what the stove type. When food is boiled or fried, ventilation to the outside should be required. A filter and then vent back into the kitchen just doesn’t work well in my opinion.
On #3, I can only get my smoke detector to go off if I turn all of the eyes on high and let it run for about 5 minutes. It happened when I first installed the stovetop. The alarm alerted because of heat and not emitted toxins. I would like an honest non-biased investigation into what really emitted from gas stoves. If the government is paying for a study, there is probably a bias by those performing and those paying for said study.
On #4, this is exactly how my house is setup. I have a gas cooktop and electric wall oven. I live in rural Alabama, I set/built my entire house up to live for extended periods without electricity. I have a gas hot water heater, gas stovetop, gas dryer, and gas furnace. When the tornados tore up Alabama in 2011, the setup worked perfectly for the week that we were out of power. We could take hot showers, dry clothes (only needed a small generator to spin the drum), and finally we could cook.
On #5, again I want to see to real unbiased study before I get concerned about gas stove emissions because I know for a fact that today’s appliances are way more efficient than what my grandparents used. The grandmother had three (really old) natural gas space heaters in her tiny house that was unvented and a gas stove. She lived to be 81 and didn’t die of cancer. My gas furnace is outside and vents directly to atmosphere. One final thought, I find it hard to believe that regulations for specific emissions don’t already exist for natural gas appliances or any appliances. I would bet they already exist.
As I've been watching all kinds of these installations No one is anchoring the unit to the countertop Also I am a firm believer in using all new fittings and flex hose for any new gas appliances
Hi. My cutout is so tight that I didn’t need to anchor the stovetop. If I really try, I can make it move about 1/16”. I agree with the new hardware.

Do you have to measure the countertop space opening or can you just measure the old stove top when you are looking to replace the top? How off will the measurement really be? This was great by the way and the top is gorgeous
Hi. Thanks! It’s a great stove top. The stove top that I purchased called for the exact measurements as the old one that I owned. It’s mainly because they were made by the same manufacturer. I took a GE out and replaced it with a Monogram built by GE. Different manufacturers do have different opening requirements. You can always have someone resize the opening. I didn’t want to do that which is why I searched for something that would fit the opening.
You did not say anything about how to convert NG/LPG. How do I do that?
What is the purpose of the regulator? Is it required? My stove doesn’t have one.

Very nicely done. A question, however. Why didn't you install the regulator and hookup before inserting the cooktop to the counter cutout, would've been way easier to do it on the table/counter than going under the counter?
Hi. Thanks! My main goal when installing a cooktop is to not scratch the surface. You can definitely place on the regulator and pipe before placing the cooktop. Just be careful not to scratch the surface.
If I currently have 4 burners could I go up to a middle one ? Also all my knobs are in the front but I’ve seen some that have the knobs on the side.
Hi. Measure your current stove top and the counter top opening. Look for cooktops that match the size of your current cooktop or opening. I looked around for a while before I found one that fit my countertop opening.
Why no foil tape? When I pulled mine out from corian countertaps it had foil tape. I had quartz countertops installed. Do I need foil tape? I've read elsewhere that repeated heating and cooling will crack quartz without the foil tape. Thanks.
Over the years I had different types of countertops. I’ve never used foil tape. The granite countertops in my house are now about 7 years old. I’ve never had issues with cracking. Quartz may be a completely different animal. Also, I really don’t notice the areas around the stovetop getting really hot.
Does the regulator have to be placed on the stove on the right hand side of the cooktop (where you placed it)? Or can it be placed on the other end of the flex hose which is near the floor? I ask this because I don't have room in the cabinet under the stove on that right hand side. I, not only have a side panel of a cabinet there, but I also have a drawer directly under the stove that I won't be able to use. Thank you!
Hi. Your question peaked my interest because I thought it would be ok but I just have never done this. I check a few websites and it looks like the answer is yes you can move it. The folks that provided pictures used black pipe and elbows to get it where they wanted it. They still had the flex connecting up to the hard pipe. I think the main reason for this is to give the regulator something substantial to connect to. I could also see the flex working as long as you make certain to secure to regulator.
That was my exact question also. Does the regular had to be up top by the cooktop or can it be at the bottom where the pipe comes out of the ground. Because I would like to put at the bottom because if I put it at the top it will hit the door that’s below it.

I noticed you didn't use any flex tape or silicone around the cooktop. Does that not lead to water leaking under the cooktop, through the cutout?
That is a problem we're having with our cooktop, even though flex tape has seemingly been used. I'm considering further sealing the sides with silicone and would be glad to hear your opinion!
Hi. Sorry I just saw your comment and question. You could definitely seal it with RTV silicone. it’s temp rated up to around 500 deg F.
The reason I didn’t use any around my stove is because I use vinegar with paper towels to clean the stove and around it so I rarely get any water around the stove. The stove in the video and the one ☝️ had previously are both deep welled in case of something boiling over.

Hi. I ordered it through a locally owned appliance store here in North Alabama. The monogram which is basically a high end GE brand. Honestly it's been worth the extra money. The cast iron grill is awesome and we use it about once or twice a week when making pancakes or french toast.

Is it acceptable and safe to install the regulator at the other end of the flex hose? My new stove has a protuberance right next to the inflow that does not allow the regulator to fit there.
Make sure you get the flow direction correct and that will be fine.
I want to put the regulator down by the bottom by the ground. Did that work for you?
*I have an electric stove....under the counter top is a pvc pipe going into the floor with some foil covering it...I tried to look at it and I see little sand there...not sure what it is for....I want to convert the electric...how do I go about this? Any tips?*
Adi Yogi. If it’s a small pipe, it almost sounds like the conduit for the electrical wire. As far as conversion, you will need a gas “drop” plumbed in and you will need a 120v electrical plug in for the ignition of the stove eyes. If your house has natural gas ran to it from the gas supplier, use that because you can pay for usage and not have to remember to get your propane tank filled. Otherwise, propane will work fine also.
I'm guessing there's a vent hood above? If you had to move the stove top to an island, how would you do that? You would have to get one with a down draft and cut through the floor to make room for a vent right? Would you need to do that for a conductive stove top or an electric stove top?
Check local building codes. They vary in terms of specific requirements for cooktop venting.
Is there any reason you didn't install the regulator and flex hole before dropping the cooktop in place? Is there anything to clamp down the cooktop to keep it from sliding on the countertop?
Hi. You can definitely connect the regulator and pipe before you install it into the cutout. My only advice is to be careful not to scratch the surface when you have it setting upside down. About the brackets, stovetops will come with them. My cutout is so precise that my stovetop only moves about 1/16” so I didn’t install them.
Do all 5 ignitors have to turn on to turn 1 burner on?
Hi. No. You just turn on whichever burner you want on. You will see igniter spark on all but only the one you turned on will light.
We are converting from an induction cooktop to gas. I have a gas fitter. But the old induction one was hardwired. Are all gas cooktops just a regular 120v plug? Or do some use the hardwire for ignition system? Thanks in advance
Hi. When I was researching for the cooktop shown in the video, most all had the 120v plug. The 120v is just for the ignition and the lighter knobs. It really has no other function. My cabinet had a outlet in place from when I built the house. I wired the house so I knew exactly where I wanted outlets. If you have 120v hardwired, you could place a surface mount outlet box and outlet up under the cabinet using the existing wire. If you are inexperienced with wiring, I would recommend to have an electrician check it and see if it could be done properly.

Did you happen to install Six (6) brackets that supposedy hold the cooktop in place? the installer put in two (2) of them, one on left and one on the right sides but not the other four (4). Im assuming they went on the front and back to keep the unit from push around in the hole and getting cock-eyed (happened when I cleaned it the first time so I didnt notice till he left. I mean damn if the install is as easy as you make it look this guy sure f'd mine up.
Hi. I didn’t need the brackets because mine was a very snug fit and doesn’t move hardly at all. Since you paid someone, they should have put on at least 4 of the brackets. It’s not going to hurt it to push it back in place when you clean it of course.

What if you don't have an outlet conveniently there, but instead an old metal box? Can that power source be used in some way?
Hi. If it’s a 120v source, the answer would be yes. An electrician should be able to set you up.
Hi. I am trying to install our new cooktop but while it fits the space when the regulator is unattached, once I attach the regulator it does not fit. Can I install the regulator just after the cooktop shut off valve and will it still work safely and effectively? It couldn't be more than 5-6 feet additional distance for the gas to travel through the flex hose.
Hi. I can’t see a reason why you couldn’t move it. If I was going to do this, I agree with you on installing the regulator after the cutoff coming from the supply (not before the cutoff). Depending on the connection between the regulator and the cooktop, you may have to purchase a couple of additional fittings (probably a coupler or two) to make this work but it’s definitely worth a try. Once you get it installed turn everything on an see if it holds a good burn on all the eyes. BTW the thumbnail pic on our video set off my fire alarm 😳 🤣 because I had turned all the eyes on full blast. Just a note, it may take a few more seconds to bleed the air out of the lines connecting it up this way.
Hi llewimidas. Did you put the pressure regulator down by the floor or up top by the cooktop. Because I want to do the same by putting the regulator down by the floor because I don’t have enough space up top because of a drawer.
Seems you could install the reg before it goes in? Any gotchas besides accidentally breaking it off?
Hi. I don’t see anything wrong with installing the regulator first. That shouldn’t be an issue.

Hi. Yes, I don’t see a reason you couldn’t place it near your cutoff. Just make certain that you arrow for the gas flow is correct.

Hi. Yes, the manufacturer specs and install manual will give you the dimensions and the rough opening you will need cut. Since I was replacing my old cook top, I measured my existing rough opening and then started looking for the replacement. Also, there are folks that will cut granite to enlarge the opening.
I just bought the same stovetop on clearance....hehehe. I am replacing an existing stovetop. Can re-use the existing flex hose or do I need a new one?

I probably don’t want to know what kind of deal you got when buying it on clearance. 🥺. You can use the existing but I always purchase a new one. Mainly because my stovetops are usually about 10 years old when I swap them out.
Is it ok to reuse all the connectors and flex pipe from the old stove?
Hi. I always purchase new just because I like to have a new flex hose and it’s a personal preference. Mechanically there is no reason why the old hose shouldn’t work because the flare is metal to metal. There is also no rubber O ring to degrade. I would just make sure the fittings are cleaned and get any old pipe dope or teflon tape off the fitting. Good question!
Some new cooktops require a new flex hose in order for the warranty to take in effect.
How long do we wait to test it with water and soap? Does the sealer dry quickly ?
Hi. The pipe dope does not dry so once you have the lines on and tightened, you can turn the gas on and check it immediately.

I think for gas pipe dope is better. If using tape I think you have to use a tape that’s certified for gas.

Would this also apply to propane gas lines?
Hi. Yes, the same would apply to propane. You should either purchase the stovetop already setup for propane or make sure you have the correct orffices for propane.
Did you use a new gas line or reuse the existing?

Hi. I didn’t show it in the video because I didn’t use any straps. It’s just sitting in the hole. The guy that cut my opening was really good and my stove literally won’t move more that 1/8”. These cooktops do come with a few straps for anchoring them to the cabinet or countertop.
What about the brackets?
Does the pipe sealant make it almost impossible to take it off in the future
Hi. No the sealant doesn’t harden so it will not be hard to removed a part later.

My stove top didn't come with a regulator does that mean i don't needed, says it has thermocouple protection is that same thing???
Hi. Those are not the same. Check the manual to see it it has some type of internal regulator. Also determine if the installation manual is showing a regulator. It could have been left out of the box at the factory.

where is the gas supply positioned? We have gas tanks but I wonder where I should hide it
Hi. Sounds like you have a propane tank. If the stove top is the only gas appliance, I would position it outside the house close to the kitchen area.
Can these be attached to a propane tank and function?
Hi. The will not work properly without changing orfices. The manufacturer does make them in a propane version. If you are wanting to convert from natural gas to propane, you’ll need to change the orfices.

Hi. It’s a Monogram brand which is just a higher end GE. My other cooktop was a GE and this one fit perfectly in the opening.

Why were nipple and regulator installed under cooktop when it is 100 times easier to do before dropping in hole . Also why were hold down clips not used?
The cutout is so tight that I didn’t need the clips. I also like being able to slightly lift up the cooktop edges to clean. You can install the fittings with the cooktop upside down just be careful not to scratch the surface. It’s easier that way but I always installed them with specific requirements of no scratches. Definitely easier but maybe 10 times not 100 times 😂
@useful.knowledge if you open then box and take out grills and flame caps you can flip box over open from the bottom with cook top still in wrapping and Styrofoam caps and install nipple and regulater with out laying cooktop on face and scratching. Code here requires they be clipped down and secured we run a fine bead of bacteria guard silicone caulk around out side edges so no liquid can get under them.
But my question is why you didn't install everything before you put the cook top on the counter than you cennect the gas line on the end
Hi. You can definitely do that. We just always set them in place to ensure the top did not get scratched.
Why not put Regulator and fittings on before inserting the stove ?

I got the qb5903 and the flames are very low for all 5..but they r very hot.....is that normal..or are they suppose to be high flame...
Hi. I agree the flames seem lower on the newer stove tops but they cook like crazy. The picture on the thumbnail actually set off my fire alarm in the kitchen due to heat. I had all eyes on running on high.
@@useful.knowledge did yours come with its own regulator or did you have to buy your own?.cus mine didnt and i had to attach one from my previous cooktop which has a lower psi and had to get an adapter for it...so its bein a pain in the ass with the actual regular that fits right.
Mine did come with a regulator. You may want to do some research and see what is the recommended psi for the QB5903. I’ll look under there tonight and see what psi it’s set for.
@@useful.knowledge for mine since its NG its 2000...but the regulator im using for it at the moment with an adapter is only 1500 so its not fully going.
