- Today on Culturalist Theory we are ranking legendary label Roc-a-Fella Records albums from worst to first. This list will not include Jay Z or Kanye albums since they have their own episodes on the channel! We are also not including compilations or soundtracks. We'll save those for another list.

This is such a cool channel for Hip Hop heads, much respect! Purple Tape would be my personal #1...unless A Son Unique would be eligible, but Roc-a-Fella shelved it unfortunately. Dope shirt btw, that Alchemist x Larry June album is one of the best from 2023 imo
Roc a Fella Records was on top of the world during their prime. Especially when The Blueprint album came out 💯

Beanie Sigel's The B. Coming WAS released under Roc-A-Fella. It was a joint venture release because DDMG was still under the Roc-A-Fella brand. As a former NYC DJ who was serviced this record, and it's accompanying singles, by both Damon Dash Music Group (Times Square office) and Roc-A-Fella, I can confirm this is still considered a Roc-A-Fella release.
I think that was a mistake. My vinyl has Roc-A-Fella on it but the CD is DDMG and Def Jam. I understand why he didn't put it on the list. I wouldn't count it either.
@@lasonjittle7498 it wasn't a mistake. The entire album was recorded long before DDMG was even formed.
@lasonjittle7498 plus Roc-A-Fella was servicing the singles and the album to us DJs themselves.
@lasonjittle7498 the only reason why it didn't have the Roc-A-Fella logo on it was because it was a joint venture deal.

Incredible video 🙌🏾 Dipset went to the ROC and put work in. I always thought HeatMakers were just as good as Kanye/Jus if not better. Their drums were ridiculous! 🔥 To this day DJ Enuff freestyle is my favorite beat from that era

This list brought tears to my eyes. All of these albums were soundtracks all through my high school😢. I still have The Reason over Philadelphia Freeway but other than that this list is very accurate

21:55 Jim Jones & Juelz Santana originally did a song to the I Really Mean It beat before Cam'ron took it over. In September 2011, Just Blaze said “Anyway, it sat around for about a year. Cam, Jim and Juelz came to the studio one night, and they wanted to work. I hadn't seen them in a while, but they were like, 'What you got?' I didn't have anything that I had made for them specifically, but I had some old stuff and got them that. Cam left and Jim and Juelz did a record to it. I played a little bit of it two years ago on Shade 45. It was those two going back and forth, one of the first records where Jim really started rapping. Cam wasn't even on the record. He came in the next day and heard it and was like, 'Oh, nah, nah, nah. I'm taking this.' The whole beef with Nas had just started to pop off. It ended up being a Nas diss record to a certain degree. That bothered me a little bit, but the record was crazy. The record came out on a Funkmaster Flex mixtape, which is why you hear Jim say, 'Flex I got you.' Nas and Flex had beef a little bit at the time, so they were riding with Flex. On Flex's mixtape, it's actually playing too slow. If you listen to both of them, there's a pretty significant change. It irks me to this day, because every once in a while I come across somebody playing it off the Flex tape.”
Roc a fella wasn’t my cup of tea but my favorite album from that label was Philadelphia Freeway

Very good list. I skipoed most those Roc projects in the mid to late teens here, but the top 10's pretty acurrate imo. I'd just flip flop "Free At Last" by Freeway at 11 with Bleek at number 9. "Free At Last" had shitty promotion, and got lost in the Roc-A-Fella break up/reshuffling, but there's so many dope songs on that project.
Aside from that, I'd put "Philadelphia Freeway" at number 2 behind "Come Home With Me," because I love tgat album. Dont think its quite a classic, but its very close.
As far as Twista, I regard that album as an unofficial Roc-A-Della album. It would be third on my list.

Besides Jay, Beanie Sigel is my favorite MC of the Roc-a-Fella Camp.
When I saw the wild and catchy music video,"Beanie (Mack B---h)" and "The Truth" on BET's Rap City, I knew I had to buy The Reason and The Truth albums. :)
In my opinion, his first two album should have been in that top 5. Sigels first 3 albums are classics

3:33 The beat from Alright was originally for Jay-Z. 9th Wonder, who produced the song, said “I wasn’t with Bleek in the studio during those records. That was the internet. I sent them joints and that’s something that Guru recorded. But Jay-Z wanted me to do six songs off that album. Memphis Bleek played ‘Alright,’ which I produced, for Jay and he was like, ‘You need to let [9th] do half your album, dawg.’"

Amil ft Bey was nice(video included). You're right about 1999 Bleek n Ja being similar (I still say that). The Truth is overrated (amazing title Song). The Reason (aged like fine wine) is underrated. Juelz Santana snapped on Santana Town(Dip Set Dip Set)🦄🦩💓that video
I can't agree with the reason, because a majority of his rhymes he spat on that hot 97 mixtape prior. The Truth was far from overrated. Mac & Brad, Die, Stop, Chill, Who Want What, Raw & Uncut were solid joints
@@justincollins3874 everyone gave Beans first album a chance. He received high ratings from the source magazine. I'm not feeling it like that. The Reason album grew on me over the years. The Source should've gave that 4.5(not the Truth)

I didn't know Roc -a-Fella Records released that many albums without Jay-Z and Kanye not being on this list but I think every artist did their thing even if they didn't stay with the company long. And on a side note I have a you tube channel type in Russell Mills May 22, 2017 to find me.

Im confused. The list was said to exclude group albums so no State Property but you had The Diplomats and Young Gunz. I dont get it.

I had to go back and listen to that young gunz second album brothers from another and I remember it was just as bad then as it is now. It sounds like one of those CDs that an artist makes before they leave the label to make the labels obligation. It’s really really bad.

Great list, Roc A Fella my all time favorite label. I'm in the minority when it comes to Memphis Bleek 534, I love that album. I feel Dipset was the best non Hov non Ye album on the ROC

Man I swear me and my boys were just trying to do this at a cookout earlier but we said we could only use one jayz album and our top 5 came out as 1 The Blueprint ,2 the college dropout , 3 Philadelphia Freeway : which is heavily underrated the Roc had a signature sound and that album signified that , 4 come home with me , 5 was a tie between bleek the understanding & the truth by beans , we had a lot more on the list but that was our top 5

OMDG!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Killa Cam ran Roc. I know Hov was jealous af. Blleek wasn't s*&&. His albums are worse than Criston, AMIL, etc. What made me mad is when Hov took Twista's vocals off of Is That Yo B&&&& and gave the song to Bleek. Bleek ruined that Timbaland beat. I swear.
