Keep practicing and don't quit if you're in a school orchestra. I quit after 9th grade (1971), and I was in the 1st seat. I picked it back up in the last 2 yrs. and I'm 56 yrs. old now. If I never quit, I'd be much better than an intermediate player right now. Just find some music that you like and keep playing everyday, even if it's only 15-20 mins. I like playing from Mel Bay's Complete Fiddling Book which has over 300 songs. I had trouble at first, but now and can play most of the songs.

What you said about bow distribution is so great! I've always wondered how violinist decided when to change the direction of the bow. Using the length of the notes to decide the length of the bow stroke is so genius, it's just math really! I am officially amazed.
actually most pieces have slur markings that tell the players when to change bow / how many notes are to be played in one bow. but of course you are pretty much free to alter the bowings depending on what you're comfortable with

@Kraizerr In this case, playing an open E would make that note pop out too brightly in this context. The tempo is relatively slow, and the phrase will sound more uniform in tone color by staying on the A string and using 4th finger.

after 9 long years of being without a violin, this christmas, i may be getting one, playing the violin has been a life long dream since the day i first heard a violin play. When i entered 5th grade i had the opportunity to play one for school, i jumped on it with no second thought, and it was the best decision in my life. in Six grade i was in Orchestra, we played at a highschool in Olean, NY for the highschoolers and parents and channel 6 news. if was a life fulfilling feeling.

GRiiM I can't believe your attempting to do vibrato already. I won't attempt vibrato until I'm maybe a year and a half of playing, maybe even longer. I started off learning my open strings and getting comfortable, learning to bow correctly, and then moving on to more difficult pieces of music. have you got a teacher? maybe that might help?
+Kimmy nonono, i'm not trying to do vibrato, i just know how difficult it is, i never liked teachers, and i play music for myself you know? i do it just cause i like it and nothing else, i learned to play piano and guitar myself, i had a piano teacher, but just for like, 4 hours total, it was too slow and boring, learning my yourself is more comfortable, and at least for me, faster

What do you mean the lenght?
