Your reaction to no blue covers Charlotte 😂. It was definitely a surprising list going from everyone’s predictions but I kind of love that I’d heard of so few. I’m not immediately drawn to any in particular and only have access to three anyway but I’ll be interested to see people’s thoughts to see if a lot of these are more appealing than their blurbs make them sound.
I never thought I would see a book from my country, Venezuela, in one of these prices! So happy for this and for Gabriella Weiner, I read her books a year or so ago and felt like a booker book very much. Love all the LATAM rep!
Also loving all the LATAM rep, Charco Press is a publishing house you could check out, they publish so many amazing LATAM authors and I've discovered some new favourites through that publishing house 😁
Haha fun to watch as always. Least the non fic WP had a Fitz 😉Think I am going to try Not A River even more excited knowing you loved the authors previous work.
Andrej Kurkov is not Russian! Take that back 😆 He just writes in Russian. He's from Ukraine. His books have been banned in Russia for a decade. I'm surprised you didn't recognise the name as he was on last year's longlist too. I think there's an unspoken rule that says all his books need to be nominated for something or other. He is probably best known (outside of Ukraine) for "Death and the Penguin".
Oh! Thanks for explaining that! I just googled his name and it said he was born near St Petersburg.... So assumed that meant he was Russian! 😁 Also, his book last year was one of the ones that I completely missed when reading the longlist last year because it was published so much later than when the main prize reading was taking place.
I read four books: Kairos that I l.iked it, Crooked Plow that it was a surprise for me due to the empowered female characters and the way that colonialism and slavery is portayed. I read also The house on via Gewmito about toxic masculinity and abou the importance of art. And finally I read The details that I love a lot, it's my favorite fo the books that I read of the long-list
I initially thought your reaction to the no fitz books, was because there were no more books and you were disappointed the longlist wasn't longer... Which I can relate to every time I watch a prize longlist video. Happy reading, hope a few of those books not on kindle sort out their stuff quickly. I can get Crooked Plough on Kobo, so hopefully that get sorted for you.
So nice to see your excitement and anticipation for this longlist! I don't have any desire to read most of these with the exception of "Crooked Plow" and "Not a River," so I'll be interested to hear what others think of these titles after they've read them!
Your excitement is infectious, Charlotte! I also thought it was a pretty great list. I'm already pretty sure I'll love Selva Almada - Bricklayers especially sounds so amazing.
I think your comment about access to digital versions is important - this is supposed to be an International prize (despite the fact that the Booker is also international 🙄) so I wonder if it would be possible for something like the Booker prize to fund the digital publication of their longlist when the titles they choose are from very small presses? There will be lots of readers around the world in the same situation as you.
Great point! You would've thought! I know there are rules around how many copies publishers must make available for people to buy, but I don't know of any rules around digital content, which would be helpful for readers around the world.
Love your enthusiasm for the list! I am trying to keep an open mind about the list but I have to say some of the titles received poor overall ratings on Goodreads; of course this doesn't necessarily mean that I won't enjoy them but it is giving me pause. I think I will try to get available titles from my library rather than invest in buying them. Looking forward to hearing your reaction to the books once you've read them.
I really love this list 🎉🎉🎉 I have read 2 of the books - “The Details” and the “Crooked Plow” and have read another author - Domenico Starnone. I even have met in person Jenberg. So amazing. Hope sooner we will have more of the books in Bulgarian.
@@charlottemolloy loved both! Give the “Details” a second chance. As for Itamar Vieira - I am a huge fan of Brazilian literature and picked it immediately once I saw it in the bookstore. We have it for like 3 years in Bulgaria and his new novel is being translated at this very moment.
It’s a great list! I’m starting with Undiscovered by Gabriela Weiner. See how many more I can get through before the shortlist is announced! Thanks for a great video and getting behind this prize, also one of my favourites!
Having now read the blurb of Undiscovered it's now my priority read too from the list! Giving When We Cease to Understand the World vibes with its blend of fact and fiction 😍
Can you please mention tell me the publishing houses that you like for translated fiction? I was having trouble understanding the ones that you mentioned. Thank you.
You know more than I did. For half of it I was drawing a blank. Maybe because of the upset of no Ædnan. I started The Details yesterday but haven't had time to read up on the books yet.
Not super excited, but not super disappointed. Had only read nine eligible books beforehand and The Details was the only one that came up on the longlist. I liked The Details, it was well written, but it is not memorable. Out the remainder I had already planned to read The House on Via Gemito and Not a River. I may read Crooked Plow if it is shortlisted. Lost on Me I think was on the FT summer reads last year, it is the sort of book I might pick up for WIT.
Solid list! I’m most looking forward to reading Not a River, Kairos and Simpatia. I’m also intrigued by A Dictator Calls and Undiscovered.

Ooo great! Then I'll have someone to talk about it with! 😍

@@charlottemolloy Yes, I hate it when book prizes do that. I think the eligibility period should just run up to the announcement date 😒
Your enthusiasm is infectious! The one I’m most interested in reading is Not a River, which comes out in May in Canada.

Yes Crooked plough I can now get, just the one by a tiny press might be impossible.

There’s no Tilted AxisPress either, I believe. No African lit or Japanese either. Still looks like a good list.
You are definitely more excited for this than me 😂
On the plus side I am currently reading Crooked Plow, so that’s one in the bank!
Is Crooked Plow good?
@@charlottemolloy I’m not sure yet…
Your excitement is infectious, Charlotte! I also thought it was a pretty great list. I'm already pretty sure I'll love Selva Almada - Bricklayers especially sounds so amazing.
I too was shocked by the lack of blue covers. I may start with "The Details" to get my Nordic fix. Thank you as always for such a wonderful video.

Charlotte!!!
Appreciate the video 📖 🪱 💚
Hey mate! 💚😁

The two I mentioned were Charco Press & Fitzcarraldo Editions 😁

Yes Im with you on the Aednan disappointment! I finished it a few days ago in anticipation of it being longlisted!
@@charlottemolloy An outrage. What made it onto the longlist better be as important and interesting.
