It’s admirable to see the work Leaf put into turning his life around. He’s an outstanding public speaker and analyst. He’s even guest-hosted Rich Eisen’s show a few times!
Definitely.
He places the blame for everything solely on himself, which is rare nowadays.
@@TheSBleeder He still pokes fun at himself about it as well. That’s how you know recovery is working for him.
@@baxatakbaxatak2014 the one that made me laugh the most was when he talked about how his name got dropped on that Draft Day movie and he was just like "come on, do you think Jennifer Garner even knows who the hell I am?"
Taken full accountability and really seems like a good person. Love a comeback
Ryan Leaf told the story himself on The Player's Tribune a few years back. He got so used to being portrayed as the "bad boy" that he adopted the persona, and didn't realize he had actually become a bad person until he spoke to a man in prison who had killed someone while driving drunk. After that, he turned his life around, and now he helps other people not to make his mistakes.
bro you literally my favorite football creator
Aw thanks so much!!!
Yeah same here she’s great
@@SheGotSports YOU ANSWERED!!! that fr just made my day ngl

Easily one of the biggest busts in NFL history but I’m glad he’s found his redemption.
Another banger of a video Lauren!
One thing that seems to be forgotten was that San Diego and Arizona swapped picks. San Diego got Arizona's #2 pick while Arizona got San Diego's #3 pick.
Arizona took Defensive End Andre Wadsworth #3 overall(One spot ahead of NFL Hall of Famer and Heisman Winner Charles Woodson). Wadsworth had an injury riddled 3 season career, recording just 5 sacks.
If it wasn't for the epic bust that was Ryan Leaf, Andre Wadsworth might have been the biggest miss in the draft.
Congrats on 100K, and Ryan's rise, fall, redemption is such an absolutely amazing journey and the fact he has done his own podcast, just him, talking for hours and hours and going through everything is amazing. Are you plannning on covering Tony Mandarich at some point as well, he was arguably just as big, if not a bigger, bust than Leaf and Russell, and not a QB to boot. The sad thing is for Ryan, he had talent, but no maturity at all and i doubt any team could have fixed that at all.if
EDIT: Ryan himself has said he told the Colts not to draft him because he did not want to play for them and be in Indiana as well, which helped swing the vote for Manning though. Also huh, did not know Leaf was a dual sport athlete, neat.
Mandarich did return to have some solid seasons in Indy, so I can’t really say he was a bigger bust than Ryan Leaf
@@LordTeaboBaggins Considering where he was drafted and all the hype around him there was no way he could live up to that level though. Consider who went around him in the draft, Troy Aikman first, Tony second, Barry Sanders third. That's a hell of a top three right there and Tony had insane expectations placed on him that IMO he could not ever, ever, even if he was clean, live up to. Not when the two guys picked around you went on to have HoF careers and be cornerstones for their teams. Tony was also on painkillers and got off of steroids which wrecked his drive and strength to the point that, going by his book, he kept syringes in his athletic supporter to have his narcotics supply close at hand, while being an alcoholic as well.
The Tony we saw in Indy was good to great and solid, but nowhere near the Tony Mandarich people assumed we'd get in 1989. He was built up too far with hype and had made himself into a larger than life figure at Michigan State and had zero way of living up to that though. Sports Illustrated built him up then tore him down three years later
@@jacekatalakis8316 oh I agree on all of what you’re saying; I remember all the SI “Incredible Bulk” hype. And it’s also true that when you’ve got HOF talent sandwiched between you in the draft, expectations are going to shoot through the roof.
Only reason I can’t agree that he was a bigger draft bust than Leaf though is because Tony would go on to have productive seasons in the NFL. Leaf didn’t even have that
For those who think Jamarcus Russell was a worse bust than Leaf consider this. Russell actually LEADS Leaf in every single offensive stat, including the advanced ones.
Different rules to help out offenses though
@@MenverMan But Jamarcus still threw more TD passes than INT's in his career, something Leaf never came close to doing. Russell's still a bust, and a fat one, but Leaf still has him beat.
Bull sh*t! That is absolutely false! Show me some receipts
Omfg congrats on 100k Lauren. I don't normally leave comments on videos, just show up in streams during football season, but I remember you setting that goal last year and it's awesome that you're finally there!
Congrats on 100k subscribers. Hope you get your plaque
Great video! This was a great watch! I enjoyed watching this! Jamarcus Russell was an awfully big draft bust too.
Dude was over 300 lbs at one point so you aren’t wrong
@6:48 😂😂 Nice edit. Yes I enjoyed the video.
Great video
Thanks!
I was living in SD at that time and yeah it was a mess. Thankfully he has really turned it around and I commend him for that.
Well done!
0:18 colin cowherd being incredibly wrong? no way 😮
So I’m from the Pacific Northwest, and as such watched a ton more WSU games then UK. So when that draft rolled around, I told everyone who’d listen that Leaf was going to be the biggest QB of the era. And I doubled down by taking him first in our fantasy football draft.
My buddies still give me hell over that one
For Chargers fans In ways Ryan Leaf's failures was a blessing in disguise because he put them in a place where afterwards they ended up drafting Ladainian Tomlinson who ended up becoming one of the greatest RBs of all time and also resurrected the Franchise that Leaf nearly destroyed!
Love These Informative Stories:Great job, Lauren!!!
Great video Lauren are you looking forward to the NFL draft this year 😊
There's an old USA Today article I have saved. About the psychology of this draft where Ryan Leaf tested as an "ESTJ" which you really don't want in a quarterback: arrogant, inflexible, cannot adjust easily. Whereas Peyton Manning was an ESTP - perfect for sports. Same guy tested Tom Brady to be an ENFP, my type, which are usually actors or public relations people and not pro athletes. Some people scoff at psychology being applied to things such as draft picks but if the Chargers respect it they would have stayed miles away from Ryan Leaf.
Wow great job lauren, research on this vid is great! leaf sure was a headcase too. Chargers aquired harbaugh in 1999 right? when leaf injured his shoulder?
The got Flutie around that time.
I love it Lauren good work I really enjoyed this video how do you know all this stuff I’m just curious?
Love the channel!
Indianapolis was effectively picking for both teams.
The rap on Manning and Leaf was that Manning was more NFL ready, while Leaf had a higher ceiling.
Great content. Keep going!
I love you Lauren you are my #1 tremendous favorite football creator like no other for real for real
Wow ! Great content ! I subbed & was very entertained ! Very well put together ………….. well for a girl !😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 you’re a natural I expect to see u on ESPN in a year ! Good luck to u !
Great content as usual!
Still brought back to analyze football after felony convictions and drug stealing from youth with injuries. He had the complexion for the protection no matterhow much of a bum he'd gotten.

Another great video!
Cant wait to watch!!!
Ryan has also reinvented himself through media, he has been a sideline reporter for Westward One-Sunday night football, College football analyst for ESPN and subbed for Dan Patrick on his radio show. I'm glad he turned his life around.
Keep making videos you rock!
Its hard to feel bad for someone that i know almost everyone that came in contact with him was so put off by him that they wished for his downfall.
Love the ending
I'd put him at the 2nd biggest bust of all time behind JeMarcus Russell. While Leaf's expectations were high, there was still a QB taken before him, and thonthere was no Peyton in the 07' draft, fact remains Russell was still taken 1st overall. Very least I'd put them both in a tie for 1st.
Awesome video
God damn that was hard to watch. I am glad he got his shit together.
Ryan Leaf was such a headcase that he gave Junior Seau CTE. 😢
I cant believe that was almost 30 years ago. We gave up our entire draft for a rb that year. Yikes.
Sorry the Biggest Bust in NFL History belongs to JaMarcus Russell…Leaf is in 2nd place at this point! Trust me I don’t like him that much but I have to give him credit when it’s due.
Leaf was worse than Russell. If you want to rate Russell worse because he was a #1 overall pick, I guess you can, but as a player, Leaf was worse.
@@johncate9541 Well Leaf just skipped watching tape but Russell would be given a DVD to watch at home the night before the next practice and they tested to see if he was really watching them and gave him a blank DVD and the next day they asked him if he watched the tape and he said yes and they kept asking him and he kept saying yes lets go practice…Russell put in no effort into playing where as Leaf at least tried and failed so he gets credit for that. Also, I do respect your point of view on the two!
In the same draft there was another qb taken in the sixth round. It was Matt Hasselbeck. He would have a long career. Maybe not a hall of famer but a quality career. Can you do a video on him?
Arizona pretty much got 3 first round draft picks for going back one spot 😂. The 33rd ovrall pick (there were 30 teams in 98) is essentially much a first round pick.
Made me tear up
Excellent content
Point of clarification: Teams didn't just like the bigger arm and athleticism. They knew of his attitude and the narrative was that he has 'competitive fire' that Manning didn't. Which is a huge facepalm but the folks who liked him thought that because Manning was mature in his demeanor that he didn't have the same fire.
You should listen to the episode that the podcast Crime in Sports did on Ryan Leaf
"He committed burgerly" she said that im not even lying.
Junior See-ow
You know what’s crazy is him and Jamarcus Russell both had the talent they just didn’t care. They got their money and ran
You right but damn leaf was worse, how you throw more interceptions than completions
In my opinion Jamarcus Russel is the biggest bust. Great video as usual.
Seems like pride was his Achilles heel. It’s gratifying to see someone conquer the sin in their life, even if it means having to go through hell to do so.
A few years ago, he was on Sky Sports in Britain, and i must say he was a decent pundit. I wonder if a bad player makes a good pundit because you know what you know what went wrong
In an alternate universe, San Diego would have lost to New England every year.
Bro was NOT HIM 😂
Had Tim Tebo numbers and unlike Tebo he was a jerk.
Glad he turned his life around
I love this❤❤❤
Lauren I know that the NFL Draft is in 2 weeks but you are by far real phenomenal incredible young lady at what you do BEST no doubt😍😍 4:18
He was terrible, but the receiver needs to go get that ball at 4 mins.
This girl's football content is on par with Flemlo raps.
Guy was a ass even when in High-school didn't change over the years
Wonder how much his brain tumor that was removed and concussions played a role in some of his eradicable behavior? Feel like outcome would maybe still be same. Jr Seau for example; a football player with TBI, his decision making was likely affected. Leaf was no LB but QBs can get blasted. Great video.
Lauren ♥️
I love your videos.. ❤❤❤..
Being able to act out with zero consequences, hmmmm sounds familiar.
Jamarcus Russell was even worse
That suck he had to be with the chargers
4 yds?! 😂😂😂
Peyton Manning was the greatest draft pick in NFL's History 2:45
Jamarcus is by far worse
Umh, Jamarcus Russell 🤔?
Just gonna skip the "distribution of meth on school property" ??
Good video though . ❤❤
I hated this guy...I'm sorry but he is or was just no good and had no spine
Not for nuthin', but JaMarcus Russell was drafted first overall (not second), held out, showed up overweight, and never bothered to look at film outside of practice. So one could argue JaMarcus was an even bigger bust. Of course, Leaf and Russell never earned a place in the NFL ... outside of equipment manager. 😅
Ryan Lead was innocent !
He was elite!
It was the Chargers that sucked!
Leaf would have won 4 Super Bowls (in a row) had he gone to ANY other team!
Just think.. he could have gone to Detroit... and BAM... 4 SB wins.
Just like that.
Free the Leaf !
Ryan Leaf is not the biggest bust! JaMarcus Russell is and it’s not even close!
8:55 she did not say burglary right but it’s okay I mess up so many words lol
It actually took me like 12 takes to even say it like that 😭😂 for some reason my mouth just won’t say it right lolllll
