Harry Anderson was a warm, gracious man who died too young. I had the pleasure of meeting him in person years ago in New Orleans. I was walking with a friend in the French Quarter on our way back to our hotel room after a night of drinking when we came upon the magic shop Harry owned there. We were staring at the display in the window when Harry himself came out of the shop as he was closing up. We got into a conversation and he opened the shop back up and we sat in the shop as Harry regaled us with stories of Night Court and Cheers and the act he was putting together to perform in New Orleans. He did several magic tricks for us, just close-up slight of hand stuff. Finally, as not to be rude, I bought a magic trick off of him (it was cheap). It's a conversation starter which Harry insisted I needed to break the ice with the ladies at the bars. I still have it and I used it to meet my wife. Thanks, Harry! You are missed.

@@Slice2099 Of course I did. Why would I make something like that up? Harry was a nice guy and an amusing actor, but he was a pretty minor celebrity. It's not like he was Mick Jagger or something. It's hardly a big brag.

Keep in mind, Harry had never acted before, yet he created such an instantly endearing character here. And then very shortly after has to do both comedy and drama on his own TV series. Truly an amazing career. :D
He started as a hustler until he got beat up. Magic tricks and acting came after.
@Chrono Red Well, more or less. Some of the magic was part of the hustle. Or, at any rate, the sleight of hand.
Harry was a magician first and foremost. He was also a street hustler with the 3 card Monte game for several years. That was how he survived. He got the gig on Cheers because Les Charels happened upon him one day and gave him the gig, which Harry would help to write all the bits that he was in on that show.
I was immediately charmed by Harry the first time he walked into Sam's bar. R.I.P. Harry Anderson, the Magic Man of sitcoms.
I love how Harry gave all of his marks a false sense of security by dressing exactly like everybody's idea of a 1940's hustler..
The most stylish con-man ever. Loved him on this show.
Eventually, he straightened his life out and became a judge.
But only after he knocked over that liquor store

I’ve done it myself on friends a few times. To this day, they won’t let me wear headwear when we go out drinking.
I pulled it one someone in school once. I was young back then (gazes lamentfully into the distant horizon).
It's such a good trick that I'm afraid it's too well-known enough that I won't be able to use it and it going well. Also I don't drink

So the fun-loving Judge was once a petty crook and a con, huh? I miss these days, we were in too much of a rush to get away from these times.
This was his original character, he did it long before Night Court, even did early SNL.
He was also like that when he was young, worked magic and cons on the streets in big cities, and turned it into a lucrative, legal career. The stuff you saw him do here and on Saturday Night Live he'd perfected since the mid-1960's (note- he was born in 1952).
your so right there but in todays world there are so many people that are soooo paranoid if things don't go there way in the 80s people in those days just took a Deep breath and just got on with it and if some people was so up tite about anything perents back in those days just tell you to witch a programme like cheers or Alf or Metal Mickey the 1980s had them all in todays world you will (NEVER SEE PROGRAM'S LIKE THESE EVER AGAIN NOT EVEN ON SKY OR CABLE TV)
I loved the 80’s. Maybe not the big hair, but the clothes, music, Miami Vice forever changed police drama. When we went out we dressed up.

He chose to do Night Court.
Ironically Harry and Gary both made their final appearances in the same episode; the last "Bar Wars" episode during the final season. Night Court ended the year prior so Anderson was able to make just his second appearance on the show in 10 years. He only appeared once during the years Night Court was on.

I loved Night Court. But sometimes, I wish they had spun off a Harry the Hat show.

Harry eventually was thrown out of Boston he then changed his ways and his name going now going by Harry Stone. He eventually got his law degree and became a night court judge.
If he's not careful he's going to end up before Judge Harold T Stone! Lol! Of course there is one problem with that! Cheers is in Boston, Massachusetts and Harry Stone's court is in New York.

i mis the 80s witching programs like this with my older sister's in front of an open fire especially in the winter my sister's couldn't stop smiling at me while i was giggling at this programme especially when it cames to Harry and his tricks he plays on everyone in the bar and how he loves to Drive everyone in the bar crazy no matter what trick he's got up his sleeve

Hung out with Harry a handful of times as a result of him dating my good friend. He was fixing up his beautiful Pasadena home , a Green and Green built home. Even managed to make him laugh out loud a few times. Sadly, I lost possession of a human skull because of their relationship.

Harry Anderson said the atmosphere was totally different when he came back for the last season of cheers. I wonder if the cast took it out on him that John Laroquette beat other cheers actors for best supporting actor.

@@Jabroniville I have heard similar sentiments. After eleven years the show was so successful that the actors had big egos and were somewhat full of themselves, for lack of a better word. Lol Also, the Coach passed away years earlier. He seems like such a nice humble man. That being said, I am a big fan of both Cheers and Night Court.
