I seriously believe Archie Bunker's Place, which was also set in a bar, was one of the major targets of Cheers. I think the people who made Cheers knew stuff about Norman Lear which suggested he wasn't nearly as wise as a person like his television work was. He probably was even like Sam when it came to womanizing, and was probably even worse. Archie Bunker's Place didn't last long after Cheers debuted.
This takes me back to being a child in the ‘80’s. This was my father’s favorite show. I knew I made it to late childhood when I was allowed to stay up to 9:30 pm to watch Cheers. I get so nostalgic watching these!! Can’t get enough.
It's funny, when I was a kid in the 80's as I was turning the knob on our small TV in our living room, going through different channels I use to come across the ending credits of cheers. Sometimes the beginning of the intro but I use to say to myself: "man I hate that music"! Maybe every now and then an episode or two, just a glimpse but hardly. I was not into sitcoms. Heck, I had no idea what a sitcom was, let alone the word itself. Now as an old man I can't get enough of cheers! I must have watched the entire show over and over again countless times. Now I wish I had back then.
Darn right it was one of the top sitcoms. The writing was OUTSTANDING. And both the cast and crew were essentially exemplary in every way imaginable. And while I'm here, I *WILL* argue that "Moonlighting" was equally fantastic when it came to the entire production--especially regarding the writing and direction. :)
@@pamelalagree-kanotz6845 Strange, I thought Kirstie was WONDERFUL as "Rebecca Howe". Yes, Shelley Long was brilliant as "Diane", but the Howe character was also fantastic. The character was always a "paper tiger", and it was a subtle nuance of difference over the Chambers character. Also, interestingly enough, it TOTALLY tracks that both Alley and Cattrall once also portrayed "Star Trek vulcans". Their general demeanors, vocal patterns, neurotic presences, intensities, and so forth were very similar.
I've literally been watching this show since 1982.. I still love it! Watched them first run, syndicated, and now i just pop in DVDs. I consider TAXI CHEERS and FRAISER to be one big shared TV universe.
When I moved to Boston in 1994 it was still the Bull and Finch pub below and a different restaurant upstairs but they were connected by the internal stairs. The bar didn't look at all like the Cheers set but it was still really cool to see it in person. Seeing the intro with the outside that I passed so many times really takes me back.
I visited there with some grad students on a field trip studying urban renewal, Jane Jacobs, in the mid 80s. There was a Japanese radio ad company recording my table clinking their glasses saying cheers. The show was already an international hit.
@@cvn6555 it was always called the Bull finch bar, they doctored in the name Cheers and rearranged the the bar when they were filming, sometimes they can make the bar look bigger with camera settings and angles
@@doubleoddbs4357 They didn't film the series there. They filmed it on a set built on a sound stage. I mean, I lived in Boston for five years while the show was on and noticed when the sign outside the actual bar was changed.
I miss that show, then I bumped into Ted Danson at boat Logan airport about 20 years ago, really nice guy, I asked him if he wanted to have a drink with me because they had a bar called Cheers at the airport and he said he was unaware of the bar and said he had to be somewhere, but he was nice about it 🤣
Am 47 been homeless and addicted to most things am still struggling but with all the things and ppl I've forgotten I can still sing along with the theme tune for some reason 😂
She sure was. She was much too refined and intelligent for Sam. She was far too whimsical and light-hearted for Frasier. And as for Sloane 🤣 he was clearly the father that she was desperately trying to gain attention from her whole life.
Honestly, I didn't think Diane was beautiful until I had the TV on mute for a while. That's not a joke, and I'm not trying to put her character down. It's odd how things work like that.
Even when I had no time to watch the whole show I would always watch long enough to hear Norm come in; he always had a one liner that would make me laugh.
One of the best comedies of all time and one of the best comedies that the new Channel 4 here in the UK back in 1982 decided to acquire from you! It was even worth watching on a grainy, fussy reception in the beginning! Then Channel 4 followed this up by buying Frasier from ya! Two of my favourites. 💯👍🤣
Gorgeous opening piano variation that I've never heard before (after all these years). Kudos to whoever wrote it and/or decided to include it :) Mahalo.
This makes every other sitcom second place, I have no higher compliment. Cheers was like white noise, comfort food, a warm blanket a best friend and more...
I can make my eyes vibrate. Freaks ppl out still. I was a kid 35 years ago give or take. I remember this in the summer when the show got popular or came out. Dad grilling and life was good.. early/mid 80s miss it
Where have I seen "Miss Guilder" before? 10:11 - Carla said "six bucks an hour" but that's not what the caption said. 😲 15:15 - Look at Dianne handle those pretzels with her bare hands. Hello, Health Inspector? 24:37 - Not only does Ted Danson fall down for that "Bonanza" joke, but you actually see his feet in the air-comedy gold. 25:08 - Diane said "Der Ring des Nibelungen", but the caption said "Ners ring of the new lungs." I kid you not. 23:40 - Sam: "He survived the Titanic? Coach: "I forgot to ask." When I was in junior high we were assigned to write an original story and read it to the class. One bright spark wrote a tale in which he did not survive. He actually stood there and read "Then I died." 25:55 - Dialogue: "I put up with your sporting events." Caption: "I put up with your squirting events."
My beautiful baby bride Mrs. Sarah Kennedy from Brooklyn new York 🇺🇸 hi queen Sarah hi honey I love you you are so sweet and cute and beautiful love your wonderful husband Johnny Kennedy
Good HEAVENS, the writing on "Cheers" was so legendarily wonderful, yes? What a shame that here in 202x... ummm... maybe I'm wrong, but ya don't really see anything like it. Sure, sure "Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul" has some monumentally groovy writing, but there's nothing like THIS in terms of comedic writing that actually worked, was performed at exemplary levels, and landed so strongly on two solid feet for DECADES. What a treasure of a series. Paramount must be over the moon that they have the rights. Also... it's hard to believe that Nicholas Colasanto isn't going to be the only one who's passed on much longer. :( But hey, we all only have so many years remaining. CHEERS! :)

Previous comments about the Cheers bar actually being Boston’s Bull and Finch bar are mistaken. The Cheers bar was a specifically built Hollywood studio set. Only exterior shots of the Bull and Finch were used.
The writing for Cheers is timeless. After 40 years, this material is still hilarious!

Ironically Ted Danson is from San Diego just like Ted Williams was.
This show is so well written that you can listen to it and enjoy the show. It's practically the best radio show ever, it just happens to be on tv
How did you know?
And WKRP. :-)

Classic show as was the 80s
the GOAT show, and it has aged wonderfully
I remember watching this as a kid and that "did I hear a buck snort" line cracked me up then and still does now. Hilarious!
Thursday nights in the 80s were the best!
They certainly were! ❤
Cheers, Night Court, Hills St. Blues. And Cosby and Family Ties were in there at one point.
I remember that line up!
Absolutely! Always looked forward to Thursday night… the good old days.
So right you are at least the one I remember(lol)
Definitely one of the TOP sitcoms of all time 🎉
