  • Drone pilots normally fly with big fancy radios with dual analog sticks and fancy switches. But what if we took a step back... and tried to fly a drone with a 35-year-old game controller?

  • @chrispoulsen1709
    @chrispoulsen1709 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I've always wanted to see a logitech or thrustmaster joystick, you have the X-Y on the joy as roll - pitch and you can rotate the joystick with your wrist for yaw which is super intuitive.This leaves one hand free to control throttle only with a throw lever for right on the base for throttle. You still get total control and you leave one hand free to just control throttle. I remember thinking as a kid that this would be a superior set up for fixed wing when I visited a local AMA field.
    Plus at some point they are probably all analog encoders so it should be possible just to hack analog inputs maybe pass through an arduino if you need the voltages to come inverted or at a different scale... That's it I'm going to do it, that will be totally sick.

    What I would have done was made the A button be at a throttle position that would sustain forward flight. Then the B button would be a "boost" button which would be full throttle. SNES controller would be better. Not sure if you'd be able to do it but I would configure it in quazi acro. Basically acro in roll but not pitch. Use the Shoulder buttons for roll left and right, with full 360 degree movement, but have forward and backward on the D-Pad be pitch to a certain angle as it would in angle. Then you could use the 4 buttons (A, B X, Y) for different throttle outputs (hover, forward flight, full throttle and gradual descend)

    You guys should try a HOTAS joystick setup because that could actually be useful for people who for whatever reason don't have the ability to use the gimbals and switches on a standard R/C transmitter. It could open up a whole new world for people with physical challenges. I had the idea some time ago, but since Drew has the interfacing of the controller to the transmitter figured out already, I'll gladly pass it on so someone who's confined to a wheelchair and doesn't have the fine motor control to use a standard transmitter for example, might get the opportunity to participate in our hobby while we still have it. If you lay the groundwork, it might open the hobby up to people who never even thought it possible that they can operate a quadcopter. Cool episode guys. I knew it was possible,... 😁👍

  • @yngndrw.

    You could try adding some delay to the throttle mixer to smooth it out a bit.
    I'd like to see mouse and keyboard:
    - Throttle set to default to just below hover (20-30%) with no keys pressed, control to lower throttle to minimum and space to increase throttle
    - Mouse for pitch / roll
    - A / D for yaw

    As a game developer (and homebrew NES dev), you don't need to treat digital inputs as strictly digital. It's quite common to add some smoothing or inertia to the input value to emulate the feel of an analog control. Bonus project! I wonder if you can modulate the audio signal fast enough to output a PPM trainer signal from an actual NES. NES whoop racing?

    "Drew went from Engineer to tech, to pilot, to personality, he's a fart... I mean smart dude"... para phrasing Josh there.

    It needs to hold altitude, A up B down, D up forward while maintaining altitude, left and right as you like it, not to mention you can have preprogrammed moves like in a game, like Double-tap left or right for a roll, that would require a little bit of a lag in response to initiate a button sequence,not much.
