The Art of Steven Seagals TenShin Aikido

  • What is TenShin Aikido?
TenShin aikido is a method, or style, of instruction for aikido and the specific application of aikido techniques. This methodology originated and has become popular through the teachings of Steven Seagal Shihan (also known in aikido circles as Take Shigemichi Shihan). First and foremost, it must be understood that ALL techniques of aikido, there are literally thousands of them, come directly from O’Sensei and his unequivocal teachings. The saying ”aikido is aikido” is completely true and profound. All of aikido is O’Sensei’s aikido. It must also be said that not every aikido instructor, dojo or organization teaches aikido in the exact same manner, with the same attitude or application. However, there are extremely specific characteristics of TenShin aikido that have emerged from Seagal Shihan’s teachings that differentiate it from “mainstream” aikido of today.
Seagal Shihan became head instructor of the first TenShin dojo in Osaka, Japan beginning in 1975 (TenShin translated to English means “heart of heaven”). His manner of teaching aikido took on a very practical application driven and severe attitude, which, over the last 30 years, has emerged and transformed into today’s TenShin Aikido.

Complaining about the attacks in Aikido is like complaining about why there are no high kicks in Judo. They're done in a deliberate way. The Ukes job is to allow him to perform and perfect the techniques so they're approaching him in this manner. There aren't really Aikido on Aikido competitions like boxing or MMA. His technique is definitely quick and solid though. Will this work in a MMA octagon? no. But if someone came at him in the street, their ass would be on the ground with a broken arm.

The attacks in certain schools vary from absolute nonsense to absolute intent.
That is why Aikido gets a bad rap. And it's the national schools which make Aikido look ridiculous.
However the small schools no one knows about are usually the better schools.
Research is necessary and moving away from home may be in order.

@@kenyattadanclar3498 Aikido is a surprise to an untrained attacker. The opponent just isn't where you thought they would be at the point of contact. Seagal's technique is based on his large size and he doesn't move his body much. He gets away with this because he is so fast with his hands. Smaller people can't use this style.
The ones that win in MMA are the wrestlers with brute strength and thick skulls that can take punches and keep coming at you.

I don't know about that. Akido dosent have the combat aspect like boxing, mma, muay Thai... Which makes me skeptical. If you don't do full contact sparring you want be use to handling anxiety in a real street fight an you won't be able to pull those moves off in a high stress street fight. There are no video on TH-cam of akido working in a street fight. Meanwhile there are countless videos of BJJ Wrestling MMA Boxing working in street fights.

By 1973, having been learning kenpo karate about 2 yrs at the time, I stumbled on an article in Black Belt magazine about a martial artist that did Iaido. He was a 7th dan in Aikido at the time.
His name was Mitsunari kanai. I felt Karate, Kung Fu, etc.. would at some point lose their effectiveness as age takes over. Reading about O-Sensei Morihei Uyeshiba, I realized this was the ultimate martial art. His skills became almost magical as he got older, well into his 80's. Because they no longer relied so much on physical strength. It's the control of the anxiety from within
that has to be dominated. I followed Sensei Yoshimitsu Yamada I believe at the time was 7th Dan, head of NYC Aikikai. I studied his technique. Also, Sensei Koichi Tohei , who stressed the KI.
After a 4yr stint in the U.S. Navy, and several years late. I relocated to North Hollywood, Ca. I decided to get back to studying Aikido. About 1986, looking up Aikikais in L.A. I found three.
One was in the valley. Another was in Little Tokyo. With all due respect, after sitting at both for a few minutes, I quickly realized they were basically going through the motions.
There didn't seem to be a serious approach to real life situations. The third Aikikai I went to turned out to be about 5 minutes from where I was living at the time, TenShin Dojo. I could still see where the walls had been whitewashed having been converted from a mechanic's shop. But when I stepped in, there was a tiny Foyer leading to a split barn type door, leading to what seemed
like a huge dojo floor. I saw this asian man, who I presumed to be the head instructor [ total stereotypical thinking]. But the man who rose to attend me was what seemed to be more of a caucasian man. After which he finally introduced himself as the head. Sensei Steven Seagal. He was very welcoming and encouraged me to attend.
From the first moment he took to the tatami, I could feel the energy. And after having been thrown by him, [I'm 6' 1", 200lbs.] while punching full force,
I realized I had finally found the real thing.
Much Love and Respect to Seagal Sensei. As well as Shihan Haruo Matsuoka, the most beautiful execution of Aikido I have ever witnessed.

@@TheChosenOne161 Aikido cannot be used in sport because it is dangerous like sword fights... straight to the point (because in actual battle you expect to fight not 5 or 10 but hundreds of men and use little effort to last a long way - you still think it won't work 1v1 today?) and requires more precision and timing than most martial arts out there. Wing Chun also requires accuracy and mastery.
You can start boxing anyone today but you can't use aikido until you are a master and that's why people like you talk crap about the art.
You don't see Krav Maga competitions do you? that's because it's used by Israeli Militants to eliminate their opponents and so it is not something to make fun of especially since thousands of lives were lost in the battlefield because of it.
Aikido needs to be mastered before going out to the streets, Steven Segal is extraordinarily accurate and definitely mastered this art.

This is real martial aikido. Something has been lost in translation over the years. It has become too passive, and Steven knows the real version. It's no bullshit, he is/was the best of the best. Much love and respect to Mr. Segal, and
Anyone talking shit, doesn't have much credibility, or they just don't have their facts straight. I'm a wingchun man myself, along with a few other styles,
But I've dabbled a Lil in aikido. It's a hard art to learn, but makes sense for its intended application. All depends on who
Teaches u, the mind set, and your ability to perform the rolls, and timing, and traps & grabs. What people don't under stand, is falling and rolling are very important, because if u resist, u will break bones in your arm, dislocate shoulders, wrist, etc. So u always see people going with the throw, and not resisting it. Trust me, when u do, it hurts worse. I respect, and admire this martial art, and hope others find it. It is also very spiritual. And humbling.

I watched all his movies and observed how he prepares to enter the attack as it is launched much in the same way wing chun does we go to meet any attack and then redirect
Yes i know its all choreographed but if your a martial artist you can see the lessons that people like this do reveal even onscreen and its perfectly evident here on this video even Bruce Lee sought to use film to convey ideas and if you watv ch Way of the dragon its full of useful info . . . . . if you know what to look for same goes for Segal
I have to say though that blocking parrying and redirecting is not very workable in a real altercation but the preparation that is shown here will get you into the line

There are very important aspects that are not included for a reason as far as sport fighting. You cannot tell me that the samurai were not efficient warriors. The stuff you see today is exactly what you said it is, entertainment. I can guarantee that you would not be a fan holding a Coors while watching a samurai on the battlefield. The choreography is excellent. What is aikido? It's not a martial art because the person doing the throwing has opponents who cooperate and allow themselves to be thrown. They extend body parts to be grabbed and they never resist. How does this work in a fight? Aikido never does competition nor sparring. So aikido practitioners never train to defend in a real attack situation. They are great at demonstrating whatever it is tbat they do. I mean it's very acrobatic and entertaining, but it has little to do with fighting. I don't have anything against this stuff. The aikido training that is dangerous is the way they train for défense against knife attacks. They do it the same way. The guy with the knife alllows his hand to get grabbed. The problem is that in a real fight the knife guy will extend and retract very quickly, trying to not allow his knife to be taken. In aikido demos the knife guy gets defeated instantly because he doesn't try to win. So a student having never been exposed to simulated real knife attack scenarios will think he can easily defend against a knife attack despite never being tested in a realistic scenario. He must be told that his weapons training is not effective in real life and to run away as fast as he can from any fight situation. The thing I don't respect about seagal is tbat he spent a career putting down real martial artists like chuck Norris and others who actually were real fight tested. I mean they did full contact fighting. Seagal only did this demonstration stuff with cooperating opponents. He was a bully and was known to beat up smaller guys who never trained at all. Seagal is 6 foot 5 inches. He doesn't need a martial art to beat up short skinny guys. His movies were totally acted like all movies. He was never tested in a real fight, even in combat sport. All his abilities that anyone has seen is what we see in this video which has zero to do with fighting.

Hi 1 Bad Z. You're right. He did have a dojo at the corner of La Cienega and Santa Monica. I quit for a while and lost touch.
Then after a few years this had to be around 88 at least, I happened to drive at that exact corner of La Cienega in Hollywood.
I saw an Aikido sign on a second floor brick building. I found out Seagal Sensei had relocated there. I went back for a little while
but it just didn't quite have the energy it had in N. Hollywood.
Yes, the building was prettier, but it didn't have the raw grit or the huge floor. Plus, Above the Law and his second movie had
already come out by then and it just felt like some of the students drawn were for the Hollywood star factor.
When I attended N. Hollywood dojo, he wasn't in any movies or acting yet. I was shocked when I saw a commercial on TV
with his face advertising Above the Law. I had no idea he was getting in movies.
Speaking of Shihan Haruo Matsuoka, during La Cienega time, a friend of his was coming to visit from Japan . He asked if I
could do him a favor. I took them to Disneyland.
I had and have great respect for him and his great skill. He was Seagal Sensei's number 1. By the way, thank you all for your kind replies.
And yes you're right I was lucky.

Not sure what weebo LARP'ing garbage you guys have heard or are into, but there's no way you're doing anything to a guy with a sword, let alone who knows how to use it. Aikido needs sorting out because it's becoming a laughing stock due to people not initiating the attack, not learning omote techniques, not training in kotai and not doing any randori. If you don't make an effort to learn the jujutsu, then what are you learning the Aiki of and what are you going to apply Aiki to? I want to get some traditional jujutsu done and then return to the Aiki part to add that to it but I'm sick of ring fighters putting Aikido down and not offering a solution for multiple opponents. I don't want to grapple a guy outside and have his mates stab me while I'm putting him in an arm bar!

Hi 1 bad Z. Aikido Ten Shin was in North Hollywood, y e a r s before, he relocated to La Cienega and Santa Monica Blvd. I know, because I
was lucky enough to live less than a mile from the dojo. The students that attended in those days were people that were driven by a passion for Aikido.
    Not movies. Not celebrities.
It was a large gritty place where you learned to really defend yourself. It's kind of like entering a hardcore bodybuilding gym, sweaty gritty seriously heavy weight
clanging, vs a frilly pastel chrome weight place where everybody seems to take the room to socialize.
The classes were intense. On Friday nights, black belts like Larry Reynosa, then 3rd dan I believe, would drive all the way from the city of Ventura, another
black belt, came from San Diego, these gentlemen, and other black belts, would come from far, every Friday, every week. I believe Reynosa is now Shihan, 6th dan.
Shihan Haruo Matsuoka, then a 3rd dan, took soo much punishment as Seagal Sensei's uke.
You ask me, "what do I think of Seagal Sensei after Hollywood?!
I see a pattern of people who seem to reach a certain pinnacle of achievement in any field. Whether it's movie star status, the worlds best band, being
    the richest individual. M a n y , M a n y , M a n y people, will always try to pigeonhole, criticize, denigrate and bring you down.
Why?! Because these individuals have something you don't. Making a standout impact in any field, takes an exceptional level of dedication few of us are
    willing to give.
If people criticizing Seagal Sensei would spend more time looking in the mirror, rather than judging him, they would have no time because they have so many
flaws to work on, they would be too busy correcting themselves before they get judged by somebody else.

In the matter of fact, I’ve somewhat modified the Sabaki method to be used in Muay Thai with gloves on. (Instead of grabbing the gi or jacket, you use arm lock or hook to control the opponents movement)
He’s seen blocking the opponents punches then spinning them off. Imagine, adding knees and elbows from the “blind spot” from behind the opponent to take care of biz. Sabaki is used in Ashihara and Enshin karate. Look it up

However when it comes to the street as many fuss about, you perform without rules, you fight with the flow that's why the good fighters always try to personalise their disciplines for themselves. The notion that an aikido fighter would fight like this on the street is just basic ignorance. Make no mistake, from what i see here, seagal can take any opponent down. He will win some and lose some. Connor Mcgregor (mma) lost to mayweather (boxer)

Not that i disagree with you but clearly Mayweather vs Mcgregor would have ended in short order with vastly different results in an octagon under mma rules. Also, i will add that if one is limited to only one skillset be it aikido, judo, karate, wrestling, etc. Most often, if not, almost always, in a real world combat situation, said expert would succumb to one that has mastered or is atleast well versed in multiple arts. Versatilty is key in survival. I cant imagine that anyone would seriously suggest that Seagal would present a real threat to a John Jones if survival were on the line.

OK folks I see people have a wide variety of opinions about Steven seagal so let me set the record straight sensei seagal is absolutely 💯% Legit & the real deal,he is a grandmaster Aikido 7th Dan/degree black belt practitioner of the art, also he's a high level black belt in karate, Judo,& kendo! I myself am a high level black belt in several disciplines of martial arts including Aikido, kendo,jiu-jitsu,Kung fu, jeet kune do,Judo, plus I'm a catch submission wrestler, also have experience in boxing, kick boxing,& primitive weapons fighting expert so I know what I'm talking about & I'm just telling yall that he just like myself has devoted his entire life to the study of martial arts,he studied & taught at his on Dojo in Japan for 20 years! I've met Steven seagal & trained with him & he watched me give a martial arts demonstration then I watched him give one & I'm considered a master, even grandmaster by many but I was actually in awe of his skills, fluidity, speed, grace, agility, balance, techniques, & overall ability! He's also a nice guy, good sense of humor, musician, good actor obviously, & just a cool respectable man. I don't know why alot of people don't like him, think he's a joke, talk BS about him,etc but all those people don't know him like I do & simply don't have a clue what their talking about.

what are you talking about? serious or cynical? unfortunately Seagall is grosly overweight and thats a shame. as an aikidoka you should also be "in harmony" with yourself.
For the rest, Seagal is a legit aikido master, unfortunately completely ignored by western aikido historians.

@@JustMe-vz3wd You are absoluely correct in saying that he is ignored or maligned by most aikido teachers. They fail to distinguish his Hollywood persona from his true life respectfulness for o-sensei and Aikido tradition.
His martial skills extend far beyond what is taught in most Aikido dojos. Steven's a really nice guy.

@@peterbestetti It tells a bit that the (western) aikido community is a bit snobbish culture, with their fancy hakamas (which are very unpractical for training purposes), their names in japanese language on their uniform, etc. While Seagall is an aikido pioneer, studied aikido in japan, speaks japanese and had a dojo in japan, there are ZERO articles about Seagall in Aikido Journal, and aikidokas in general look down on him because he isa moviestar making movies with combative aikido kicking the bad guys instead of smiling and hugging them.

      @peterbestetti ปีที่แล้ว

@@JustMe-vz3wd You are quite right. If only people listened to WHAT he says. It is all too easy to mistake his clear statements for arrogance, which they are not. He simply has strong positions which in general I find to be correct. I'm a little too old for training now, but I had intended to attend a local dojo to just watch others train. I was disappointed when the sensei lampooned Steven Seagal for no good reason other than allegedly having given Aikido a bad name. Steven applies several martial arts in his movies; he never claimed to be using pure Aikido. Also, they are just movies intended for entertainment, although he did try to communicate his environmental concerns in a couple of his movies. The recent TH-cam offering by the young Karate exponent is a serious lesson to anyone who maligns Steven. No one seems to bad mouth Bruce Lee for incorporating Muhammed Ali's boxing style into Kung Fu on the film screen, nor for being a little too realistic with his stuntmen. If anyone makes even a small criticism of Bruce Lee, they are hounded to death on the Internet. Go figure? Steven's martial credentials are beyond question and he is a true master, and actually humble.

@@peterbestetti the beautiful and strong attitude of Osensei of his Asian attitude of love and compassion towards the oponent, is too often misunderstood by western aikidokas as some weak hippy peace love have a flower in your hair kind of attitude.
Thats why these people get upset when they see an aikidoka who kicks the butt of thugs and criminals (in a movie.) For them, you should hug a thug and give him a big wet kiss.
Stevens sensei Hiroshi Isoyama and other oldtimers, are as tough as Steven in his movies. They would kick any streetthug in real life the way Steven does it in his movies.
i love his old movies often with an environmental touch. His later movies are pure crap. what happened why he changed... :-(
especially when you are old, or sick, or injured (except headache or concussion) one should practise aikido bc its like a medicine. i practised with 90 year old people who could barely move. it is a GREAT learning experience. :-)

hi 1 badZ. It would be very typical in the days of O-Sensei Morihei Uyeshiba to do that. I didn't hear about Seagal Sensei, but I did about Mitsunari Kanai.
Back in about 1973, he was a 7thdan.
And he relayed a story about how it took a while to be accepted into the class. In those days around the 1960s, some could not afford to pay for lessons, so if they were lucky enough to be accepted, they would become Uchi -Deshi, that is a (live in student). But it meant total dedication. You had to maintain the dojo. Cleaning, sweeping. Plus doing laundry, cooking and anything
O Sensei required. But those students were the ones that went on to become the new masters. Men Like Morihiro Saito, Yoshimitsu Yamada etc...If at anytime the Master felt someone was unfit for the study for whatever reason, he would kick out the student, sometimes, in the middle of class.
I have heard people criticize that Aikido works well For Seagal Sensei because he is so tall. But actually , the founder of Aikido was about or just under 5 ft tall. He was very small.
Many who studied under him complained his grip was like a vise and quite painful. He was a very spiritual man.
Interesting anecdote. When making the original 'Star Wars' movie, George Lukas is said to have heard about the incredible abilities of O Sensei, and that he was the inspiration for Yoda.
If you look at Darth Vader, that's the helmet of a Samurai.

A couple of things that often get overlooked when people are disrespecting Aikido and that is a) one of the greatest weapons in a street fight is the ground and if an experienced practitioner happened to get hold of you, you would be hitting the ground hard and fast, and that will hurt b) in a street fight much of Aikido is impractical, however, not all of it is, and if I was in a fight, Aikido would be me back up, it wouldn't be all that I did.
In a live situation, I have used Irimi nage, and Sumi Otoshi to stop fights, but that's only because I got to the back of someone quickly, and secondly, I got the other person's arm. I was at the receiving end of a fast Sumi Otoshi and I had no time to even think about it. As a consequence of a bad breakfall, I fractured my leg which took years to heal. No martial art is going to save you. You should learn a few swift combos that have nothing to do with martial arts, they will help just as much.
