    I just realized that he not only has to memorize the entire song in sync with the piano track, but he has to memorize the exact pitches, hand movements and rhythms of both hands at the same time. He could literally play with his eyes closed if he wanted. That amazes me to no end, being a guitar player, and never knowing the true complexity of learning such a haunting and beautiful instrument.

    • @Jack93885
      @Jack93885 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      from what I've heard about the theremin, learning the notes is a lot like learning chord shapes. It's about what shape your hand makes and where on (or i suppose in this case in) the instrument you place it. While it's undoubtedly more difficult than guitar the principle of practice makes perfect still applies. I can Play Blackbird while led in bed while half asleep because i know where my fingers go from one shape to the next, that being said I have the gift of a fretboard this is something else

    • @SpriteWild
      @SpriteWild 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Playing by ear is less about memorizing a lot of things and more about it “clicking” in your brain and simply knowing. Once it happens, you can play anything.

    • @Jack93885
      @Jack93885 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SpriteWild He's playing by ear? I thought for sure this was heavily rehearsed

    • @SpriteWild
      @SpriteWild 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh I’m actually not sure. But if it was played by ear, I meant, it would be less “memorizing” everything like a robot and more simply knowing where all the tones go.

    • @jefolson6989
      @jefolson6989 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Jack93885 Im only starting, but with guitar you can quickly play something that resembles actual music. Not so with a theremin! Its maddening, and the sound haunts your sleep and infuriates the neighbors who don't know what the hell is going on. ( headphone help) . With hard work and daily practice, in a few months you might be able to play a sloppy scale! This is my experience. I can tell you this gentleman is an extraordinary virtuoso- and this is the result of many hour,months and years of determination.

      The 2017 version, while played more nuanced, has many more tonal inconsistencies than the 2010 version. Given the incredible difficulty of staying perfectly in tune, could one assume the 2010 version was tone-corrected?

    • @ActuatedGear

      +The Great Gyrofluff
      Why would it be difficult?
      Seems like it would just...take a different...language. It doesnt sing the same way...or rather, it cant play, it can only sing...if that makes sense.

    • @TheGreatGYROFLUFF
      @TheGreatGYROFLUFF 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      actuatedgear It's hard to understand quite what you're trying to say but it's a very difficult instrument mostly because it requires you to be 100% aware of every motion of your body at once when you plan. It also has no definite location for any note so it has to be a memorized position of you hands in space that you have to move from and back to with no markers.
      I suppose I would compare it to playing a guitar with thick gloves so you can't feel the cords or strings while you have to keep you body as still as possible.

    • @ActuatedGear
      @ActuatedGear 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Great Gyrofluff
      What instruments do you play and do you play by feel, ear, or notation?

    • @TheGreatGYROFLUFF
      @TheGreatGYROFLUFF 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      actuatedgear Ukulele, Base and a little pan flute. Mostly by ear a little feel and notation. I can't exactly read sheet music though.

    • @ActuatedGear
      @ActuatedGear 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Great Gyrofluff
      When you play does it ever feel like you're singing? For instance you are playing a rather involved and emotional piece and you might need to add some vocals but its too much of a brain strain? Like singing two voices at the same time?
