  • This video is an explanation of why I went from a KLR 650 to a Tiger 800 XC to a KTM 1090. I've had these three bikes in the span of the last 3 years. I've done a reasonable amount of miles on the first two and just getting started with the KTM.
    Hopefully this will offer some insight for those who may be considering a purchase or an upgrade from one of these. My general thoughts and opinions about each of the motorcycles given my experience with them.

    Had a klr 650. Did everything but nothing really well. Upgraded to ktm 1290r and it does everything extremely well. Highly recommend getting a ktm if you can afford the initial price and the cost of maintenance

      Couldn’t agree more. I struggled deciding between the 1290 and 1090. After adding cruise control, 1290 rear metal rack and other items the 1290 comes with I’m not sure there is much of a price or weight difference. But everything I saw claimed the 1090 was more agile off-road. I’d be really interested to ride both back to back but doubt that opportunity will arise. I’m happy with the 1090 though and didn’t care for the keyfob on the 1290 just seemed like something to potentially go wrong in the middle of nowhere. But I try to do mostly gravel and off-road riding. So that heavily influenced my decision. Good to have so many options.

    • @cdwolf9031
      @cdwolf9031 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yup. I had a hell of a time deciding between 1290 and 1090, after riding both bak to back. I came down on the side of more power (bigger grin) with minimal weight penalty. Also cruise control std which I knew I wanted for longer trips

    I'll be buying the 2018 KLR soon, my reasons for this is A. The price, B. cheap to maintain and availability of parts, C. you can work on them yourself without needing to hook a computer up to them & D. there are a shit tonne of after market parts and accessories for them...

    • @kdemotorsports
      @kdemotorsports  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’ll love it they really are great bikes for the money and you can ride and explore almost any terrain with them. A bike I really liked and was pleasantly surprised by when I bought my first one which was a 1997.

      Bill, they are TALL for sure. You do get used to it, but it is certainly an undeniable side affect of the ground clearance + suspension travel.

    I was thinking about getting the KTM 1090. I come from the serious dirt bike riding genre, have a 450 xcw and 2 300's, an exc and a xc. the 1090 is very big but now I'm thinking of waiting for the new 2019 KTM 790 Adv. R. Looks to be quite capable off road but still comfortable on dirt roads and pavement, compared to the 690.

    • @kdemotorsports
      @kdemotorsports  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wanted the 790 too but too uncertain in terms of when it will arrive. If you come from dirt bikes you’ll love even the 1090. Except for picking it up.

    Great review. I have an adventurized DRZ400 enduro model ( not available in USA?) with a wide ratio gear set fitted. I use this bike for the more rugged rides. My 2015 Tiger800 XCx fills the more road biased trip role, but can cope OK on rougher dirt roads at speed. If I had to go to only one bike I would be torn with the decision to keep the DRZ or look at a KTM 1090 again, despite the cost and upkeep issues. I won't go back to no cruise control though. The pre- 15 Tigers needed suspension work as do the F800 and AT bikes. Bang for buck the Tiger 800 wins.

    If the KTM 1090 and 1290 were the same price, which one would you have gotten? Just curious on why you chose the 1090 over the 1290 and what your thoughts are on the 1290 if any?

    • @kdemotorsports
      @kdemotorsports  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Price wasn’t my driver for the 1090 vs 1290. It was the more off-road focus of the 1090 based on what I read and saw in other videos before buying. Now that I own the 1090 I’m not sure how or why there would be any difference given that so much of the two bikes are identical. So I would love the opportunity to ride both for a long enough period of time to compare them in identical broad usage to see first hand. Probably won’t have that opportunity and since I’m not a fan of cornering abs or the keyfob on the 1290 it I we’re going to do it again I’d still probably opt for the 1090. That’s because my primary reason for moving to the KTM was it’s off-road focus. If I were looking for more on road I probably would’ve kept my Tiger 800.

    • @bigjerm9657
      @bigjerm9657 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply, this is exactly what I was looking for from a 1090 owner. I too would look to get off road at every opportunity, but I need to ride a lot of pavement to get to where I want to ride. Great video, thanks for taking the time to make them.

    • @kdemotorsports
      @kdemotorsports  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problem, I will say the 1090 is perfectly find on the highways too. Probably a seat upgrade would help but I'm not sure the 1290 seat is any different. I'm in a similar boat in terms of having to ride distances to get to the spots where I can really go off-road. That is exactly why I wouldn't go with a 690 or something along those lines.

    • @thepassionofthegoose5472
      @thepassionofthegoose5472 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I went with the 1290 because of the motor, full stop. The majority of the weight difference (22lbs) literally comes down to the centerstand on the 1290, which is approximately 17lbs. In offroad mode they are indistinguishable in the bush, but on tarmac the LC8 motor of the 1290 turns it into a literal weapon that devours superbikes with ease. Truly a beast that needs to be ridden to appreciate. I also own an XR650R, so if I want a true dirt hero I've got a sub-300lb option that makes the 1090 feel like a truck.

      @@kdemotorsports Right now I am about to buy a TRIUMPH TIGER 800 XCA or a KTM ADVENTURE 1090 R. I HAVE A QUESTION ....WHICH OF THE TWO BIKES HAVE MORE STABILITY WHEN BENDING IN ASPHALT CURVES ON TWISTYS ROADS?

    • @kdemotorsports
      @kdemotorsports  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      David Martbeck the the Tiger is definitely the more sport oriented of the two. The KTM holds its own and has significantly more power but it’s obvious the roots of the Tiger and the tires also play a part too. The KTM comes with tkc80s which are definitely biased towards off road. Just overall I think riding them back to back it’s obvious that the 1090 is a more dirt oriented machine and the Tiger is a more street oriented machine. Both great bikes though and I don’t think you could go wrong with either.

    For decent paved back roads or even some highway riding would you say either the 1090 or XCA have a strong advantage or is more comfortable than the other? Right now I am riding a Yamaha Super Tenere which does fine on the decent roads but my roots are with dirt bikes and I am wanting to getting into some real ADV riding (want to start doing the BRD's just watched your clip from CO & it looks awesome) my brother has a 16 XCA and I love the motor on the road but not sure I would like it off road and at just over 6ft I feel a little cramped on it, Thanks for posted the great videos the are very helpful

    • @kdemotorsports
      @kdemotorsports  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ben, first of all thank you for watching. In regards to the bike question the Tiger 800 XCA offers a better value in my opinion than the 1090 simply because it comes with a lot right out of the box. It is also a very comfortable road bike and more comfortable than the 1090. Now on the flip side the KTM is a MUCH better bike once the terrain gets more difficult. Also the KTM definitely provides a level of "fun" that as much as I loved the Tiger 800 I just didn't get from that bike. So it really comes down to how much of which style of riding you're going to do. If you truly are going to be doing more road riding then the Tiger might be a better fit. If you're going to be doing more off-road riding then it is the KTM hands down. Like I said in the CO video, I'm confident the Tiger would've made it through everything just fine but the grunt and low end torque of the V-Twin on the KTM was really nice to have and made hill climbs a piece of cake. The Tiger due to the tripple engine design doesn't have the same low down grunt. It will do it but you have to ride it differently. Hopefully this helps and post back when you make your final decision. Would love to hear about it.

    You need to talk to your camera operator about how to frame a shot. Have them look up the rule of thirds technique. Placing your face in the center of the frame...is not good.....
