Kenny Rogers is the definition of "range", from his early days with the 1st Edition (I just dropped in to see what my condition is in) to his very country "The Gambler"! Solo or in many of his famous duets, Kenny is always great.

If you want to step back before his country music, it was Kenny Rogers and the First Edition.
This was during the Vietnam protest era, and in 1969 they did a song that will cut you to the quick.
It's the story of a disabled war veteran called "Ruby (don't take your love to town)"
That song and the lyrics will hit you right in the feels...

Like the live versions of Tom Jones-"I`ll Never Fall In Love Again", & Bobby Hatfield 9Righteous Bros.)-"Unchained Melody" ...both are incredible. This performance is great; however, my favorite version is when he & Lionel sang it together In Las Vegas at an awards show, shortly before Kenny died. The love & friendship is so beautiful to see & Kenny talks about how their friendship & this song became a reality. Sooooooo good! Look it up. I promise, it is just the best. To see the 'country' side of Kenny, check out 'The Gambler' or 'Coward of the County'. For another beautiful love song, perfect for a loving couple, check out 'Through the years'.

Oh, Kenny Rogers was the first to do his concerts on a stage that was round where the band was in a pit in the center and his mic could go around the stage and he would not have to backtrack to get the wire straight and that way he could sing to the everyone. Kenny called it " In The Round.

Kenny Rogers started out with the New Christy Minstrels in the mid 60's (sort of a folk music sound), and then moved to
the First Edition (a rock band) -- try "I just dropped in" to see.

Have you ever heard early Kenny Rogers from the 60's. A Psychedelic Kenny in his band called Kenny Rogers And The 1st Edition doing ..."Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Is In)" It was the 1st time I heard Kenny. This song was very popular. It's the full Kenny deserving recognition in this genre as well.

Kenny had a cold at the time of this performance, which gave him a little more grit or gravel in his voice. For this song anyway, it made a difference.

Then he talked about how at one point he was sitting on the toilet writing the song.

    1. Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)
    2. Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town
    3. Something's Burning
    4. Reuben James

You both are ADORABLE in this reaction. Long time listener first time caller (lol). There is NOTHING in the world, like a Kenny Rogers rasp. Full confession--when I was like 8, I got a Kenny Rogers Greatest Hits album as a gift (I have no clue to this day why this was given to me, I had no clue who he was). But, I had a phonograph (remember those?) and would play it over and over and would sing myself to sleep every night w/ Kenny Rogers.

I was lucky enough to see Kenny live 2 times and he was at his best live. Kenny was really a artist unlike most, He fell into the country not turn country, Ruby some called Folk music but some called it country. But to my ears Coward Of The Country was his real first country song and the movie was real good. Just like the song " The Gambler was on the line between country it too had a good run with I believe 3 movies and Kenny stared in both along with another movie called Six Pack and the song Love Will Turn You Around was another great son. But if you want to hear his Greatest Hits please do the original not remake or remix. I'm 64 and I know music better than most from the 60's 70's and 80's. But that whole Disco thing was for dancing not listening to, That is only my opinion and don't get me wrong, Disco did have it's place in time but it didn't last like they thought it would. Oh could I blow your mind with so Rock n Roll, but this is about Kenny Rogers so I digress.

I saw him in Greensboro, NC twice in the early 80s & although I was not only a very inexperienced drummer at the time, I was more into Foreigner, Journey, ELO, etc., but I also liked the 80s top 40 as it evolved out of the 70s & began to have quite a bit of Country crossover hits. He was a great performer with some really good songs that began to make that shift just before another all time favorite of mine made crossover a normal thing - Alabama, who I saw numerous times!
