Eric with his Original 1886 Winchester in .45-70 (manufactured 1894)

  • I loaded these cartridges for my original Winchester a little hot with 65 grains of FF Goex black powder. The flat-nosed bullet is .457 inches diameter, 405 grains, 20 parts lead, and one part tin. The sun made quite a glare on the iPhone camera that day!
    Check out my Chapter 2 video of this awesome piece: • Eric with his Original...
    Also, I would like to extend an extra thank you to my friend Joe, whose iPhone camera work has made all of these videos possible.

    I remember seeing the Winchester 1886 Deluxe being offered at Shot Show. It seemed like it took about 18 months to arrive at the shop I work for. I had almost forgotten about them being offered. It was totally worth the wait. The wood and case coloring look amazing. I have not shot it yet, but watching this video sure make me want to. You rifles action sounds amazing!!! Great video!!!

      Dale Beam Thanks! I hope to film another with the sun higher next time. Yeah, I think I am going to use this in my next silhouette match. That will be tough at 50, 70, 80, and 100 yards since all the animals are grossly undersized. The chickens at 50 yards are only the size of soft balls.

      @@littlehouseguy7782 Well, with TH-cam greatly disliking reloading videos these days, I personally would not make actual video footage of the reloading process itself. But if you one day would decide to share your experiences with BP cartridges by talking about them and showing maybe a still picture or two, I would find that very interesting. Back in the 70's I had a Thai Mauser, Made in Japan. I sent it to a Gunsmith and had a barrel change and a few little changes, removed the dust cover. I loaded it with .458 flat nose in 305 grains that shot the 45-70 real well. 2" group at 100 yards. I tried FFG to the brim and compressed the load. big flame, lots of smoke . fun until cleaning time., otherwise I stuck to IMR. Over the years, my buddy got it for a song, he was very happy, unfortunately he passed on with a massive heart attack after 2 months.I did not want to be an indian giver and wished to get it back but he already gave it to his son, well and good.

      Hardcase Hardin - Cowboy Action Shooting I don't do cowboy action shooting but have gone to watch it in person and have enjoyed it. I have thought about it, but I don't want to abuse my original pieces. I also make my own ammunition, so I tend to want to conserve it. With that being said, I am interested in getting better with my model 1873 Colt .45 six shooter replica, and doing some cowboy stuff with it sounds fun. I have only shot one round from the hip in my life, and of course I missed!

    • @maineiacoutdoors689

      I think everyone runs replicas and for special events might run originals. I can't wait to get back home (I'm in Ukraine for the winter with my lovely bride) to get to my first matches.
      You reload so already ahead of the game and a smoke junky too, you'd fit right in. And costuming will not be an issue for you.
      I'm starting out with some Pietta 51 Navies and the Yellowboy. Will find a SxS 12 ga when I get back. Thank God for the internet so I can do a little shopping for gear and get my CAS match fixes in.
      I have to take my time aiming and pray like crazy I don't miss too bad. lol
      Oh, and occasionally the bigger annual matches (State, Regionals and up) will have side matches like Plainsmen where you could drag out the Trap Door or one of your other single shooters and not beat em up.

I'll have to take it in to a gunsmith to see if it's still usable - the barrel looks a bit shot out to my untrained eye, it needs a new rear site and the magazine plug is missing. It would be great if it's usable, although I'd have to pick up some black powder for my reloading bench.

I have not done anything to the stock or anything else cosmetically to the rifle and don't plan to. I like the .38-55 cartridge and used to have a Marlin (1893?) lever gun chambered in it. However, I sold it as a wall hanger because the bore was like a sewer pipe, and I couldn't get it to shoot accurately.

    • @littlehouseguy7782
      @littlehouseguy7782  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never done a full disassembly on the rifle. It tends not to get too dirty. Maybe this is the case because I tend to shoot it as a single shot and normally blow down the barrel between each shot. Also, I frequently swab out the bore during a bench practice session, so I just don't think I let all the fouling accumulate enough. Lastly, I load my own ammo and try to keep the brass cases for this rifle separate. That way, they have bumped up to the chamber specs and make a good gas seal. Perhaps all these things together help keep it not as dirty during a practice session.

I will ask the president of our group next week. The sights on this gun won't let me accurately shoot past 200 yards. If I shoot this cartridge in my Springfield Trapdoors, I can easily hit 500 yard gongs. I will also ask about the killing power. I have heard that these heavy slugs cause a lot of punching damage in the body with a very big damaging shockwave as opposed to faster small caliber bullets.

      I don't know much about the value of original ammo. Anyway, I'm sure you will save the brass if you shoot a few. By the way, most of the guys in my black powder club just reload one brass cartridge all day and shoot singly, so sacrificing one round in order to just reload that may be acceptable. I do see guys online who will make the brass from .45-70 for clients. That may be the way to go. I do see that it is an early smokeless cartridge that became obsolete in the '30s. Good luck, and keep me posted!

      Thanks! If only the sun had not been so low causing that glare! I am not the best person to tell you if it is strictly black powder or not. I am sure that there are people on both sides of that issue. I'll actually ask more senior members of my group and get back to you. I believe most would agree that the action and barrel would be strong enough for typical (non-magnum) smokeless .45-70 loads. However, some may say that the rifling wouldn't do all that great (accuracy) with hard cast lead, or that other metals (such as steel projectiles) may damage the rifling inside. Who knows? As for me, I only plan to shoot this rifle with black powder and lead slugs that I cast with 20 parts lead and 1 part tin.

    • @littlehouseguy7782
      @littlehouseguy7782  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Obviously, generally it is best to shoot the gun with the bullets that it was designed for. However, some members in my group think that shooting smokeless .45-70s in a Winchester 1886 would most likely be OK if they were "standard velocity." Avoid any smokeless rounds that say high velocity, Marlin, or Ruger on them. That's the best I can relay to you. As for me, I will only shoot black powder rounds in mine. There are, however, modern powders that are designed to burn at "black powder" pressures, but I understand that most people are not reloaders.

    • @littlehouseguy7782
      @littlehouseguy7782  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mostly shoot only single-shot rifles, so that is just how I normally do it. Also, I do use a blow tube between shots to keep the fouling soft. Thirdly, in trail-walk off-hand matches, you'd be surprised how heavy a gun can get by the last quarter of the match. Having heavy .45-70 cartridges in the magazine only just adds to it. Lastly, technically, we are not supposed to be walking with a "loaded" piece at the range. I have been there long enough that that should not be an issue, but we are naturally conservative. Check out my latest video with this rifle. I do load a few into the tube to placate some viewers who have commented on the fact that I shoot it as a single shot. Furthermore, when I practice on the bench, I bring all my reloading supplies as do the other members so that we all just reload one at a time as we practice between matches.

      @littlehouseguy7782  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sunaJH To my knowledge, black powder cartridges are generally not crimped. The case is sized (and if necessary, the mouth slightly flared) to fit the projectile snuggly. The projectile compresses the black powder load, so the bullet naturally won't want to fall down into the case. Then, I generally push the loaded cartridge up the resizer die just enough to squeeze the end. That allows cartridges that are a few thousandths too big to chamber, and it also keeps the projectile from falling out of the cartridge case. This is the closest I get to a crimp when loading black powder rounds.

I tend to shoot only one at a time since accuracy and target shooting are of primary importance to me. (Also, I make my own ammo, so I don't like to just blow through it.) If I were in a skirmish with it, I'd have the whole magazine loaded. Other than that, I use a blow tube between shots to keep the black powder fouling soft for better accuracy. Little House Guy Hey, don't get me wrong! I said it is a gorgeous rifle, and you're a pretty good shot with it too. I just noticed you dinged yourself a couple times while injecting, but you didn't show the cleaning between.
      I'm a handloader too, but I never used black powder, and unless I'm tuning a rifle or going for serious accuracy, I tend to load a lot, so I can shoot a lot🙂. But not because I just go bang away. I do a lot of drills with pistol. Much of my shooting, especially rifle is slower and for precision though. Even loading by hand gets expensive with larger rifles.
      Do you cast your own bullets too? I imagine buying them in 45-70 isn't cheap. I want to get a single action revolver, and maybe old lever gun too, and cast my own.....one day, if I can ever afford it.

      I don't really crimp black powder cartridges (loaded with soft lead); I run them fully loaded just a little up the resizer die if they are too big to chamber easily, so they are slightly "squeezed" a thousandth or two thousandths of an inch less. I did that for these, so I could have loaded up to ten in the gun if I had wanted to. Our club normally focuses on single shot rifles, so that is just how we are used to shooting- one at a time, and then we look in scopes where the shot went on paper and talk about it. Also, for single shot rifles, I do use a blow tube between shots to keep the fouling loft as I did here between shots (not pictured in the video). The off-hand trail walk match is also a test of endurance. People quickly underestimate how tired (or less steady) their arms can get after holding the gun for more than 30 minutes without putting it down, and having a magazine full of heavy cartridges adds to that fatigue. I've considered filming another trail walk competition with this piece and have thought about what I would do differently since I've come to realize the 1886 is quite a popular piece. I still own other rifles I've yet to debut!

    Love old cowboy guns. By the look of your shooting, this would be very capable of taking a dear or hog at 150 + , especially with a scope.

      At 200 yards with just the iron sights sitting at a bench, I have gotten 10 shots in a row within a 10-inch black circle (so-so shooting, really), so yeah, this piece could do it with just that.

      This video was taken a while ago, and I had been and still am to a degree hesitant to speak in videos since my voice has an unattractive nasal timbre. The video used to have annotations that appeared when I originally created it using TH-cam software, but that is no longer available, and the annotations disappeared from the video. Most of the shots are between 70 and 100 yards. There is a long shot on the course that is 200. My later videos show clearer footage. I do have a chapter 2 video with this piece on my channel that you might enjoy more. Frankly, I've never known why this so-so video has ended up being so popular when there are better ones on my channel. Well, the 1886 Winchester is a rather iconic piece, I would say.

    • @littlehouseguy7782
      @littlehouseguy7782  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, my channel started with a friend just recording random shots of mine on his iPhone during trail-walk matches. It was all so informal, impromptu, and unorganized. Only in the last year or two have I started thinking about video quality and all of that. I've always seen better videos online but decided just to record the gun shooting and hitting things in order to provide a different kind of "satisfaction" when compared to lengthy review videos with lots of talk and not a lot of shooting. You know, I don't even know video editing software, and we just piece all the takes together on his iPhone to make the video. Rather sloppy if you ask me!

    • @littlehouseguy7782
      @littlehouseguy7782  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. You may like my chapter two video better with this piece. The link is above. I don't shoot it as often as I would like. I am not worried about "wearing" it out because I only shoot my own reloads in it with 20 parts lead and one part tin. The moment I have finished practicing, I do a thorough cleaning. When people see the bore, they think the rifle sat over a fireplace for 100 years because it is so shiny inside.

      You're too kind! Well, I may have a dead eye, but that is canceled out by my unsteady hand in off-hand shooting. I've got good days when I really connect and plenty of bad ones. Honestly, that day, I think I only landed about 60% of the "first" shots. That video was just my first shots at the targets.

    Why are you only loading one shot at a time?

    • @littlehouseguy7782
      @littlehouseguy7782  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a couple reasons. In general, the club is not fond of people walking with "loaded" rifles along the trail for walk-through matches for safety reasons. In addition, we are traditionally a single-shot rifle club. Also, and more importantly, I blew down the bore between shots (which was not recorded) in order to keep the fouling soft so that it didn't harden in the rifling grooves, making my subsequent shots less accurate. My chapter two video with this piece on my channel is a better video in my opinion.

    • @littlehouseguy7782
      @littlehouseguy7782  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, it is! It is black powder! The .45-70 cartridge was originally a black powder cartridge, .45 caliber and 70 grains of black powder. I only shoot black powder in my original period rifles. However, I am sure this piece could handle light smokeless powder loads.

      @littlehouseguy7782  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. It was a fun day. I don't fully understand the reference to the cartridge belt. The stock did have some grease on it from my greasy hands having loaded all of the cartridges before. Could that be what you're referring to? I do hope to film a chapter two with this great piece. I will be attempting our next silhouette match next month with it. The trigger pull is a bit more than I would like, but I hope I'll get past that by the match.

    • @Aussie038
      @Aussie038 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have found that it is really easy to knock the stock on the cartridges and mar the finish. :)

    • @littlehouseguy7782
      @littlehouseguy7782  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll be mindful of that from now on. It had never occurred to me in the past. I actually don't know much about original finishes, bluing, etc. Members in my group have told me that this piece has the original finish on it, both barrel and stock, but I realize that I don't really know too much about it all. I care mostly about the inside on original pieces, and I was so surprised to see such a shiny bore with sharp rifling that I just had to get it.

      @@gibmelson7628 I don't know if I'm the best guy to answer whether gun cleaning is a problem or not. I am pretty much just a black powder shooter, so probably someone who shoots smokeless powder a lot would say that cleaning black powder rifles is a problem. I'm used to it and schedule in time to make sure it is done right when I get home from practice. Certainly, it is something you don't want to put off doing, and it generally does require soapy water first. Obviously, I work hard to make sure water doesn't get into the rifle action.
