Thank you for this video Dr. Maiden. I'm 31 and going back to school. Trying to double major in Philosophy and Political Science and this video gives me a bit of courage to not give up.
Thank you Dr. Maiden for taking the time to make these very informative videos. I personally appreciate you and these videos are so helpful to me. It’s been hard with the pandemic to get good advice and conversation since everything has gone virtual. I literally all day have been thinking about how can I combine Business and Poly Sci and then your video was on my feed.
Thank you Dr. Maiden. I am majoring in political science currently and looking to add a major in psychology. I may minor in accounting as well but that’s still a pending decision.
This is a great double major! I've know so many friends/students who paired political science with business/econ. Always follow your interests! If you love them both and you can make it work with your schedule, do it! The schedule might be a bit tighter as finance/econ is typically run through a business school and political science will be through the college of arts and sciences. It might mean a few more classes for each that don't double count as nicely, but it is still very managable! Best of luck to you!
Sure! As long as both subjects are a passion for you, there will always be ways to combine them and justify them. It's always good to blend science and humanities.
Would it be too strange of a combination to double major in political science and pharmaceutical sciences if you want to go into pharmaceutical litigation?
No, that sounds really cool! Especially if you do a poli sci degree focusing on pre-law or public admin. That sounds super smart, actually. That's a cool combination!
@@DrEmilyMaiden I am on the pre-law track at my college so this reply made me feel more confident about talking to my advisor about it haha, thank you! However, do you think it’ll take longer than four years due to minimal overlap/only overlap occurring in gen ed classes?
@@MJ-no6su It's all about planning. If you plan ahead you'll know whether it will all work together. Know what will cross list and what won't and know if you'll need to have a heavier semester to compensate for the lack of overlapping classes. Plan, plan, plan ahead!!!
Yes and yes! You can most defintely make time to double major AND be active in clubs and ROTC. It's all about time management. I was a double major with a minor. My good friend was a triple major. We volunteered, were active in the honors program, studied abroad multiple times. It's all possible. And comm and polisci are a great paring that have a lot of natural commonalities/overlap. You'll find they go together nicely. It will be a complement to each other, not too much of a direct overlap. Best of luck!
Dr, how about l do international relations and political science, or international relations and diplomacy with political science, please madam educate me detailedly on the differences, or are they more less the same stuff thanks Doctor
So international relations is a field of political science. Most likely you can do a political science degree and focus on the IR track. That's what I did. Diplomacy is part of IR. You may or may not get specific classes on diplomacy or foreign policy, but I doubt it will be its own major program at most U.S. institutions. I would focus on political science as a major and then go from there to add other majors or minors that might interest you!
I’m a Sports Media Major wanting to major in Political Science🤣 the weirdest combination, but I’m really interested in both. Just feel like it’s going to be hard
Thank you so much ! I read something about FSU that they only allow UP TO 6 credits for overlapping. Did I read something wrong ? Like is that even possible ? :(
I think this is an amazing collaboration! There is so much space for interaction between these two majors. As you know, so much of politics is theatrics--between social media, tv, radio. There is so much space for analyzing politics through a journalistic lens. And the flip side would be looking at the politics of journalism! No journalism is objective. There's usually always a political angle in there somewhere!
@@tsegaberhe7953 That sounds really interesting! There is so much politics that goes into architecture, both public and private. You could do well studying public policy and administration doubling with architecture as well! Just think about how to get all the course credits to count, as I imagine an architecture program would be through an engineering school, not the college of arts and sciences. Not impossible, but may require more pre-planning.
@@DrEmilyMaiden Thank you!! Sorry I just have another question but do you think it would be difficult to pursue in terms of both the double degree itself and for the future?
@@vanditaswami2993 Do you mean difficult to pursue them in college? No, it should be fine as they are both within the college of arts and sciences typically, at least at US institutions this is the case. When you double major within college it is easy to double count electives and make your schedule work to double major. In the future, you will undoubtedly find ways to make use of both degrees, as they can inform each other in useful ways.
@@DrEmilyMaiden Ahh thank you so so much Dr Maiden!!! I've been struggling to figure out what to do in terms of majors for college and don't really have anyone to guide me to through it. You've been incredibly helpful :)
Thank you very much for the video. I am currently pursuing MA English and I want to do my PHD in political science. How tuff do you think it is to be accepted in PHD with an english MA? (In american universities)
It's all about how you frame your narrative. I've definitely worked with colleagues and students who managed it. It will be about proving you're ready for the work and that your previous educational experiences are relevant to your journey. I would highlight any political science courses you took or relevant internships. Might also be worth it to consider a program that will start with an MA and then build out a PhD. An area of concern might be methods. If you're planning to be qualitative, it should be ok. If you plan to be a quant, I would think about how to show you're ready for PhD level work with no quant methods classes under your belt. Good luck!
@@rheribanke7356 I'm posting a video tomorrow (Mar 3) that is going to address this directly because you're not the only one asking this question and it's a good question! Check out that video tomorrow!

Poli sci. Always.....keep in mind I'm biased :) Orrrr, double major!!

@Kalel Ezequiel Yea, have been using Flixzone for since december myself =)

Absolutely! This is a very common double major path people choose. You will certainly not be the first! They combine well!
Hi can I take political science, social work and international law ?

I would talk to your advisor about that! All universities can have slightly different policies.

That's a very popular double major actually! Even a few of my friends did that exact combination as undergraduates.
