I was in woodland hills during the 1989 earthquake in Oakland, and we felt it, and in Northridge during the 1994 earthquake. I put an earthquake kit together for work and home and started wearing a whistle. If you get pinned down unde debris, you may not be able to scream for help, but you will probably have enough air to blow a whistle, and the whistle can be heard over a greater distance. 🙄

I felt this quake in San Rafael, my home is on Bay Mud of unknown thickness and is very old. The authorities say in the event of a disaster if we don’t need 911, send a text instead of calling loved ones, to keep the comm channels open. Just something brief like “I’m ok”, it will be batched and sent as soon as possible, allowing 911 calls to go through.

Here's one more scary thing about earthquakes. They can happen anywhere. I live in Tucson, Arizona -- not exactly earthquake country. I have experienced two earthquakes in my life here. Now, nothing like what California or more quake-prone areas get, but as such, we're not as inclined to be prepared for them.
In 2010, specifically on April 4, 2010 (and yeah, I made a note about it and kept it), there was a 7.2 earthquake in the Baja region, and we felt it here. It was about 3:40 in the afternoon (local time), and I was resting after work. It jostled my bed twice, set the hanging lamp in the kitchen swaying, not to mention the vertical blinds at all the windows. Okay, not much of an effect, but enough to send me and all the neighbors in my apartment complex out onto their patios, looking around at the area and each other, wondering what the heck had just happened. We found out soon enough.

Animals often act weird before big quakes, geese were acting so weird yesterday at dvc we bought water for earthquake supplies. Birds get oddly quiet, the geese were walking oddly, one acted dead in a pothole until we stopped to look closely and made it move and the others were standing around quietly staring. I thought the earthquake would be last night based on the timing of the weird animal behavior before the Loma Prieta quake, but the geese knew.

Why are they showing a 6.2 on the Richter scale quake when the Loma Prieta Quake, which brought down buildings in Los Gatos and badly build buildings in the marina. etc. Supposedly about 1300 buildings were destroyed and about 20,000 were damaged. I stood in a doorway in an office building in San Jose, CA. Not much happened. I did know a few people who lived in the Marina District of SF, CA. None of them were happy campers. The Marina District was build on SAND. It moved in the quake (a 6.9 on the Richter scale). The 1906 earthquake was supposed to have been even bigger.

You need to stop finding fault everywhere you look. A 6 cracks a few brick buildings, a 7 will down over passes and roads in places, an 8 will start reshaping Major acreage at a time, 9 means you are completely on your own , there is no water, no electricity, stores are stripped and luted, and an year after the quake the area is still trying to rebuild. Basically, please take quakes serious and build readiness. Camp stove, fuel on hand, warm sleeping bags, multiple 5 gallon water stores, some kind of foods. In Anchorage in 1964 we were lucky, our family was lucky because we had snow in the yard that we melted for water for a few weeks. Our quake was a 9.2, 2000 times stronger than you CA quake in SF. Good luck. Be prepared.

The media constantly try t o frighten people about earthquakes. A small quake that might be a helpful movement, releasing built up pressure is labelled "a foreshock." They make a big deal of a 5,- in 2010 Oklahoma City had a 5, and the only damage was that a brick facing fell off a guy's garage. The San Andreas is 700 miles long, and the next quake might be anywhere on it, including in the empty desert.

weird, a (5.1 is NOT a "large" quake). I hear it depends on what part of the country you are in. Something about "what the ground is made of". Over here in the east. I felt a quake that was in North Carolina. And I'm over here in the middle of West Virginia. That quake was only a (3.0). So Quakes over here move some "rigid" ground (limestone, and shale, and coal). I guess California ground is made mostly of Jello.
