- A section of sidewalk in Hayward that showed the movement of the Hayward Fault was 'fixed' by the city, much to the dismay of geologists. Mike Sugerman reports.

WOW! 40 years to fix a displaced sidewalk/curb. Well I guess it's a lot sooner than you could get the City of Los Angeles to fix a sidewalk. L.A. waits till someone falls down, gets injured because of it then the city gets sued then fixes it. Great city management from both cities.
Most cities in the Bay area are on an 80 year replacement schedule. Some of the sidewalks in my neighborhood in Oakland are original from the 1880's, but most date to the 1930's and 1940's.
There are good changes coming to Los Angeles. We just elected a bunch of progressives to our city council, and one of them, Hugo Soto-Martinez, the very first thing he did when he was elected was directed the department of transportation to fix all the roads and sidewalks in his district
@@AdamFaruqi Unfortunately, city council members don't tell city departments what to do. So don't hold your breath looking for road repairs anytime in the near future.

The city does its job on the one part that didn’t need it.
You would think that they would actually have monument markers pounded into the ground and they could measure the movement between those a lot more precisely than they could measurement the movement of the curb.
However I went to Cal Stae Hayward in the late 80s and remember an exhibit in the science building that had a picture of this.
Truly a shame! But the big one is near so it’s not that much of a loss when everything gets destroyed.

I think it's important to be aware of movement of the fault line when it occurs ,so the studies can be found and kept in record

Even as a Kansas resident, even I knew about this curb and it displacement.
Once had some property in Kansas aand there was a fault that ran through it --- I didn't see it and dropped the front wheel into it -- got stuck--- spent 2 days digging it out

the news sounds so sarcastic, like "Who cares, it's a crack, they fixed it. Let's move on." But i really can imagine how much this crack was telling of the movement and shifting of the ground. That totally sucks.

I am pretty sure there are similar cracks along the fault that can be viewed.

They should install some nice metal plates on either side, one with a pointer and one with a rule, and cast them in place reading 0.0 mm.

Except the city wouldn't do it. This isn't uncommon.
Geologists generally do not apply their names to faults. For precisely that reason. A fault is generally named after the region where it's first studied, or the most notable geographic feature above or adjacent to it.
And no, the geologists wouldn't have tried to get the corner protected for study. They knew it had to be repaired eventually. Their main complaint was that they weren't at least warned first.
A great section about this intersection and fault in the documentary "Voyage of the Continents". I highly recommend it if you're into geology and/or plate tectonics.

"hey how should we keep track of this geological feature?" "Well it just created a major trip and fall hazard, let's make everyone else deal with it so we can look at it occasionally" yeah no, this was the right thing to do.

It should have been obvious. That sidewalk is literally in every introduction to geology textbook. And indeed, it was a pilgrimage site for many.

@@AnoraJohnson It would be pretty scary if they did NOT study geology. It's always a nice touch to be sure that you are not designing a nice urban deathtrap during an earthquake or tsunami.
@@kevincrosby1760 I agree. Unfortunately, plenty of developments don't take geology into account. Sometimes people build unsafe things - and sometimes people build things that muck up the environment and our water supply.

Had one here locally that had a bit of an issue during a range fire. The residents all got out safely in one long line of vehicles heading down the road...while the fire equipment was trying to get up the road to save their houses.
Now that little gated community has 5 somewhat charred foundations. The cheapest foundation once supported a $1.2M house.

It appears to only be a few inches in the original photo. Parts of the fault "creep" with much smaller quakes. The largest displacement in the 1906 San Francisco quake was 23 feet.

This is a little worse. That sidewalk was actually providing us with useful information about fault deformation on the most dangerous fault in this country.

Why is it every time they talk with someone to represent the city it always looks like someone you hope doesn't have children and can see the evil in their eyes. Then they open their mouth and you would think they had the frequency of the devil by the way they make you cringe as they speak.

Same thing going on in Hollister California if you go to Dunn Park you will see where the ground has risen that is part of the park you walk around in that area you’ll see offset Curbing!

If the ‘fault’ was so monumental, the city’s responsible parties (Geographers) should’ve erected a sign nearby and notified city works department to let that damaged sidewalk be… well, till a civilian tripped and fell then sue the city for millions. Lol

its fine. It will start showing movement again sooner or later. Scientists most likely took accurate measurements last time they visited it. so all data is not lost.
They just recalibrated it, it's been zeroed out.

Can a person who’s house sits directly on a shifting fault even get earthquake insurance? And WHY would a person make a long term investment in purchasing such a faulty located home?
On a slip fault like the Hayward, you just build on a pier foundation and adjust the piers every 20 years or so; or you build the house on a deep anchored slab on one side and on piers or a non-footed slab on the other so the ground can slip underneath.
