This was the exact point in the video that I clutched my chest and cackled maniacally. I said this poor baby is gonna regret those words in 5 seconds. It's a great movie with a horrifying plot but him saying that just before the picture reveal was great comedic timing before pure gut turning psychological horror.
so ari wanted to explore how horrific sexual abuse within families is but subverted it so that it’s the parent being abused by the child. The son uses a lot of manipulation and gaslighting to instill fear and submission into the father which is typical to abusers.
And you know what's really messed up.. alot of people saw this and found it to be hilarious. Like literally funny. And I've seen so many comments under videos on here, and on Reddit of people saying as much. very disturbing. And a real example of how SA involving men is viewed.

It was about incest. Ari said that having an adult assaulting the child would be to simple and common (unfortunately). So he flipped the roles to show how hard the victims struggle with the shame of being harmed by a relative. Many victims go along with it because they are ashamed and embarrassed, and may feel responsible for it.
I’ve watched both Midsommar and Hereditary but this short film made my stomach turn and heart drop more than those two. When the son revealed the picture was of his father, I immediately was like “oh fuck I should’ve known Ari Aster would’ve shocked me like this”. This dude really knows how to make the audience feel on edge.
I remember watching this film and being downright terrified that I had to read up on it. It was Ari's way of flipping the abuse-in-family storyline on its head.
Something is evil has taken root in Ari Aster because why is that man like this? Hereditary,Midsommer, this? Like please exorcize that demon in your spirit and stop terrorizing us.
Direct that energy to Stephen King as well please. But then again making movies is a better way to deal with inner demons than actually committing atrocities. Plus they‘re PAID lol
But this isn’t like a concept he made up (S*x ab*se or inc*st)…. He made his own spin on a real thing that happens to a lot of families, unfortunately. That’s part of the horror IMO😣. The real complications it adds to the dynamics of the relationships (jealousy, power imbalance, etc) is pretty spot on. It’s an incredible film, in an awful way. I can see why it was his thesis for the American Film Institute.

oh my god i did a double take when i saw the thumbnail. this film is a lot to put yourself through. i mean i love ari aster's brand of horror but this is probably the closest i'm gonna get to watching this one.
I love Ari. I feel like this is a scarier type of horror that he needs to be credited for. The psychological. Wow this crazy, the things humans can do to one another, and the way it bends our brain when we have to think of a child, abusing their parent.

By having the son do it to the father and not the other way around it turns it on it’s head making it so completely bizarre it stands out… but besides the son abusing the father, everything in this movie is really sadly commonplace when it comes to sexual abuse in families including when the other family or other parent knows it’s happening but ignores it. Like they can’t reckon with it or can’t process it. Or often a kid getting abused gets blamed for trying to bring it up or tell other family.
I think what happened was when he was young, he was so driven by this urge that he convinced his father. Like, "Please do this once," and he was okay with it. Like he told him, "Maybe it is a one-time thing. I want to experience it, and this will be the last time." So he did it. And maybe he said something like, "If you love me, you'll do it," or something like that. But it kept on happening again and again, until he took over. He literally becam the "Daddy"😅.
This was an amazing short. It’s was too disturbing but very realistic in how the victim, the abuser and the one pretending it’s not happening we’re portrayed realistically and very sadly
