I'd be surprised if you could sell the diamonds for more than a couple hundred dollars. Diamonds aren't rare to begin with and the ones they use for this purpose are generally pretty low quality. All they have to do is sparkle.

@UCcolT5UQWfhjdKI5Wyu_o6Q over analysing piece of shit. It was painfully obvious he was refering to the concept of the video and the breakdown not the use of the item
The reason it is $7k, it not in the materials. It is in the craftsmanship and the quality. The gold Rolex uses is always 18K gold and the steel is a Rolex's own 904L steel, that is made to look ekstra special when polished. There is also the MOP dial with diamond hour marks and a fully encrusted bezel with diamonds, that of course adds up in the value. You also pay for the name Rolex, but that DateJust is actually worth a bit more than $7k, since their watches are highly sought of.
I'm pretty sure everyone knows this. Without the name behind it, it's not a 7k watch just as gucci and prada etc. would be valued far less. This video is strictly about the material value, or did you get confused?
@@DeedlyDood More about the fact there have been around 10 different educated people working to make that watch. Also it takes around a year to complete the watch, that is also an expense you are paying for. The testing of the watch lasts a week. You are mostly paying for quality.
It takes Rolex about a week to build a watch from cutting the blanks to ebauche to decoration and plating. They produce over a thousand a day. When they say it took a year to make a watch they're talking about development.

Ladies TT Rolex Datejust with Jubilee Band. The center links, bezel, crown cap, hands, dial markers: 18K. Possibly Jewel settings and alloyed gear train. The case and outer links are 317L Stainless. The Diamonds are all very high quality VVS1. How many "Points" (diameter in mm)? 20? .20 karat? If you melted a full gold case and band (not two tone) you would have gotten $3k.
To recover the silver, you should have put the AgCl into NaOH solution until it turns black, forming Ag2O. Then add sugar and get a large exotherm. Result is silver powder. To prevent silver evaporating, melt borax in the crucible and drop the prewarmed silver into it. Regarding silver and ammonia: such solutions on standing form explosive mixtures, (solver azide) especially on standing!
These models pre 2005( for the datejust that is) have hollow centerlinks. The new ones are solid. Even the 16710 and 16750 gmt models ( ended in 2008) have hollow steel centerlinks
@Adam Defibaugh Theres a lot of factors that determine the value of a watch. Theres certainly not $7000 worth material there but that's not all your paying for.
Robin Lundqvist if you think about it $500 for the gold and $2k for the diamonds and you have to pay someone to make the watch by hand so really i can see the justification for the price. Also you can get this Rolex fro probably around $4k if u wanted.
"Did you send Cody that rock we cut apart to analyze what's in it?" "Yep, also sent that watch you inherited in to be repaired". At the watch maker "Why would they send me a cut apart rock?"
Skilled labor isn't cheap and cheap labor isn't skilled. In things like watch making, its all about labor costs. Even the mighty Cody (meant as compliment) couldn't turn a pile of materials into a working watch. I have watched some great watchmaking documentaries. Much respect is deserved! Another great video!!! Thanks for the content by brain needs.
To get silver out of ammonia solution, you as use sodium dithionite (just like you used sodium metabisulfite for gold). I found a local chemical supplier who actually has sodium dithionite, so I can just crash the elemental silver out of solution instead of cementing (which produces copper metal waste) or doing the lye and sugar process. But the copper method works great.
From what I can find, there are 48 bezel diamonds, plus the 10 dial diamonds. Rolex doesn't like to give exact diamond info for their watches. They're probably 0.02 carat diamonds, supposedly of fairly high quality. They should weigh 0.22g total. If you were buying them (and it's hard to find prices for loose diamonds that small) you might pay $20 each. The diamond market being what it is, you might be able to sell them for $20 total.
Diamonds are worthless at that size. Even most pawn shops won't take em. 1 karat and up at a Leo grade might be worth something. The saying diamonds are forever is true. There is a an abundance of them and they don't go anywhere. Plus the industrial use for diamonds is very low. The only way to make real money with diamond is size. Most diamonds aren't large so to harvest larger diamonds means rarity which means money.
Arbbym9er Diamonds are worthless. If you think I’m wrong go buy some from a jeweler then walk back in and attempt to sell them back. They won’t buy them from you or if they do you might get 5% what you had just paid. Total scam.
@@chrisj197438 Assuming it wasn't a very specific custom job (ie a ring in a style that they sell a lot of), presumably they'd pay at most what it would cost for them to make the next one for the display case. I don't think they make ~95% profit, so I think 5% is way too low -- probably more in the range of 25-35%?
Rolex aside (because they're not the best example of a premium watch), most of these things cost a lot of money not because of precious metals/gemstone content but because of either brand cache, extensive craftsmanship, or both.
GameGuru No it isn’t that powerful a source of x-rays, but it is still not recommended. Also it is calibrated for elements which have intrinsic value. There isn’t much of a trade in scrap water or carbon, however being able to point it at a random bit of gold coloured metal and get an idea it is 18 karat gold (75%) or base metal (eg brass).
Yes. All light including and higher in energy than UVC has enough energy to knock off electrons from atoms, which gives it the name "ionizing radiation", and that will lead to cancer as it corrupts DNA. However, it's not as powerful as to penetrate materials very deeply, as it measures backscatter. It also seems very low in energy.
No clue how many xrays his xray does. But regardless it shouldn't be more than a normal hooman xray. It takes alot of energy to produce Radiation if wete talking about electronics.
NB. Energy, in terms of X-rays is represented by the scale showing keV. That determines/indicates how energetic the "beam" is. The Exposure -dose one would get ( in Sievert(s) or Gray(s)) depends on the Energy of the radiation, the power output (accelerator potential converted into X-ray flux) and exposure time (Sieverts take type of radiation into account).. It gets complicated, correlation with harm to biological tissue is not straightforward, risk is easier to determine than actual harm. Penetration is only correlated to the keV value of the x-ray, it has nothing to do with flux (afaik).
Diamonds are probably worth very little, no one wants to buy them because the price is artificially inflated by the diamond industry. They aren't too terribly rare.
You are correct Rhett having a Vietnam flashback. De Beers has a complete monopoly on the whole diamond industry. They're not even slightly rare. People want diamonds for veeeery slimy business tactics.
Diamonds are not actually as valuable as jewellers would have you believe. They wouldn't sell for a whole lot unless you could find a buyer as naive as a middle aged woman
One of my neighbors is a partner in a large jewelry store. He routinely travels to Europe and New York to buy diamonds. He said that the wholesale value of the diamonds used by Rolex when purchased in bulk are about $3 each.
Also, just some rough estimates. 1 carat diamond price really depends on on the 3C's. but since they are used in a Rolex lets assume they are mid-high quality, about $6000 per carat. those look like 1pt diamonds (100pt = 1 carat) and there are about 45 of them. So, ((6000*.01)=(60)*45)=2700. so about $2700.

So, basically, it's artificial price inflation
@Rasmus Berg Exactly! I typically like his videos, but I was getting annoyed when he kept suggesting it was gold filled and not 18K...
Next up: im gonna try to extract radium from this watch face
Chungus is a ded meme
It’s pretty easy, better if you do it from uranium ore, spoiler: he already has the supplies to do so and the first step done.
*Cody extracts radium from watch face*
*All government agencies:* Hey Cody, whatcha doin?
Technically it's tritium and those inserts were found in Luminox watches
Send me the diamonds, I can tell you their worth.

So happy to see these videos again
Well that was cool, interesting results.
Thanks Cody

It's also incredibly played out.
Why the hell do people continually ask about that series when he's addressed it multiple times?
What about using your pill press and smashing the silver back into a solid piece like you did with the gold?
Unlike gold, I don't think this'll work with silver.
Have him send it to hpc to see if tbey can do it in the press lol
You're an amazing human. You show people how cool it is to be smart. Thank you Cody.
The copper wire method you used to extract the silver reminds me of my hs chem class. My chem teacher had a dehydrator to dry off the silver and almost burned the school down because she left it on over the weekend. Always a pleasure to watch another video Cody!
Do you have a video about this Xray device 2:40
doesn't these handheld materiel-Xray-analyzers cost like an arm and a leg?
fascinating device.-
Are u getting rid of the X-ray gun? Why u say "while I still have it"?

@@mihaimera7837 Funny cause I got it while english is clearly non my native language ;) First time I hear that clock != watch. I guess they are pretty similar, no?
@@ZElTGElST In American English (no clue about British English) - Clocks are the time telling devices you hang up on the walls or leave on your nightstand, Watch(es) are the time telling devices you wear commonly on your wrist or body. Hope that clarifies :).
@@mihaimera7837 a watch is a clock, but not every clock is a watch ;)
@@QuackZack >wrist or body
i've never seen anybody wear a watch anywhere other than their wrist
also to expand a little, watch faces are typically small (somewhere between 1 and 2 inches in diameter) while clocks are bigger than that, 6+ inches in diameter and 2x4x8 inches for a digital clock without any fancy designs
edit: spacing
Rolex never uses plating on their watches but they do use lots of stainless
Cody,
Every time I think you couldn't come up with a cooler idea than your last video, you surprise me. I'm into metallurgy and I just love your videos! You deserve every view. You work very hard studying, doing Science, thinking about video ideas and editing videos, that nobody sees. Thank you for making these videos!

Great video Cody - really clean and well edited. You da man
I don’t know if you still get notifications if someone comments on a older video.
But I’ve watched most of all your work. My uncle taught the jewelry business. But yet he died before telling how to get the chemicals.
How do you get the chemicals that you you use? Does it take a special permit or degrees, etc??
I would greatly appreciate it if you could take a moment to let me know. If you get this message. Thanks again for all your work in the videos!! You’re awesome!! I had little chem set as a child and wanted to be a chem professor. But life changes, especially when parents no longer care for one another so does your priorities change. But that’s old news. If you don’t mind answering these questions, I really do appreciate your time to answer them! Again thanks for the videos!! Keep them coming and keep up the great work you do for the wannabes out here, lol! If I wasn’t struggling to take care of my family, I would most definitely donate to your channel because it’s one of the few that are legitimate!! Thanks Charles

Rolex factory diamonds are above VVS1, it usually flawless or internally flawless (IF)
@@karasus7512 Thank you for the correction. I'm a Horologist rather than a Gemologist.
I made another mistake. Points are a decimal of karat. But measurable in mm also *if converted*. 4mm = .25 points/ 1/4 Karat. But 8mm = 2 Karat.
Nobody:
Cody: how to make your $7,000 watch loose 93% of its value!
nobody:
rolex: how to make 900% profit out of your gold (NOT A SCAM)
@Adam Defibaugh Theres a lot of factors that determine the value of a watch. Theres certainly not $7000 worth material there but that's not all your paying for.
Robin Lundqvist if you think about it $500 for the gold and $2k for the diamonds and you have to pay someone to make the watch by hand so really i can see the justification for the price. Also you can get this Rolex fro probably around $4k if u wanted.
Obviously money isn't his main priority. I respect that.

Thank you for doing another gold extraction video. I like your older vids.
Does anyone have an educated guess about the value of those diamonds? I'm guessing there's 48 of them.
Hardly anything. Diamonds are only valuable due to artificial scarcity, so they don't sell for much on the secondary market.
Arbbym9er
Diamonds are worthless.
Rolex is a very premium watch manufacturer
So if you placed that x-ray gun on someone and activated it, could you give them cancer? Also, would it just register a bunch of carbon and water?
@Grenherb And your source for that preposterous claim ("cancer rates are at a[n] all time[s] high")? Is that why life expectancy keeps growing?

But, yes... I find them creepy in a "cult" sort of way.
Don't know exactly why, but I do.
Wow! From $7,000 to $500 who would've thought. I really wish you found out the estimate of the diamonds.
they're cheap old real small diamonds. probably under a grand
Dude you just destroyed the watch industry. I love you.
