Realistic SCT-34 cassette deck fixes itself

This cassette deck arrived at my door not working with a hum in the left channel. While on camera it fixed itself somehow...my theory is that the record-play switch inside the machine was dirty but I'm not 100% on that. Either way, I am happy that this is working again as it completes my 80s Realistic mini components.

I have exactly the same deck, my uncle gave it to me in 1990 and it worked fine for many years but then it started to have this same problem but instead of making a "hum" it makes a loud noise like a "hishhh" every time I press any key, the solution was the same as you do here, press the play-record keys and stop it several times, that works for a while but then it happens again. I haven't used it for about 15-20 years but I know it still works.
I've used it a couple of times to record gigs of my band back in the day, it's a nice deck.

I used to yoke with my customers about modems - "Now when we are thinking of changing it to another it starts to work'. I have seen strange things after recapping computer. If it's audio filter the solder around the caps can starts to move and after 15 minuts it can sound bad in one channel. In theory every time you use an elektronic device the solder iron moves and when it cools down it getting stiff again. It can of course be something else like dust.

Sometimes there may be dust on the record switch. Get you some contact cleaner and clean the record play switch, all the pots and switches and jacks and then see if that solves the problem.

Hi there, may I ask what speakers are you using with the tape deck? I acquired one of these Realistic SCT-34 tape decks and would like to test it out. If you wouldn't mind recommending the type... thank you so much. Glad yours is working too!

You'll need to attach it to an amplifier first. Any amplifier and speakers will work, but it will not drive speakers all by itself.

Hey there, my friend. Found your channel by happenstance, while looking to find out any info. on this very cassette player. One in which I have the opportunity to purchase a working model of for $40.00CAN even. So after having presumably used yours for a few years since uploading this video, would you say that those afore mentioned 40 clams would be worth me spending on it? Any input would be appreciated. thats cool too bad radio shack and the realistic brand is no more i had two of those 34 s connected to my realistic mixer so i can mix songs back to back i had the sct-86 very dependable little deck rec level controls led meters dolby metal tape not bad .
