- Behind the Scenes at EarthRoamer: A Fascinating Factory Tour of Luxury Camper Production
EarthRoamer has been around for 25 years.It was actually founded by a gentleman by the name of Bill Swales, who unfortunately passed away a little over a year ago. He was a wildlife photographer with his passion and after he threw away a couple of truck campers because he was too cold and too wet while filming in Alaska, decided to set about and create the perfect expedition vehicle that would allow him to get out in the wild, do what he did best, and still be comfortable at the same time. First vehicle rolled out of the factory in 1999.
Since that time, we have over 350 vehicles on the road. Only two have ever been taken out of service. Currently we're producing about 40 vehicles a year, and I was fortunate to join the company about two years ago when Bill hired me based on my manufacturing experience to be the president and CEO. So you have a unique background that that I would think will be is super well suited to EarthRoamer. So tell us a little bit about your own personal background...

1,000,000! It’s a fantastic vehicle but I could put something tougher for 1/4 of that price and it would pretty much do everything that vehicle does.

A little over 30 years ago I was fortunate enough to layout an entire assembly line for cement trucks plant, with supporting manufacturing. Brings back good memories. Nice job on the video!

I was thinking the same thing that the gentleman in the wood shop said. This is definitely more on the level of a yacht more so than a vehicle. Very impressive!!
We spent a full day in their factory and were blown away buy the custom built quality of every aspect. Our greatest challenge was trying to convey that to our viewers in only 1 hour!

I hauled RVs from Indiana to Canada. Started looking at Earthroamer in 2018. The whole company has evolved into something bigger and better than ever with the SX and Chevy 5500 crewcab chassis. This is the game changer for me. As mentioned I'm in Canada.

Agreed. Incinerating toilet as well. One turn off with previous models was having to shower with my toilet. The SX changed that. Second turn off is the cassette toilet. Just making suggestions to the fine people at Earthroamer. As mentioned in another comment, I've been looking at the company since 2018.

I understand that. We tried to help with this in-depth tour. Next you should try to go see one in person. Yes they are expensive. But the quality and craftsmanship are second to none

Years ago I’d be drooling over this vehicle! But, as nice as it is, I now prefer renting Airbnb’s… lazy? No! I drive my wife’s 2020 4Runner from LA to our destination in Mexico ( 6 hours a day for 4 days ) every summer loaded with surfboards and fishing rods on top and all the clothes, dog food, and accessories needed for 6 weeks! We rent a 2bdrm, 1 bath with property for $75 a day. That said, those are some bad ass vehicles! Maybe pick one up when my daughter is out of school and go touring from Alaska, through Mexico, Canada and all points in between 👍

This is my dream to have one of these this video of seeing the insides of Earthromer is just incredible and even more sold that these vehicles are worth the money. I was interested in the HD but it seems they discontinued it I wish he asked that question I would love to get the SX. My goal make millions of dollars lol

Wanderbox is my second choice, they're out of Mead Colorado. Main plan for me right now, summer on my farm in Alberta. Winter in Wyoming, Utah, Colorado and Arizona.

My best answer is yes you can customize, it is well balanced but any vehicle can tip over when improperly driven, they will spend the better part of a day letting you get used to the vehicle at their factory so you are comfortable driving it, but you would want to contact the company for details. I see that you guys use the Chevy 6500 for the SX model and the F550 for the LTI. was there any thought of has anyone come up to you guys and ask if the Chevy 6500 be an option for the LTI models even though the Ford 550 is the standard model for the LTI? I know you gentlemen also customize the inside. What about the outside as in bigger tires proportionate to the vehicle?

The most interesting part of the EarthRoamer build was left out. The carbon fiber shell. Why? I was really looking forward to actually seeing the build process for that since no other manufacturer; that I know of, builds carbon fiber shells.

The CEO talked about it but they didn't show us because its their "secret sauce" The Entire Camper Shell is made from Carbon Fiber and has been tested structurally for withstand a 4.5 G impact

In 1993 we bought a new Lance 990 slide in camper and put it on our 1978 F-250. Later we bought a 1997 F-350 dually. That camper has taken us through hell and high water for 30 years now and it only cost us $14k. I know there are a lot of overpriced junk RV's out there these days but 30 years ago Lance made one hell of a good unit. Earth Roamer may be cool but the vast majority of us just do not have a million bucks to drop on a camper.

I’m looking to get one of these and part of my information gathering process was following a bunch of people on Instagram who have EarthRoamers. I must say I’m a little bit put off by how much mechanical problems these people have with breakdowns and having to get their trucks shipped back to the US from other countries. It scares me a little bit. I’m sure earth Romer does everything right and maybe the blame lies with the use of a Ford truck as a backbone.

So the founder, a wildlife photographer, created a product that virtually no wildlife photographer / average outdoorsman could feasibly afford?
He created a product for himself and then offered it to other that aspired to go off the grid.
Check out Tim’s economical home on wheels @Truck House Life. He Also did Moab last year, and a 11000 mile trip from home in Alaska, to Georgia and back.
Expensively?, of course it’s not cheap but then great quality is always going to be pricey and if I had the money I’d have either a n f650 or an f750 in right hand drive but either way they are quality pieces of kit. 🙏

@@TwoGuysandaRide Lame. imagine having enough battery power and solar panels that you could just charge it while it sits or while you drive and run it forever without having to charge it and then have a normal motor as a backup or to run simultaneously or on command with a switch. I know that sounds kinda crazy but if you had enough money that would be amazing.

I had thought about ordering one....up until the point I heard they discontinued the HD. I don't like the look of the SX and I don't like GM Trucks. The SX also doesn't have the water capacity of the HD.
