Who said they weren't popular? 4 top 15 albums in the US, 7 top 7 UK albums. Sweet Dreams was #1 in the US, a total of 15 charting hits. And then Annie had her own solo career with 6 charting US albums, 3 in the top 10.

This whole video is a giant "Fuck You" to the music industry of the time. The video takes place in a boardroom and Annie and her partner are dressed as CEOs to represent to small minded music label CEOs who kept ruining their dreams by demanding they stick to what was "popular" and "selling". Annie herself being dressed in short hair and a tailored business suit is a direct attack on the typical image of an 80s female music artist which was big hair and a colorful flowing dress. The cows represent the artists who "conformed". The ones who just meekly let themselves be herded around by their music labels and only made the music they were told to make.

Only their first album flopped, all their others were huge, worldwide, accompanied by hit single after hit single. They're one of the biggest acts of the 80s. After they split, Annie Lennox had a massively successful solo career, that's still ongoing. :)

Annie Lennox has a very powerful voice. The Eurythmics had a lot of great hits in the 80's-90's such as "Who's That Girl?", "Right By Your Side", "Here Comes The Rain Again", "Would I Lie To You?", "It's Alright (Baby's Coming Back)", "Love Is A Stranger", "Missionary Man" etc. Annie has had a great solo career too with many hits.

This is when the 80s began for me. I still remember the first time I saw the video on MTV after school back in '83. I was just blown away by both the sound and the visuals. Annie had so much swagger you just couldn't deny her.

Rolling Stone called the song "a synth-pop masterpiece that made Lennox and Dave Stewart MTV superstars".
And this song became a huge success, both for The Eurythmics as well as for MTV, which was struggling at that point.

Annie Lennox has a fantastic singing voice (and stage presence) and Dave Stewart is amazingly creative as a composer and arranger, plus his production skills. My favorite track by them is Would I Lie to You - powerful driving rock with support from Fishbone.

    • @rebeccalipps8007
      @rebeccalipps8007 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

"Lie to You" is my favorite from them, too. Annie's voice here is like a breathy whisper in the ear. Her look here was also copied with fashion trends having 'masculine' cuts. My family finally subscribed to Mtv about the time this was released & they soon put it on hourly repeat.

One early 80s Eurythmics hit that has had almost zero youtube reactions is “who’s that girl” which seems crazy, such a great tune. It was the early days of MTV where video budgets were low, directors were trying original ideas and feeling out the creative process. But the tune is great.
Just remember that music videos (for the most part) didnt even exist until about 1981/2, MTV kicked off about 1983 (and most people outside america didnt have access to it until late 80s), so around 1982-1985 videos had:
    Low budgets
    Directors trying different things
Trying to figure out artistic styles and what worked and didnt work.
So yes, the cow was strange 😂

  • @HillbillyBard

@Salvo "Here Comes the Rain Again" and other Eurythmics songs are absolute fire. Annie's songs solo are just as worthy. "Walking on Broken Glass", "Little Bird" and "Why" among them.

It is wonderful they were a couple, broke up early in the career and can still have so much love & respect for each other, a true friendship after all these years.

SalvoG, I clicked on this link SO fast! Probably one of my top synth-pop tracks - from just that opening drop of synth goodness, to that infectious groove and chorus, to Annie Lennox's fantastic voice (and beauty - I've always thought she was quite attractive!) This song was a banger on the dance floor!!
Eurythmics were one of many to own the 80's, and if the New Wave/Synth-pop genre is your thing, then there is LOTS to discover my good friend!
Other Eurythmic tracks: Who's That Girl, Here Comes The Rain Again, Beethoven (I Love To Listen To), Miracle Of Love (beautiful ballad!), Thorn In My Side, When Tomorrow Comes, Missionary Man...so many hits!
Further synth-pop discoveries: New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle and Blue Monday; Trans-X - Living On Video; A-Ha - Take On Me, The Sun Always Shines On TV, Hunting High & Low, Manhattan Skyline (and many others); Flock Of Seagulls - I Ran, Space Age Love Song.
Can't leave out Pet Shop Boys - It's A Sin, Opportunities (Let's Make Lots Of Money), West End Girls, One More Chance, Two Divided By Zero, Always On My Mind...
And then there's the 'masters' of the New Wave era - Depeche Mode...that's a HUGE rabbit hole!! (and a worthwhile one!)

Not making fun of your comment AT ALL, but saying "Annie Lennox has a really nice voice" is like saying "That Michelangelo could sure paint and sculpt!" Her voice could calm a prison riot, coax stars out of the sky, etc. This is a "definitive" 80's song. A few other "musts" from Eurythmics: "Love is a stranger," "Would I lie to you," "Beethoven (I love to listen to)" Her partner, Dave Stewart, is so brilliant. Another great female-fronted "80's Sound" (your beloved "Synth pop!") is Berlin. Check out "Dancing in Berlin."

  • @YouKnowWhereYouWentWrong

The album this is on is insanely good. Especially when you know it was recorded on an 8 track Tascam recorder. These days 64 or more tracks are used. There is a particular beauty in the simplicity of these older synth-pop songs. They always say "less is more" - this drives that home. The empty spots in between the sounds are so much more effective.

My favorites from The Eurythmics are (in no order) :
    Missionary Man
    Who's That Girl
    Would I Lie to You
    Sisters are Doing It for
    Themselves (with Aretha
    Franklin)
    Thorn in My Side
    There Must Be an Angel
    Love is a Stranger
    Here Comes the Rain Again
When the pair disbanded Annie kept going on her own and she did as well (or even better than) The Eurythmics. She's had a long and brilliant career...and she's still going at 67 years old.

If you like early 80s synth pop, you should check out Yazoo. Imho they're the greatest band of that genre, although shortlived, only releasing 2 albums. It's another duo. Vince Clarke is THE king of synth pop. He was one of the founding members of Depeche Mode and was their main creative force, before leaving to found Yazoo. Yazoo had great success but didn't last. He then went on to form the incredibly popular band 'Erasure'. Alison Moyet, the singer, had a once in a generation voice. Ridiculously good! She went on to have a highly successful solo career too. Her solo work is definitely worth checking out but definitely start with Yazoo first. :)

I have never understood why the Eurythmics debut album "In The Garden" was considered a flop, It's my secod favourite of their albums and the second one I listen to the most,"Belinda" and "Never Gonna Cry Again" were the two singles released from it and both are actually great tracks. I still really rate this album and sadly it is still really underrated. As a debut album it's actually a great one and already showcased how original Annie Lennox and Dave stewart were as an act,it has an edgy rawness to it and has a lot of ambient sounds woven through it. It never really gets reviewed on youtube,it's almost become a forgotten Eurythmics album, but deserves to be appricicated for the great album it actually is. Would be great to see what you think of this album and the two singles from it. (matt)

Something you might not know - this song was really their first ‘hit’ and I don’t think they were promoted well with this album. It got lots of play time on alternative radio but not on mainstream at first, which could have affected their ranking.
But to save money while recording this album, Dave and Annie did all the parts themselves (if I recall correctly) so each voice you hear on this song is another layer of Annie. They did get backup singers for concerts, but they did start a little small.

I see that this is a year old but, the cow is because EVERY SINGLE DAMN 80s video had either a white or black stallion in them. So to rebel Annie and Dave put a cow in their video.

This song was notoriously covered by Marilyn Manson - a completely different take on the song!

Um yeah … it’s never just about the voice, but the writing, instrumentation, production etc.
And a little less translucency - it was actually unwatchable.
    Great classic track.
For another global explosion check CHARLES & EDDIE’s “Would I Lie to You?” and “Shine”

Marilyn Manson does a cover of this song. You might wanna check it out. It's kinda dark tho, if you're not familiar with him.

I've never been a big fan of Annie Lennox but I loved this song. I wasn't old enough to party in that decade but I'd assume it was a club track 😄
